  1. Well, I am post-op day 1 gastric bypass (roux-en-y). Highest weight 299 lbs, day of surgery 278 lbs. My journey began on March 16th 2013 at Dr. Roller's seminar in northwest arkansas. Had to a 3 month nutritional counseling. My first appointment consisted of a complete history, lab work, h. pylori test, ekg, pulmonary function test, and chest x-ray. Next came the egd and pyschological evaluation. Once approved my surgery date of 8/21/13 was scheduled. 1 week pre-op I was told to do 2 meal replacement shakes and a healthy meal a day. The day before surgery was clear liquid and the amazing mag citrate bowel prep. I have never had any major surgeries before and really no major health problems other than hypothyroid and polycystic ovarian syndrome. Needless to say I was super nervous, scared of causing myself more problems. The thing that overcame that fear was my dream of having a baby and just being smaller and more active for the first time in my life. I have always been obese..starting 1st-2nd grade. Anyways, arrived at the hospital at 7:15 am to check in. 4 pokes later an iv was established. I was taken back to surgery around 9:30 am and taken to my room on the floor around 12:30. Had some issues with my oxygen dropping but nothing a few liters couldn't fix. Had problems taking in deep breaths due to the amount of gas pain i was feeling in my chest. Just took my breath away. Most of the gas pain is caused from them filling your abdomen with co2 so they can see better and it gets trapped in there. As far as actual lap site pain--was suprised that I didn't really have any. Ended up with 6 small lap sites. Was up in the chair and walking by 4pm. Had a morphine pca which didnt help my pain much, it just knocked me out and made me sleep. Pod #1 foley catheter removed, ivf slowed down, telemetry box dc'd. At 8am, started on 30 ml's/1oz of water per hour x 2 hours. Just took very tiny sips and tolerated it well. After this the morphine was discontinued and I was given liquid lortab for pain. it was amazing how much better that worked. still makes me sleepy but very good at controlling discomfort as well. At 10 am was given 60 ml's/2oz to drink in the first 15 minutes of the hour, then 30 ml's of water every 15 minutes for the rest of the hour..then repeat at the top of the next hour. I have to say I have been taking it slow and sipping and have had no nausea or any other issues. So wierd to be full from that small of an amount. I have been walking a hole into the halls here. Surgeon told me I was doing amazing and all my bloodwork looked good. The plan is for the nurse to call the md around 3pm to update him then hopefully i can go home. Ready to be home but so far it has been a pretty pleasant experience considering I really had no idea what to expect. If anybody has any questions or comments feel free to leave them for me. I enjoy reading everybodys experiences (good or bad) to help me prepare for what's ahead. Good luck everyone!!

    1 month update

Highest weight 299 lbs. Day of surgery 278 lb on 8/21/13. Current weight 263.5 lb on 9/21/13. Have had a stall for 2 weeks but I can see changes in pictures. No complications other than having a low blood pressure now. My normal was 120/90's hr 100's.....now im 90/50's hr 70's. I passed out from it a week ago. The doctors office said it was just my body adjusting. I can definitely tell when it gets really low so I am learning to deal with it. Exercising consists of walking 2-3 miles on the treadmill at least 4x a week and then doing some light weights and just random dancing lol. It's really hard getting Protein in but im trying my best. Drinking plenty of Water and tea w/ splenda. I just have to keep telling myself this is a slow process and a lifestyle change and I can't expect all the weight to fall off overnight. One step at a time!

    8/21/13 Gastric Bypass Story

I'm doing great as far as pain or nausea goes. Was able to clean the house today and do laundry. Not getting enough protein at all tho....my tastes have changed due to the ketosis but i'm staying hydrated. Go for my 2 week post-op appt on the 5th. Excited to advance my diet and find out why my weight won't budge lol.

    8/21/13 Gastric Bypass Story

The week before surgery I did 2 protein shakes a day and 1 healthy meal then the day before surgery was clear liquids.
  6. I feel your pain. I had my surgery on 8/21. Weighed 278 the morning of and 285 the next day when I was discharged due to water weight. I lost all that and down to 268 lbs within the first week post op. Now i am 12 days post op and still stuck at 268-270. It's very frustrating because like you said we are barely eating anything. I walked 2 miles on the treadmill yesterday and still no loss. Hoping it gets better!

    Protein shake makes me sick!

I am having the same problem. Loved the bariatric advantage shakes prior to surgery. I am now 3 days post op and it is a struggle to get my protein in. My tastes have changed...even the texture of it makes me sick. Have tried different flavors with skim milk or water. Even plain water makes me sick, tastes very bitter. Loved it before surgery. Strange how things change. Not really sure what to do. May call the office monday if i'm still having problems.

    water making me sick!

Before surgery I craved water and that is truly all that I ever drank. Now I am 2 days post-op roux-en-y and the taste of water is absolutely horrible to me now. It is the strangest thing! Propel zero has been my best friend. I have read a lot of posts where people's tastes have changed.
  9. Just had my surgery yesterday 8/21/13 but thought I would share my pre-op weight loss. Had to do 3 months of nutritional counseling.

I completely understand. I was the same way. Nothing can truly prepare you for how it's gonna go and how you are gonna feel. I just prayed...a lot..and here I am so far doing good. Best of luck to you! :-)
