HELP! i need to get back on track!
AliG replied to khalilmom90's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You all don't have any problems eating the bad stuff? My doctors office requires appointments with the nutritionist after surgery. In fact they have you pay $550 which is not covered by insurance, this gives you lifetime access to the nutritionist who you can call or see anytime. I'm not scheduled until 2/26 for surgery and I already have a binder full of papers and instructions from the nutritionist. Along with samples and coupons for different products. I can't believe some of your doctors did not give you more direction. It's no wonder why your feeling lost. -
My surgeons office did all the letter getting and approving for me. Do they usually have people do this themselves?

I find this thread very interesting because I too was wondering these same things. One week on this preop diet and I feel grumpy. One thing with me is that I have never had any body image problems. Never felt different being heavy, I still wore a bathing suit in public with out thinking twice. Neither my first or present husband ever said anything about my weight. So I'm not driven by the image part of weight loss. I am totally doing this for health reasons because I have a rare breathing disorder and by losing weight they can surgically get in closer to fix it. I am afraid I will be sorry I did this if I am nauseated and sick. I don't have any attachments to any foods. Just a bit scared I guess.

I'm there too. Seven days on pre-op diet. I'm starting to get grumpy and loath protein shakes. The 26th can not get here fast enough. Wish I could go to bed tonight and wake up on the 26th!

AliG replied to Pam Peltz's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm 52 and my surgery date is 2/26. Wish I had done it ten years ago when I first checked it out. But now is the time. It was so much harder to get insurance approval back then. -
It's not that I am really scared of anesthesia. It the time on the table that can irritate my collapsing airway and put me into realities arrest which has happened in past surgeries. The reason I started going to The Brigham in Boston (2 hours from my home) was because none of my local hospitals would put me under anesthesia, even Dartmouth didnt want to anymore. The Brigham always has the head of the department do it when I have surgery. I have had a total of 12 majors surgeries in the last four years, plus a number surgeries before that. My surgeon even told me there is a chance they will have do a actual cut surgery on me instead if endoscopic because of all my past abdominal surgeries may have too much scar tissue. I just had orthopedic surgery last month on a torn rotator cuff and torn bicep on my shoulder. Still having PT for that.

Whey protien smell and taste
AliG replied to A_newMeex3's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have no issues with the protein shakes but I'm a vegetarian who drinks and eats soy products already. It is probably the whey or the soy you are smelling that is bothering you. My pre-op diet for two week pre surgery is 4 protein shakes a day, 4oz protein, 2 nonstarchy vegetables, 2 fruits and 2 tbsp fat ( butter, salad dressing, light mayo...). So far I haven't been able to eat all that in one day. I was very surprised to find out today that my surgeon doesn't require anything different the day before surgery. I was expecting clear liquids or a clean out of some kind. But nope he lets you eat the pre diet right up to surgery...Cool Beans! I'm happy about that. It is so odd how they are all so different. -
Just had my pre op testing and anesthesia appointment. Also had pharmacy appointment since I'm on so many meds they are switching the ones that can't be crushed to liquid. My surgery date is Tuesday 3/26. I am a bit nervous because I have a very unusual breathing illness called tracheomalacia. It is found in newborns but very rarely in adults. What happens is my trachea collapses in on itself. I have has a number of surgeries for it but it is by no means resolved. I have been hospitalized many times for it. It is so rare that there was an article written about me in the New England Journal of Medicine. So the anesthesia consult was very important. I have never had a five hour surgery before and there is some concern about be being intubated that long. Told me I may go directly to ICU. When I was in ICU last year I was intubated on a ventilator for four days in a induced coma. They are hoping this surgery may help my issues. I bit nervous about it though. Glad I'm going to be in one of the ten top hospitals in the country (Brigham Womens in Boston).

The Pure ProteinShake is my favorite ready made. Only 120 calories, 1 g sugar and 23g protein.

I'm having some trouble trying to figure out what to eat the next two weeks. I have to start my two week preop diet. My doctors PreOp diet is per day: 4 protein shakes 4oz protein 2 non starchy vegetables 2 fruits My big problem is that I am Vegetarian. I'm having trouble trying to figure out what to eat for my protein. I eat eggs and cheese. I am used to eating with lentils, pastas, rices and potatoes all of which I can not have. Any ideas?

I don't know where I could find that, maybe Internet? I live way out in the country in the woods of NH. One change grocery store (Hannaford) and a general store in town. I love Gardein products and veggie burgers, just not having and BBQ sauce or bread or sauces make it less appetizing. I've tried edamame but they only had frozen, didn't like them that much wish I could find fresh. Thanks for all the ideas everyone this helps.

I haven't had my surgery yet (2/26). I was wondering how fast do you go through clothing sizes? Do most people just wear stuff that's too big until it falls off?

I'm from NH too. Where in NH? I'm in New Durham near Alton. Where did you have your surgery? I'm having mine at Brigham and Womens in Boston.

Last supper and my preop hopping spree
AliG replied to agirlofaith's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am having my last supper today. Chinese Food yum! Tomorrow I started my doctors two week preop diet. 4 protein shakes a day and 1 meal a day of: 4oz protein, 2 nonstarchy vegetables, 1 fat and two servings of fruit. Then sugar free jello, drinks and Popsicles. Seems mine is a much easier pre diet then most. -

I can't wait to: Tuck my shirt into my pants. Fit in an airplane seat and not dread someone sitting next to me. Buy cheap cute clothes in all stores. Surprise my husband in the bedroom. Wear a belt. Go snowshoeing. Be able to go up stairs. To cross my legs. To feel comfy in all the chairs in my house. To sleep in the same bed as my husband in the camper. Hiking, biking, swimming, walking, canoeing. Ride a horse. Feel healthy and get rid of medicine. To look cute and have men look at me not because of how big I am. To surprise my family (wish Mom & Dad were still alive). Get rid of all my old clothes. To be able to get in the floor to brush my dogs. To be able to shave every where and see it. To work out with my son. To stop having to check out weight limits for things. To get a job. To just do things without thinking about them first. To go to Victoria secrets for the very first time as a buyer. To wear cute underwear that is comfortable.

I am having bypass and my biggest fear is nausea. I have always had anxiety over throwing up and nausea, it's almost a phobia. My question to everyone is, do you always get nausea at some point? Is it like flue nausea? I am almost second guessing myself on doing this because I'm so concerned about it.

Hi all, I'm new here and already have gained tons of information you guys are great. I just got my surgery date 2/26/13. My doctor requires a ten lb weight loss before surgery so as to reduce the fat in the liver. I didn't that in a month, three months ago. Problem is I hurt my shoulder and ended up with a torn rotor cuff and torn bicep. Had surgery 1 1/2 months ago to repair. During that time I gained the ten lbs back. Now he made me promise to lose ten lbs before surgery on the 26th. He wasn't going to schedule me because of it and I pretty pleased him to death so he gave in. I am hoping I can keep that promise.

I had my husband come to all the doctor appointments and Nutrician classes with me so that he learned as I did. He is a skinny dude who can eat whatever he wants and never gains weight. I explained to him what it feels like to be heavy all the emotional social things. He is a great support. He even sold two of his favorite things, a pistol and a rifle, in order to get the final money we needed for me to have surgery. In ten years of marriage he never once said anything derogatory about my weight. My advice is try and talk to them, really explain your feelings to them and let them know how critical it is for you to get proper Nutrician.

Hey BTB2013 we have the same surgery date! Cool The only person who has tried to question me was my daughter-in law's Mother. My daughter-in law had bypass surgery three years ago before I met her. She lost 150 lbs also had plastic surgery after for skin. She was telling me how it was the best thing she ever did and how I am going to feel so much better. The. Her mother came up to me and said, your not really going to put yourself through all that pain and suffering are you? She went on to tell me how horrible it has been watching her daughter getting sick from dumping and how she doesn't understand why she would do that to herself. Well I thought to myself you are saying this right in front of your daughter who has done so well and is so happy. Then I sat back and looked at her mother and realized, it was right in front of me, I know why she had gotten so heavy. Mom is beautiful perfect figure and she more then likely part of the reason my daughter-in law had a weight problem. She had zero respect for her own daughter's feelings. Her daughter was the "ugly" duckling out of the family of four kids. Her sister is gorgeous and trim like her mom and they all call her princess and comment on how beautiful she is. Which she is both inside and out. I felt so bad for my daughter-in law having to play that roll a her life and even though she is now trim and a knock out they still are not acknowledging it.

Maybe not keeping it a secret?
AliG replied to groovykg's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well I posted it on my Face Book wall is tells you where I stand. lol I have received nothing but support and also in the process I found our other friend had the surgery themselves or are having it. I don't feel like its anything to hid. I am doing something proactive to make myself healthier. I have been extremely sick with breathing problems (tracheomalacia) having been in and out of the hospital and having had surgeries everyone understands it is for my health that I am doing this. First step to living yourself and the new you. Though I do have to say my daughter who is 17 is scheduled for surgery in July. She isn't telling anyone at school except her best friend. She just wants to lose the weight without a big announcement. I am so excited for her surgery she will get a new healthy body in which to start her young adulthood in. -
Shawna29, thank you for the advice that is all that I am doing. The Rex meat isn't a problem for me since I have been a vegetarian for a long time. I had actually gotten from 320 to present 286 in the last six months. Problem was my injury and surgery caused me to be in bed too much and stop activities. Thank you and good luck on your journey.
