    Food Portions

I would refer that to your nutritionist with your program. I have found every program is different. I am on regular food and get the Atkins frozen meal and still can't eat 1/2. I believe during the soft phase I could have like a half cup.. I usually couldn't even finish that.

    Latest Meal

I think that is up too you. There is no WLS rule on last time of eating during the day. Everyone has different schedules so I think what works with you is the best way to do it. I work 12 hour shifts and often wait until I get home to eat supper so sometimes I don't eat til 8. In the summer we eat later. I tend to sleep in on my days off and don't eat my first meal til between 12-2. Some people need a little snack before they go to bed. I would just find something that works for you and your lifestyle. So the biggest thing is to make sure you eat something, protein first, take your vitamins and drink your water.

    Need soft food ideas

I don't think in the soft food phase they want you too- plus has way too many carbs in it and they want you too have more Protein. you could always ask your nut or surgeon

    Need soft food ideas

Do you like miracle whip?? they just suggested mixing it with something so it wouldn't be so dry.. Worked great. I love the chicken in a can. Maybe the tuna in a bag is more moist.. You could try just take tiny bites..

Help with hunger 4 days post op!

In the seminar and booklet that was given to us starting the WL program where I had surgery it talks about the three types of hunger. Stomach hunger is experienced mainly as hunger pangs and emptiness in the stomach. Is true, physical hunger Some symptoms include: stomach growls, feeling lightheaded, shaky, or possible headache Mouth Hunger is experienced mainly as an urge to put something in your mouth, to chew and swallow, ie, "the munchies". Primarily based on habit and availability of food. Heart Hunger is experienced mainly as an emptiness inside the "soul" and an urge to try to fill the emptiness with the food. Primarily based on patterns of trying to meet emotional needs with food. Eating in response to emotions such as loneliness, boredom, sadness, anger, etc. Try drinking, eating some Protein, finding an activity you enjoy, going for walk, calling someone, jumping on the computer, cleaning. Something to take you mind off of food. I do know that the first two weeks post surgery for me I was only on full liquids and would dream about eating. Once I was upgraded to soft foods I did much better. Hope this helps.

    Need soft food ideas

I also forgot to add eggs- scrambles, omelets- I even added some diced ham that was in the package for omelets and tolerated as it is small, soft and chew (add cheese to eggs), imitation crab chili I used Hormel in a can. Another item was the Atkins bake mix. You add a few items like egg and half and half (usually more then they call for and I made pancakes with sugar free syrup. The bake mix is high in protein, low carb and maybe 1 sugar. They are mashable with fork and soft and this helped alot. You can order the bake mix of Atkins.com or Amazon..

    Need soft food ideas

Chicken or tuna in a can with miracle whip. oatmeal, we could have string cheese and also fish if we could mash with fork. I also used cooked cauliflower and prepared like mashed potatoes, bananas, applesauce
  8. I took six weeks as I work as RN and I also work 12 hour shifts. I would strongly suggest taking around 2-3 weeks and longer if you can. I know the first two weeks I was tired and just trying to figure stuff out. It is nice to have a handle on eating, drinking and vitamins before adding the stress of work back into things.
  9. I would imagine as long as your wounds are completely healed you should be okay. Risk of infection would be the biggest worry with wounds not fully healed as water bodies are full of bacteria. then second is how active your surgeon will allow. Swimming if fairly low impact so my guess is between 2-4 weeks with wounds completely healed. I would still double check with your surgeon to see what he recommends.

    Soups?

I initially had lots of soups and now not as much as my diet has been upgraded. I still love a good soup and have a few higher protein ones stocked up. I am not highly sensitive to sodium and most of the food I eat is lower sodium and I also don't add salt to food so if I have a soup with sodium so be it. I am more worried about carbohydrates in foods, and protein content along with fiber.

    Day of Surgery stories

My surgery was Jan 24. I was not nervous at all. I stayed in the hospital Thurs-Sun. I had a rough 48 hours due to nausea related mostly to Fentanyl patch and PCA. I only stood at bedside day of surgery that evening as I would turn white and get sick. Never vomitted. They did a great job giving me many anti nausea meds. On Friday I only got out of bed a few times, short walks, still nauseated. they pulled my cath on Friday so i had to get up more to urinate- which was a good thing now thinking back. By Saturday afternoon once the patch and med were out of my system I felt so much better and was able to walk numerous times in hallway and sit in chair. I believe I showered on Saturday. Thursday and Friday are a blur as I was intoxicated on too much pain meds..lol. I was tired the first four days home and all i did was sleep and drink and take my pain meds. I slept in a reclinner the first 12 days as I am a side sleeper and i couldn't sleep in a bed. By my first post-op appointment 13 days later I was feeling much better and once they took the stitches out and advanced my diet to soft foods I felt like a new person. By one month out I was back to my old self and now at a little over 6 weeks I feel awesome. I have learned every person's experience is different. i was highly sensitive to the pain meds they used and once I was switched to oral hydrocodone and they took the patch off (which initially was forgotten) I felt much better. I still have OCC. nausea but Zofran sublingual is a miracle drug... Just follow the program designed by your surgeon. You will notice on here all surgeons are different regarding how fast they advance diet and rules.. Don't worry about others just focus on what they have designed as this has been what they have found to be successful for their program.. I should add that this is my first week back to work- took six weeks off. Best thing I could have done. Also your abdomen will be sore- I had a binder i wore in the hospital but when my stitches and areas healed my abdomen itched. It is also normal to be more sore on left upper quadrant this is where the heavy equipment goes in and they tork on the muscle. Remember to sip, sip, sip, find a Protein drink that works for you (don't give up as some have issues finding one that works), and take your Vitamins.

    Leaks

I know that the first 48-72 hours you have the highest chance of seeing a leak. My surgeon and program has us start taking in blue ice chips right after surgery and through the first 48 hours. We have jp drains and if we are leaking the blue would show up in jp drain. We also have a swallow study early the following morning (between 2-4 am and then another swallow study a few hours later. Basically checking for leaks and making sure pouch is emptying. After we pass that we are advanced in diet to jello, pudding, soup, milk. I am not sure how much longer after that we are at risk. I would imagine if you don't follow post op diet first two-three weeks you could bust out and leak. Good question for you surgeon

    January 2013 Post Op

First it is a diuretic and can lead to dehydration and getting enough fluids can be a challenge for gastric bypass patients at least in the beginning. Second after a gastric bypass, you are more sensitive to ulcers. Caffeine is something that may cause ulcers in some people, and it will definitely aggravate an existing ulcer if you've started to develop one. Third, I have read caffeine also interferes with the absorption of calcium after a gastric bypass. So if you are drinking coffee while taking your calcium you may not absorb your calcium. I also found a great article regarding caffeine. Enjoy http://www.gastricbypasscoaching.com/can-you-have-caffeine-after-gastric-bypass-surgery/

    Teddy grams

I order a lot of thing from amazon and find them fairly affordable. The would be a great treat every once in awhile and like you said the biggest thing is not too indulge.
  15. Just be careful with eating things you shouldn't too early. This can be something that can cause a stricture especially early on when you are still healing. It is amazing how different everyone's journey is. Some have great difficulty and some it doesn't even phase them. I have done well myself some nausea but nothing zofran can't take care of. I am a little over six weeks and on regular foods-finally as of last Tuesday and actually had my first salad YIPPEE!!!!. Still don't eat much most days but get all my Protein, Vitamins and Water in.

    Teddy grams

Has alot of carbs. I like the atkins or some of the protein bars. Low to no sugar, low carbs.
  17. I guess I would be contacting my surgeon if I was throwing up and couldn't eat. Sometimes that can be a sign of a complication. You will never eat like you once did but you should be able to get food in without pain as long as you are chewing well and eating slow. I would also suggest getting Zofran if you have any nausea. It does take time, every program and surgeon is a little different about how they stage their foods and how long you are to eat that food. I am a little over six weeks and feel awesome. I would say about 4 weeks out I started to really feel good. Hang in there..

    pre-op testing?

Every surgeon is different and it also depends on age and current health issues. I had tons of lab work done. I didn't need an EKG, sleep study or EGD prior. I did have to make an appointment for a psych eval and had dietary consultation for six months via phone.

    Sparkling Water?

I would think the carbonation is a no no.. It can cause gas and discomfort-would be off limits for same reason pop is.
  20. Try snacking on something higher in protein. String cheese, meat and cheese rolled up. Usually satisfies you and keeps you full
  21. Another thing to ask for is a scopolamine patch. I had one or two well in the hospital and was also sent home on one. They are good for 72 hours and really dry up secretion. They also work wonders..
  22. I am a little over six weeks out and have had nausea that comes and goes. I was sent home with sublingual Zofran and it is a miracle drug. I discussed prior to surgery how I hate nausea and wanted to make sure we had a plan in place. Of course I had severe nausea due to the initial pain med and PCA i was on but it got much better after 48 hours. By the time I discharged I was much better. I know can eat something and sometimes feel slight nausea and I take a pill it dissolves in my mouth and usually i feel better within 15 minutes. On occasion I have had to lay down and take a nap. I have NEVER thrown up.. You should be able to tolerate sitting and doing homework just depends on pain and how much narcotic you are taking and how you are feeling. I would strongly advise you to take the first 7-10 days off and just heal. I took six weeks of from work and will be going back on Tuesday of the upcoming week but I work as a RN in a hospital and have to lift patients and work 12 hour shifts. You will more then likely not be able to life anything over 10 pounds for the first 2 weeks if you have laproscopic surgery. Then they say slowly increase and by a month should be able to lift 30. Just be careful bc you don't want to bust anything open or get a hernia. So if your hubby can be around for first 14 days that would help you lots. Every person has different experiences and every surgeon has different rules. I would strongly suggest running some of this by your surgeon so he can give you the best information for your program. Good Luck
  23. Well, medicine is different abroad. She obviously has no knowledge or information on benefits of weight loss surgery and is just going by what she may have heard. You are going to get tons of people that want to put their two sense in and they don't know what they are talking about. I just let them know that I have educated myself and feel very confident along with my primary doctor that this is the right decision for me. Don't let one ignorant person ruin your day....

    Coffee after RNY

My surgeon says no too caffeine. He states we can do decaff but doesn't want us drinking coffee or pop. One reason was risk of ulcers and there is other theories out there regarding why no soda. My thought is I will wait a year and I may have an occasional coffee. Not a huge coffee drinker to begin with but every once in awhile I enjoy one.

    Garnier Shampoo..Omg!

4 days post op sounds a little too soon to be losing hair due to deficiency. It is likely it is some response to just having a surgery. I am almost 7 weeks out with no issues-yet...I am not taking biotin yet but am looking at taking it. I get all my protein in and then some and also take all my vitamins. Hoping I don't have major issues..
