    Immediate post surgery must haves?

I'm 9 weeks post. Some of the protein drinks that sat well with me where, Isopure grape flavored, comes bought it at GNC, Premeir protein shakes chocolate, Unjury chicken soup flavored, chike coffee flavored, you can get on Amazon. It mix with water, I used Sobee water. It was tasted too sweet to drink alone. I love Crystal light but the lemonade flavors were too acidic. The fruit punch flavor was good. It's hard because things taste a little different after surgery.

I use a bariatric chewable called Celebrate. 2 a day and 3 Celebrate Calcium. I don't need extra iron because I'm post menopausal. I have my blood checked in December to see if all my levels are OK.
  3. When I saw the dietician 3 weeks post op, I asked about calories too. She said about 800-1000. I'm 9 weeks out and am just making it to a little over 700. I eat 6 small meals no more then 4 oz per meal. This is what my surgeon recommends. Also 60-80 gm of protein per day. I still do 1 protein shake per day. I'm rarely hungry and my energy is good.

    eatting

My clinic has us eat 6 times a day. No more than 4 oz ( 1/2 cup) per meal. I weigh my food. I progressed from fluids like protein shakes for 2 weeks, then purée food for 2 weeks, then soft food for 2 weeks. I'm eight weeks post now. I try to add new food slowly. Everyone progresses at their own rate though. I still supplement with protein shakes to get all my protein in.

    Giving up

Malabsorption never wears off. That's why you have to take vitamins for your whole life. It's normal to lose the most weight in the first year. It's harder after that but a lot of people continue to lose if they haven't met their goal. Go back to the basics. Review the guidelines you used earlier on. Eat 6 small meals a day. Never eat more than 4 oz at a time.

    Smoking and Gastric Bypass

You should google "effects of smoking with anesthesia". One thing for sure is to be truthful with your anesthesiologist so/ he/ she can be prepared.. Best of luck.

I believe you have a stricture, this can happen, but my understanding it's not a big deal to correct and you will feel so much better. I do hear that it sometimes has to be repeated to correct the problem for ever.

How much time did you take off from work?

My doctor but me out for 6 weeks and I took it all. Physically, I was healed at 2 weeks but, progressing through the different eating phases, getting all the required fluids and getting into an exercise routine takes some time. I wanted to be prepared as possible when I went back to work.

    Short term disability

It was covered by my policy, plus I have state disability(California ). I was approved for 6 weeks, which is the time frame my doctor put down on the forms.

    Pre-natal vitamins

The opening from the pouch to the intestines is very small. Larger pills will cause problems. That's why Bariatric vitamins are chewable or liquid.

What do you do in hospital post-op?

Surgery on Monday, discharge on Wednesday. IV dilaudid for the first 24 hrs, then to lortab elixir. Walked the evening of my surgery. The 2nd day I sat up in the chair on and off most of day. Took walks around the floor several times a day. It helps to move the gas through and gets the anesthesia out of your system. Most important thing is to keep moving. Don't lie in bed all day. It will slow your recovery. I took the Lortab elixir for about a week. Best of luck.

I'm almost 2 weeks on full liquids. I can have things like Yogurt( non fat Fage with sugar free strawberry jam ...yum), and protein shakes, non fat milk with protein powder. I use Premier chocolate, Unjury chicken soup powder and a brand called Chike which is very good. I also use Isopure, grape flavored. It's comes in a pre-made bottle. You can find them at GNC. I have protein every 2 hrs no more than 4 oz at a time and water in between. Total of 6 protein supplements per day. It's the same everyday it's not forever. Next week I move onto purée. I'm so lucky, because my older sister has been staying with me since my surgery on 8/26 and she had RNY 4 years ago. She can eat most things in small amounts but she always eats protein first. I like to see this because it reminds me that life and eating will someday be back to normal. A new "normal". I don't ever want to go back to the way I ate before.

    August 2013 surgeries

I'm a little discouraged too. My surgery was 8/26/13 and I gained 10 lbs in the hospital ( fluids) I guess. I've only lost 5 lbs. I am getting about 70 g of protein in a day and drinking about 60 oz, walking 2-3 times a day. Suggestions would be appreciated.

My surgery was Aug 26. Started full liquids when I got out of the hospital on the 28th. Getting my Protein and fluids is a full time job. I'm still taking lortab elixir a few times a day but feeling fairly well. I can have yogurt, which actually felt pretty soothing to my stomach. One more week of full liquids, then to purée.
