In Newfoundland it is 100% covered under our provincial health care. As long as you don't mind the long wait period.

JUNE 2014 POST OP SUPPORT GROUP!
jules75 replied to bravobentley's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am home from the hospital. Had surgery yesterday afternoon. Doctor found a 2 inch tumour on my liver. So surgery was stopped while they waited for biopsy results. Thankfully it was negative. Just a benign tumour. The roux en y surgery went smoothly. I am having discomfort, but nothing major. I am on one ounce of clear liquids every 20 mins. And I have to force it down, I am not hungry at all. A bit nauseous, had some dry heaves, but they didn't hurt like I feared. The worst part is the ground up meds in liquid. Quite nasty. I also have a drain in, but I don't even feel it there. I have no idea how much I weigh right now. I am doing my surgery in Costa Rica. I was 260 when I got on the plane last Saturday. And was 253 on Monday during pre op. I am in my hotel until Tuesday when I get to fly home to canada. -
i am on the 10th as well! very excited.

I am two weeks pre op. Been waiting so long and it is finally getting closer. I was all prepared to begin the dreaded two week pre op liquid diet, but found out I only need to do 3 days of easily digested foods, and one day clear liquids. I am very happy about that!
-
Seems to be a lot of people very afraid of the pre op diet. I will have to start mine in a couple weeks. Most of us are afraid of failure. We didn't get to this point because we were overly successful in past diet attempts. I am going to do my best to not think about how long I have to do it, or what I am not allowed to eat. I am going to look at it like an addict. One day at a time. But more like one hour at a time. Just have to get through it, failure is not an option this time. Good luck to everyone in this stage, and see you all on the other side! we can do it, we will do it, because our life depends on it! ..... Surgery on June 10th.

Are you on May 10th or June 10th? Mine is June 10th. And it can't come soon enough!

Few days post op breast lift w/out implant
jules75 replied to Krystalrez's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I have had two breast reductions. I was a 42HHH. Managed to go down to a DD on the first one. but gained 60 lbs , so the got bigger again. Had another reduction 5 years after and am now a 38C. I am currently over 260lbs, will be having RYN next month. With both surgeries it was very lumpy, hard and deformed looking. I jokingly called them "Frankenstein-boobs". But both times they softened up into a very lovely round shape. You will start noticing it with in the first two months. Keep wearing your support garments. -
I am sure you will not have a five year wait in Ontario. Perhaps a year.... It is such a long wait in Newfoundland because they only do ONE surgery per month!! At least that is what my GP said, perhaps he was just trying to discourage me from doing it. But I am now only one month away from surgery, will do self pay in Costa Rica.

Where are all the Canadians ?
jules75 replied to canadianchick's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Not a lot of Canadians on here. I am in Newfoundland. Will be having surgery June 10th in Costa Rica. I am at 39 BMI, and there is a five year wait here. I didn't want to wait that long and In the end may not get approved. So for $8500 US, the investment in my health and future are worth it. -
I am a Newfie Canadian. Going to be doing self pay in Costa Rica on June 10th. I didn't want to wait five years to have it done here. So I get it while I am still in my thirties ( I'm 39). And I get a vacation in a beautiful tropical location!

I am scheduled for June 10th. It can't come fast enough. I am SO ready to be on the other side, the loosing side. I just have to make it through these next weeks. I am suddenly craving things I never usually eat.

GASTRIC SLEEVE OR GASTRIC BYPASS... MIXED EMOTIONS
jules75 replied to ★D's Life★'s topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
After all the research I have done, I would NOT get the sleeve. There is an Increased chance of developing esophigal cancer later on, especially in people with GERD, reflux and Haitial hernia. My doctor suggested sleeve for me, but I insisted on RYN. My surgery is scheduled for June. -
Insurance declined. Must self pay - who else has?
jules75 replied to rlm34's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
For me it is about a 10 hour travel to Costa Rica. I am on the Far East coast and have to take two flights. But there is a direct flight from Toronto to Costa Rica that is under 5 hours. I would stay for a total of 6 days. Arrive the day before surgery to do all the pre-op stuff. Surgery the next day. Two days in hospital. And then released to a surgery recovery retreat for three days. Basically it is a hotel for people who are recovering from any type of surgery. Medical Tourism they call it. Nurses on staff, and doctors do follow up with you at the hotel. I have been there in the past for other medical procedures and was very pleased with the excellent care. -

I too will be doing self pay. I am from Canada where it would actually be covered by my provincial health coverage, unfortunately it is a minimum 5 year wait. And I am borderline 39-40 bmi. So there is strong chance I would not get accepted anyway. I made the choice to do self pay. I will be doing it in Costa Rica. It cost $8,500. And I am confident in the doctor, he does more procedures in a week than most North American doctors do in six months. I have been to their hospitals and can say they are extremely clean and put our North American hospitals to shame. It is something to consider. And with the money saved you will be able to do skin removal in the future if needed. I haven't selected my date yet, but will likely be before Christmas. -

Guess this is goodbye

Hey Joy, have you considered self pay? I am in a similar situation and have opted to go to costa rica. I have been there for other surgeries in the past. The doctors are fantastic. And the price is $8500. financing is also available. I am going this august for my GBP. Just something to consider. -
The insurance issue is not relevant in my case. I am doing self pay. But I will definately be asking my surgeon about these concerns. Thanks!
-
i am getting GBP and my surgeon suggested the mini bypass over the RNY. I am unsure about doing this. He said ultimately it is my decison and will do the RNY if i want to. Was wondering if anyone else has had to make this decison. And what did u decide
-
Found a few websites saying the "MINI" should never be used. Puzzling that the doctor even suggested it. My guess os because it is an easier surgery. Done in 30 minutes. All the research point to the RNY being the best choice. I would rather take the few extra days of recovery and have less risk later on
-
Mini gastric bypass and roux-en-Y gasteic bypass. The mini gastric bypass is preformed in a shorter time. With quick recovery. It is revisable and less chance of "dumping" and mallasorbtion....however the complications inclue: leaks, and bile reflux which increases therisk of esophosal cancer.

rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia
jules75 replied to missybrown44's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
i also have rheumatoid arthritis. have had it 4+ years. i am 4 months pre-op RYN. i am in constant pain night and day. but hoping the reduced weight will help with the joint paint. carrying around an extra 100 lbs is torture on the joints. i am fortunate to live in Canada and the surgery would be covered undrr provincial health care. but it is a 5 year wait!!! so i have made plans to.do self pay in Costa Rica this august.
