I'm 60. Anyone else over 50 doing RNY?

Hello I'm 66 and had surgery 2/26/13. So far down 35 pounds and doing great. Never have been sick or anything. Only thing I'm having a problem with is my hair. It is currently breaking off and my hairdresser is having a fit (so am I). I heard it was low protein so I'm currently trying to increase my protein intake. Best decision I've ever made. When I was in the hospital I was the oldest one there. I walked up and down the halls with the best of them. I go for my 3 month check up in about a week and a half. I hope my bloodwork is good. I feel great.
  2. Had surgery 2/26/13, last week was down to 217. Just weighed and it was 233. WTF?

    Weight gain

Thank goodness someone said batteries. Put new ones in and weigh 216.8. I have been eating other things and just knew I had done something. I'm just 7 days away from getting to eat regular food. Maybe this was a way to tell me.....DON'T PUSH IT

I am off Levemir, Victoza and Metformin.....meaning all of them. My sugars have not gotten over 112 since my surgery which was a week and a half ago. No meds for diabetes nor blood pressure sinced my surgery. My drug bill will be almost nil now.

I'm 66 and had Gastric Bypass 2/26. So far so good. Medicare does pay for it with no waiting time and very few requireme nts. It does have to be done in a center of excellence tho
  7. Is it normal to gain back the weight I lost pre-op? I started at 245, did one week liquids lost down to 237, came home and now at 245 again

    2 more days

I'm sooooo hungry. Have been on liquid diet since last Tuesday. Surgery is Tuesday the 26th. I went to my Dr here in Lubbock on Thurs, felt like I was coming down with a cold. She gave me a shot of Roseffrin and a script for Keflex. Does not seem to be working. I have to travel 6 hours to Dallas for surgery. I have a little congestion in my bronchial tubes. What should I do?

    Fabulous February!

Do ya'll think someone is trying to tell me not to have this surgery? Got up this morning and there is 2 inchs of snow, weather advisory. I have congestion in my bronchial tubes, so doubled up on my Keflex. Does anyone know if this will hurt me? Schools are closed, county offices, airport closed. Having to drive to Dallas. Let me know your thoughts, we are leaving in 30 minutes with extra blankets and lots of prayers.

    OMG! April 16th!

I started mine Jan 15th and having surgery Feb 26th. You have to be a bitch and tell everyone your spots need to be NOW and follow up and then follow up again. I'm on Medicare and did not have to jump thru hoops time wise. One week liquid nearly killed me but just one more day.

    Pre Op Protein Search

I use Genesis Pure Protein powder. It's yummy and full of good protein and Vitamins. It comes in Vanilla, chocolate and Mixed berry. They also have liquid vitamins and liquid Calcium. Everything is natural, no additives in any of it. They gave several products that I think is going to help me. If interested in info let me know. I'm having surgery in 2 more days, the 26th Tuesday. Right now I'm congested. Went to My PCP Thursday, got a shot of Roseffrin and a s riot for Keflex. Does not seem to be helping. I live in Lubbock Tx and have to drive to Dallas 6 hrs away for the surgery. If I get there and they won't so it ill be devastated. Pray I get better.

  14. The reason I was given for the liquid diet was to shrink the liver. They have to operate around the liver and it makes it easier for the surgeon. I too am going to a center of excellence due to Medicare paying. That is one of their requirements.
  15. Ooooohhh I'll try that broccoli cheese soup. I got tonight the restaurants Au Jus and am going to mix that with cream of mushroom. Thought that sounded good. Of course the AuJus will be good also.
  16. I certainly will keep you posted. I have found that the best protein pre-made shake is Premier Protein. On the powdered shakes I mix them with the sugar free DaVinci flavorings. I used the vanilla powder, coconut and pineapple flavorings, put in blender with ice and it tasted like a Pina Colada. Try going by your favorite restaurants and get their soups to go and bring them home and drain the liquid off. Good. You didn't ask for that information but I have found it to be helpful myself.
  17. So you have cheated on the pre-op? I can only have liquids that will go thru a straw. I did have to eat some peanut butter due to my Type 2 diabetes. The Dr. in Dallas approved this and it did help. Actually the pre-op is only for a week, I'm due for surgery Tuesday. Thanks for being honest and telling me you cheated also. What is your date or what day on the pre-op are you on?
  18. I hate to admit this but I'm on my 4th day of liquids and so far has not been that hard. Have eaten out the last three days and order broth based soup and eat only the broth. This evening my husband and I went to eat and I did just fine on the soup. He brought home his left over fried chicken strips for the dogs. While I was feeding them to our dogs, I took several bites, chewed them up and then gave them to the dogs. Is this not sick? OMG it was so good. Am I really ready for this surgery? I am having the surgery Tuesday the 26th. Please someone tell me you have also done this. Spitting out food, Kinda sick.

    No One In The Sixties?

I'm 66 and surgery date 2/26. I'm type 2 diabetic and doing this for grandkids, get off meds, and myself. I have been out of pocket $850 since 1/1 for meds. That is my part after ins. The surgery will pay for itself. BTW Medicare pays for this. I had to pay the surgeon out of my pocket, but that's because he doesn't file Medicare due to their low pay.
