worried about looking like a deflated elephant
katiemay0101 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I just started my journey (surgery was 11 days ago). I am so excited that I will be losing the weight and will be able to keep up with my daughters, feel better, and live longer. The vain inner me is freaking out though. I haven't been average sized since before highschool and I am not niave. I know that I am going to have extra skin. I knew going in to this that it would happen, but I'm really not looking forward to the saggy thighs and deflated breasts :-( How do people further out deal with it? -
I do a lot of beans, eggs, cheese, kashi, etc. Before surgery I did soups as well. Vegetable soup, chili, egg drop, to mix it up. I'm not a fan of tofu so I had to get creative. Peanut butter is a good, quick fix but make sure you get the low fat. I just started trying the Special K protein meal bars (chocolate chip is awesome!). Good luck

I'm not as far out as you are but I had this issue for about 2 weeks. Turns out my allergies were dumping mucus (from my nose) in to my pouch and it did not like it one bit. It would cause me to gag from the minute I woke up until I fell asleep. I was put on a liquid benedryl and it's much better. Doesn't make it go away all the time but is better.

"Stalls" why do people Freak out!
katiemay0101 replied to tink65's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am one of those people that posted about a stall/gain. I even put in my post that my brain knows about stalls, knows it will eventually come off, etc etc. As a women that has been over weight my entire life I got enough of being grumbled at, being picked on, or even laughed at from everyone around me. So taking the steps to have surgery and share this experiance with others that are going through the same thing on this website seems wonderful. I thought this web site was about supporting each other and giving encouragement. Not to break each other down. I think we get or have gotten enough of that from the outside world. -
What does your typical food/water intake look like?
katiemay0101 replied to tzbandtobypass's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Breakfast: Special K Protein meal bar. (10 g of protein, YAY) Lunch: Usually 1/4 C of refried Beans topped w/ a little cheddar cheese Dinner: cottage cheese or yogurt Snack: 2T of Peanut Butter or 1/4 C of nuts and I drink Water all day. I'm allowed chicken, turkey, or fish but I've dumped on all meats that I've tried so far. -
Kristy3K can you give us an example of what you're eating each day so we can see where the protein is? I think thats my hardest thing right now. I'm only 5 weeks out and I'm supposed to be trying chicken and turkey but 1 bite and I feel like I'm about to dump. My stomach can not handle any kind of meat.

Gained 2 freaking pounds!
katiemay0101 replied to katiemay0101's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I ended up taking the regular dose ex-lax and 12 hours later I am so cleaned out I would probably whistle on a hill top. I have no idea if we are allowed to take ex-lax or not so please don't follow this advice without talking to your doctor (I tried calling mine but didn't get a call back). But I can say that it worked for me after not going for almost 2 weeks. I feel so much better and for the first time in a long time I didn't vomit when I ate. Gotta tell ya, it was a great feeling. -
I am ready to pull my hair out! I dropped 30 lbs in my first month and I know that is amazing. But for 2 weeks I have bounced between 208 and 204. I'm at 206 and I am frustrated. I can't get another drop of water in me, I'm meeting or exceeding my protein goals (my dr says 20-30 grams per day for 1st month) but I am beyond constipated, M of M isn't working, neither is miralax, or hot coffee/tea. Excercizing 30 - 40 minutes per day and nothing seems to be working. How in the world do you gain 2 lbs when you aren't eating more than 500 - 600 calories per day and you're working all of those off? I know, I know, I must have patients and the weight will come off but in this moment, this very moment right now...... I want to throw my scale through the window!

CEREAL how i miss u
katiemay0101 replied to tink65's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Has any of you tried the new Kashi that says it has as much protein as an egg? I meet with my Nut next week but am curious. My body desperately needs fiber (can you say constipation!) and I am wondering if the new Kashi wouldn't be perfect. I too miss my cereal so I may be looking for an excuse but so far it's been all about the protein (4 weeks out). -
BOWEL MOVEMENT REGULARITY
katiemay0101 replied to Dreday1067's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I did 2 days of M of M and then tried the Miralax. I even broke down and had a 1/2 vup of coffee and still nothing! Which stool softeners do y'all use? I'm not exactly in pain but I feel sort of "backed up". does that make sense? -
I had surgery on January 9th and I am about 3.5 weeks out. I wasn't a huge meat eater before the surgery but I can't seem to keep any meat in me now. I've tried tuna, talapia, chicken and turkey. when I eat any of this I don't get anywhere near the 1 oz before i am so uncomfortable. It feels like it's sitting right in my throat and then it comes back up. I'm not talkin about just once, I've tried a few times. Cottage cheese, string cheese (I can tolerate 2 of these at a time!) yogurt, and some beans are fine. I can even tolerate cashews but meat doesn't seem like it's ever going to work. Anyone else have this problem? Should I even bother or should I just go vegetarian?

Not Trying To Be A Downer But?
katiemay0101 replied to OleHippieGal's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am only 4 weeks out but I noticed my 1st change today. I used to take elevators every day at work and swore i would not use one after the surgery. Today was the 1st day I didn't even think about going up the stairs at work. It didn't occur to me until I reached the top that I had just taken the stairs and I wasn't out of breath. I walked briskly down the hallway and then went back down the stairs with a giant smile on my face. I have also noticed I look people in the eye more. I'm not a shy person but when I spoke to people I would look at the floor or anywhere but at them (especially men). I'm gaining confidence back and starting to look at myself in the mirror without cringing. I'm off my metformin, off my anti-depresant, and starting to realize that there is an amazing person inside. She's always been there but I am now gaining the confidence to show everyone else who I am. Good luck on your journey (((hugs))) -
If you vomit, do you try something else immediately?
katiemay0101 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've had some issues not tolerating foods. I'm learning what to eat and what not to eat. My question is, if you do end up vomiting do you wait a little bit and go find something esle to fulfill the protein requirement? After what I call one of my little episodes, I just can't face the thought of eating something else so I sort of skip it. I know we're supposed to get in the protein but after facing a potty I just can't face food again right away. Ugh! -

Never thought about letting my pouch rest. THank you so much for adding that. It all feels like a competition and how much protein you get in per day is the finish line. Ugh, I'm wore out. But thank you for the responses ladies. I hate that y'all are dealing with it too but I'm gladI'm not alone. -
Ex husband getting married & I can't stuff my face
katiemay0101 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
When he left I ate 2 pizzas and way to much ice cream. When he told me his 23 year old girlfriend (he's 37) was pregnant it was Chinese food and cake. He's getting married tomorrow and it's 2 oz of medifast. I am 9 days post-op and having to learn how to deal with these emotions without food just sucks. I have to say, this is really hard. It even crossed my mind to cheat and eat something but the fear of breaking my new pouch has kept me from it. My doctor doesn't allow his patients to move to soft foods until 2 weeks after surgery so I can't even do some cottage cheese or anything. I also don't have my beautiful daughters to occupy my mind. They're at the wedding. So instead I will do my nails, watch a chick film and go to bed early and just get through this weekend. If any of you have ideas on how to make it through this weekend without pulling my hair out I'd love to hear it. -
Such a gross question, but I need to ask.... (nasal drip)
katiemay0101 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So for about the last week I have had nasal drip. Yup, that lovely flow of snot going right down the back of my throat. I woke up this morning and it felt like my poor little pouch was packed full of it. Upon standing up the heaving started and that's all that came up. So my question is, how do I avoid this? Is there any OTC liquids I can take before going to sleep that will block the drip? My poouch deserves better than a vat of mucus. Blech! Thanks for any help. -
Possible to dump on pain meds?
katiemay0101 replied to Jessica9190's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I learned the hard way that if you drink them too fast you can get the flush/rush feeling. Remember we are supposed to be sipping all liquids. I learned the hard way that you can not "down" the medicine anymore. After doing it like a shot 2 or 3 times I realized that I needed to sip the disgusting tasting medicine and it went much more smothly. I hope this helps. -
It comes and goes with me. 1 day I am freezing and sitting with gloves on at my desk (my co-workers think I'm crazy) and the next day I am sucking down popsickles like its the 4th of July. Guess it takes a while for our internal thermostats to even out.

Anyone else have days when they are exhausted?
katiemay0101 replied to worm2872's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I felt that way this morning so I feel your pain. It was to the point where my eyes closed during a presentation. Ugh, need to find a way to give ourselves a little boost. :-) (3 weeks postop) -
I have no idea why it took 3 weeks for me to remember string cheese. So as a reminder to others that may have forgotten abotu string cheese, get some, they are wonderful and very portable :-)

PreOp liquid diet help!
katiemay0101 replied to Oxlaurenlove's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am a single Mom and here's what I did. I counted up how many meals I needed for my girls and pre-made them. It shortened the time I spent cooking in the kitchen when I started the shakes. I got little snack packs, filled them up and made one cabinet just for those 2 weeks. My girls thought it was great that they got to pick their snacks. My freezer was full of easy re-heat meals. I also asked my Mom to take my girls out for pizza half way through. Its my trigger food so it was really nice of her to take my girls for me so they didn't miss out. But ya, I pre-made everything. Good luck and I know you can do it. -
I'm like you. I count the minutes after eating and have it down to the second as to when I can start drinking again. I'm also a no sugar popsickle fan. Nothing I drink feels cold enough so the serious coldness of the popsickles helps a lot. You may want to try that. Just a thought. ps I don't know how easy it is to get popsickles so I hope you can find them.

One week postop what do you and drink now
katiemay0101 replied to copmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was on Protein shakes for 2 weeks post-op. Just started my soft food/pureed period for a week. I eat scrambled eggs (my pouch wouldn't tolerate hard boiled) greek yogurt, Peanut Butter, cottage cheese, popsickles. I was told not to eat soups. Especially cream soups because they are slider foods and will not stay in your tummy. I made what I call noodleless lasagna with some ricotta cheese, an egg, some parmigian cheese and some spaghetti sauce. It is really yummy. This site has some great ideas. http://www.froedtert.com/SpecialtyAreas/BariatricSurgeryProgram/Recipes/ Good luck -
Drinking do you still use the little cups from the hosiptal
katiemay0101 replied to copmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I used the cups for 2 weeks after getting out for of hospital while I was still on just protein shakes. Now I have a 20 ounce water bottle. I make sure I drink 1 before lunch, one before dinner and one after dinner. That way I know if I have fallen short or if I am doing good. Its easier for me to keep track. As for food, drinks, etc. I measure everything specifically. Hope this helps. -
I have a desk job and went back after 2 weeks. Was very tired by the end of day 1 but made it through. Just make sure to go to bed early and like one of the posters said, listen to your bodies.
