My story starts years ago. In 2006, years of being obese I finally ready to make a change. I had met someone who had recently had a lap band and she was doing great. So I too, decided on a lap band because I didn't want to have a gastric bypass and have my insides rerouted. I was excited and ready to start using the tool and lose weight. Then on Friday, March 24, 2006 I had the lap band. Everything went well, or so we thought. The next day, I was supposed to go home but had a fever and they just medicated me. But I was having a lot of pain, and thought I shouldn't be in so much pain. So the doctor kept me an extra day. Then on Sunday, the doctor came and I asked about my pain, and asked shouldn't we do some kind of test to check my band? He said it was fine and sent me home. I could not keep anything down, I was having diarrhea. I felt so weak. Then around 4 am Tuesday morning, I could not take it anymore and told my husband something is wrong. He called the doctor and I went in and they said I was dehydrated. No joking! So they were going to give me IV fluids in the office and thank God they couldn't find a vein. Oh, but they tried. They told me to go to the ER and be admitted. So over to the hospital I went. They couldn't find a vein either and I was in so much pain and so weak. They finally did a central line and then did a swallow test and found I had a perforation! I had to have emergency surgery on March 28, 2006 to remove the band and repair the perforation. I continued to have pain and infection and was in the hospital 2 more times throughout April and was sent home with a home health nurse for a month, she came 3 times a week. It took me about 5 months to get all of my strength back. Now here I am 7 years later seeing a new surgeon to see if I am eligible for weight loss surgery. I am, but I can get the gastric bypass because I had already had the lap bad. I was so disappointed that I couldn't get the sleeve. Also, I will be having the surgery open instead of laproscopically because of all the scar tissue from the previous surgeries. I have a good doctor this time. No, great doctor! I am excited, nervous and scared, all at the same time. My surgery date is January 15, 2013.
