My first bout with hunger really surprised me. I had just finished a shake, so WTH? It eventually ironed itself out. I think it is just my body adjusting to the new plumbing in there. Good luck!

I am three and a half weeks out. I had my first real battle with head hunger last night. All the kids went to sleep overs and my husband was out fishing with his dad. I kept thinking, "I'm gonna eat whatever the heck I feel like." I had to do a reality check each time. This was an old thinking habit. I wasn't hungry at all, I just wanted to splurge. That is where all my diets failed before RNY. I would get tired of trying hard, or working hard. So I'm trying to figure out what to do to change that thought pattern. Any ideas?

I'm at that stage too. Having the surgery still amazes me. It's like coming suddenly awake after jumping off a cliff. And then I feel okay about jumping. Lots of chaos in the brain right now.

It is totally not surprising to feel that way. Eating was my everything. My emotional coping tool that I have had my entire life is not there right now, and it is hard. Have you talked about it with your doc? If not, you might want to let him or her know, since it could be an indicator that your vitamins are off. I have been giving myself little tasks to do when I start feeling out of sorts. I never really developed healthy boredom skills, I always just went to the pantry. What I am doing right now, is to try to get my mind off it. I made a list of things to do that take about a half hour, wrote them on small slips of paper, and put them in a jar. When I start that restless feeling, I go pick a slip and do it. Examples are: take pictures in the yard or house like I am laying out a story in a magazine; de-clutter two drawers in a room; purge kids' clothes and prep them for donation; organize a page in one of my scrapbooks, etc. It's not much work, and it helps break that mood. I try not to do huge tasks that can't get done within about 30 minutes, because that left me feeling defeated. We are people who have made this huge, life-changing alteration to how we usually do stuff. It is going to get uncomfortable, there's no shame in that. If you feel it is overwhelming you, though, you might want to seek some counseling or go to a post-op support group. I hope that helps....(((((hug)))))

Me too! I found that out pretty early. My latest upset was when I added lactose-free, fat-free milk to my shake. I didn't let the bubbles dissipate for long enough. Milk makes stronger bubbles. I nearly went to the ER. Not fun.

I wondered that too. I am 3 weeks out and had hunger, so added some of the things my nutritionists had okayed within the next week. I would try two spoonfuls and see how it sat in my pouch. Cream of potato soup puréed with chicken stock did the trick for me.

I just had my first major outing with the kids to a playoff game. I packed the cooler with healthy snacks for the kids along with water and protein packs for me. I kept forgetting to sip water, and put off my shake. Not a good idea. I got pretty lightheaded and dizzy. When I did have my shake, I drank it too fast and got sick. It took about an hour to get myself straightened out. But I still made it through alive! Note; concession food was not tempting at all. Yay!

I had my surgery May 8, 2013, and I am starting to feel a lot more human again. I started cream Soups and farina this week. The soups are awesome, the farina - not so much. It made my stomach hurt after a couple of spoons full. So I will wait on that. I hope my stomach swelling goes away soon! I've lost close to 20 lbs, but still have a hard time wearing anything sung around my waist.

I hear you. I felt pretty pathetic, too. It is going to get better real soon! I am about 16 days out and can't believe I was so weak such a short time ago. My stomach is still very sore, and I haven't quite gotten the rhythm of eating, snacking, sipping, etc. but I feel pretty normal otherwise. You've just had major surgery! Hang in there, and be kind to yourself.

Soon as I got home I was getting stuff picked up around he house, and that helped it work its way out. It was real, no-kidding-around pain up until then! I hope you start/continue feeling better soon!

I had my surgery a week ago, and I am trying to get the hang of the post op diet. I figured out early what dumping syndrome felt like, because I tried to hit my goal of 60 oz liquid and 60 grams of protein too fast. I also didn't dilute my fruit juice. BIG mistake! Really weak and confused and sweating excessively. So I ramped everything way down, and it made me feel better, but this evening I'm feeling weak and disoriented again. Did anyone else go through something similar? What helped?

You made me giggle, because I had that same issue. Better out than in, especially right after surgery! Don't push too fast.

I had my surgery May 8 and haven't had any hunger issues. Tonight starts my 3rd week, and I added almond milk for the first time, and some cream of chicken (thinned with water). All is well, but I'm having what used to think of as hunger pains. I know my pouch isn't empty, and it kind of feels like a really big gas bubble? Any one else have this?

I called my doc, and we figured out I was having dumping symptoms. I was drinking too many fluids too soon after surgery. I dropped back everything and started the next day with smaller amounts, and added broth to replace some of my sipping water. I felt better and increased a lot slower after that. Whew! That was not fun. -
Arthritis ... What do you take?

It is, but it helps with arthritis in some cases, too. -
I can finally say I had the surgery! I had the bypass Wednesday, May 8, and it is now Saturday, May 11. I still have cramps and pain, but considering it was major surgery, I am doing great! I've been up walking around the house occasionally folding laundry, making sure I drink lots of sips of Water. My first night home from the hospital my family made pizza and celebrated my husband's birthday with an ice cream cake. It wasn't really difficult to resist since my stomach is still so sore, but it smelled really good. I am going to need a better defense down the road when my stomach doesn't hurt any more. Kate

Good luck and blessings to you! I had mine on the 8th, and I'm finally getting into the groove of it.

Arthritis ... What do you take?

My doc cleared me for nuerontin, which takes some of the pain from the nerves. I've been using with Tylenol and it has been manageable. But I haven't had a really bad flair up since the surgery, so we will see. I hope you find some relief. -
My husband and I met when we were young and fit and in the military. It is 13 years later with 3 kids and retirements. We packed on the weight together. He is at least 100lbs overweight, as am I. I had my gastric bypass surgery May 8 and I am recovering well. Except hubby keeps bringing up that I will leave him if he doesn't keep up with me in weightless, I want to reassure him, but at the same time I want him to make some changes. Anyone else go through this?
