7. My journey has been life-long. I was overweight as a young child, medically obese by around age 7. Should you choose to read on, you will get a glimpse of the factors that contributed to my struggle in comforting myself with food and attempting to render myself unattractive. I had been through the tumultuous divorce of my parents and felt abandoned by my father at age 6. Within a year of my parents' divorce, I was molested by an adult male friend of the family. A few years later, I was molested by an older boy, another family friend. As a teen, searching for love and male attention to fill the hole in my heart, I began a sexual relationship with my boyfriend at 15. I became pregnant within a year and decided to abort my child. I believed the lies of the abortion industry, that it was a painless procedure, that my baby was just a "clump of cells," and went through with the abortion. Immediately afterwards, I knew I could never go through with, or put myself in that position EVER AGAIN! This is when I really saw my weight balloon, in what I now see was an effort to make myself undesirable by men. If no one was attracted to me, I wouldn't have sex, so I couldn't get pregnant, and would never again face abortion. This is when I graduated to morbid obesity. I had gained around 80 pounds within a year. My family excused the weight gain by comparing me to other family members who were large. It seemed natural to them, that because I was becoming a woman and there was a family history of obesity, the weight gain was unavoidable. No one relized that I was filling an emotional hole with food. No one saw the isolating behaviors I was exhibiting. Thirteen years later, at age 29, after having had four children, married and divorced, I had come to know God and started a process of recovery from all of my past hurts. Since then, layer upon layer of pain has been peeled away, and I am truly a new person! I won't say that the weight is the last thing I need to peel away, but I can say that I am ready to work on this part of me now! I had thought about gastric bypass many times over the years, since 1999, but never with the healing behind me and the mindset I have now. For me, shedding this weight is symbolic of breaking free from the shackles of all the pain that was holding me back. Thank you for taking the time to read my story!

Struggling...is it too late?

It is not too late! You might not be able to exercise like you used to, but you can do something and you can change your eating habits TODAY!!! This is the good news. The bad news is that it sounds like you are struggling with mind over matter and possibly some depression. Many people with physical pain suffer depression and need therapy and sometimes medication to get through it. You may want to consider getting help with this. We were not created to handle our issues alone! I was so glad to read that it was 18lbs and not hundreds. You can do this!!!
11. Thanks to those who commented on my update! I am beginning to feel really great! I spent the day shopping at an outlet mall with a friend yesterday and added a few items to my wardrobe. It was actually fun! I used to loathe shopping for clothes. Now, I can shop in almost any store and that feels amazing!

13. I developed a pinched nerve due to compressions in my neck and had similar issues along with burning sensation and shooting pain in my shoulder. It didn't start out that bad, but worsened over several weeks. When it started keeping me up at night and heat/massage weren't doing the trick, I headed to the chiropractor. That's where I found out about the nerves/spinal compression. I kept wondering if it was weight loss related somehow. I still don't have that answer, but my treatments are doing wonders! If you have coverage or can afford it, a chiropractor might help
14. My surgery is just 11 days away. Today, I received paperwork from my surgeon's office that indicated there may be hospital fees that I am expected to pay when I check in. I am already facing hardship from paying my surgeon's $950 fee. I have no clue how I will come up with any v additional admit, or what that amount would be. I have Anthem Blue Cross. Anybody have any insight for me?

Worried About Paying for surgery, HELP!

God blessed me so much! Realizing I've never received a hospital bill, I just went through all of the claims and my insurance paid every dime. I had two surgeries and three hospitalizations due to complications. My bills totaled over $171,000 and I don't owe one red cent! Simply amazed.

I just figured out the changes that happened in the old rnytalk, so here I am! I'm 15 weeks out from surgery today and feeling great! My weight loss has definitely slowed, but I bought a treadmill and weight system last weekend which is helping me kick it up a notch. It is so awesome to be able to work out without feeling like I'm going to die any minute.! I'm attaching a progress pic. Middle is pre-surgery, 298lbs. Left is 1 1/2 wks post-op, 280lbs. Right is a week ago, just over 230lbs. Join me, August peeps, and show us your progress!!!

I had to have mine stretched twice. It's really a piece of cake compared to the surgery. You'll feel SO much better once it's properly opened again!

July Post-ops

I was also thinking that I don't see any July post-ops on the forum. I had surgery at the end of July, on the 31st, so I've been checking out the August post-op board as well. I had complications following surgery that kept me in and out of the hospital over the course of 5 weeks. I still have trouble getting enough water, protein, etc. but I am doing so much better than before. I am down 51lbs since surgery almost 8 weeks ago. I lost most of that between weeks 2-6 and have only lost a few pounds in the last couple of weeks. Some are suggesting that I need to eat more, which I find likely since I'm hardly eating. What are everyone's favorite foods now?

What ya eating tonight?

I know it had bean sprouts, not sure if this one had anything else. I have a recipe that says to add any shredded veggies you like or have on hand. I imagine that zucchini, carrot, sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, etc would all be good fillings, depending on your preferences. I would sautee the veggies first, so they're not too crunchy because the egg should cook pretty fast.

Do you still have your gallbladder? If so, it could be an attack. Check with your doctor about the pain, just to be on the safe side!

What Exercise Did You Do Today?

NONE! Help me. I need some motivation. My Dr. Wants me walking 40 mins. a day and on my best days, I have gotten close, but it's not routine yet. I can't fathom walking that much right now when I get light headed just walking upstairs at home or trying to load the dishwasher. I am 7 weeks out from surgery, but have had some complications that kept me in and out of the hospital for over 5 weeks. I feel like I'm just getting started. How did you all get started in the beginning?

What ya eating tonight?

Egg Foo Young!!! It was soo good. I had the gravy on the side and just dabbed a tiny bit here and there. I always loved this dish, but never realized that it was basically an Asian omelette. I thought it must have some kind of batter, but it turns out it's just eggs and veggies with a splash of soy and some ginger for that authentic flavor. Yum!
