Is there a flush for everyone before surgery.
nienie replied to Rena1979's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't have any prep before surgery except to be NPO (nothing by mouth) after midnight prior to surgery. Every surgeon and program is different. -
Never tried the smart ones but I have used the Atkins frozen meals and they have a meatloaf. I tolerate them fine and actually bring one everyday for lunch. I can't eat the whole meal but at least it is a low carb low to no sugar meal.

For me, I usually get nauseated either while eating or shortly after. I would think that the next day it is not from something you ate the night before. Do you have zofran? I would ask for a prescription of sublingual for days or times your are nauseated. I have read that some people get nauseous if they are hungry and or thirsty.

Vitamins..in what order?
nienie replied to RoxyFoxy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I take my thiamine, multi Vitamin and B-12 in the morning. Then between 12-2 I take my chewable calicum with Vitamin D 500. Then between 5-6 I take another multi vitamin Then at bedtime I take a chewable calicum citrate/vitamin d 500 again. The most important thing is to wait 2-3 hours between Multi vitamin and calcium due to absorption issues. Some people take calcium three to four times a day and this depends on the strength of calcium. I know calcium chews you need to take more of. If i were taking Biotin or Iron I would take those in the morning right away but I am not taking either of those at this time. -
4weeksout and wvetything i eat hurts going fown

Call your surgeon. You could have a stricture. I would only drink liquids today and until you talk to your surgeon. Usually if things are hurting and feeling stuck or you are vomiting you have a stricture which they can easily take care of outpatient. Just don't let it go too long or you will get dehydrated and have all kinds of problems. -
I know that some of your vitamins need to be in a chewable or liquids form because we don't have the stomach acid to help breakdown for absorption. I take many other pills whole ie, beta blocker, birth control, tylenol. I know that my thiamine is a capsule and okay to swallow. It is also from bariatric advantage so my doctor felt good about that. I would always ask your doctor what he wants and what he suggests.

Protein powder need a new brand
nienie replied to copmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I buy mine from amazon.com for a reasonable price. I initially bought samples of the different juice nectars at Vitalady.com. I always check with amazon before purchasing something first but they don't have samples. -

Congrats to being in the 100's... That itself is an awesome accomplishment. How tall are you? What is goal for you? I do know that the closer you get to goal the slower it can come off and those of us who have less to lose, lose slower. Just hang in there... -
Welcome Wendilou

Protein powder need a new brand
nienie replied to copmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I use Syntrax Nectar and my favorite is strawberry kiwi. I had lots of trouble finding a protein drink as I LOVED the Atkins shakes prior but after surgery anything milky made me nauseous. I still use unjury too just the chicken broth one. I ordered samples originally from vitalady.com to test different juicy flavors. She has good deals and this made more sense then buyin a huge tub and then finding out I didn't like it. -
My surgeon strongly urges against using straws. He says you can take in too much liquid and he has seen some get terrible gi distress from the air sucked in with the straw. So far I don't miss them but I am also only 7 1/2 weeks out. I am sure down the road I may try them but I have enough problems with gas don't want to add unwanted air to my pouch.

Scrambled eggs have been my go to food I have been eating them since 3 weeks out. It amazes me just how different each of us are with what we tolerate and don't tolerate. I am thankful eggs don't bother me.

Day 3 post-op weenie.
nienie replied to cranialmalady's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First you are not a weenie! GBS is a big surgery and it hurts. I was in the hospital for three nights. I was very nauseated from the Fentanyl pain med I was giving and once i was switched to liquid hydrocodone I did much better. I cried the day I went home when they pulled out my God forsaken JP drains. So you are not alone. I had some head hunger but was not hungry just thought about food mostly because I was limited to yogurt, Soup that was strained, Jello and pudding. Just drink as much as you can and get that Protein in. I lived on my pain elexir for the first week sleeping a lot because to be honest you don't sleep much in hospital. I also was unable to sleep in a bed so I had to sleep in a recliner which was a downer. I am a side sleeper and it hurt way to much to lay in the bed. Your left side is going to hurt. Once i got my stitches out on day 13 things went much better. My diet was upgraded to soft food, I could sleep in a bed, still sore but those darn stitches were no longer tugging at my skin. I still used hydrocodone at night and as needed. So hang in there it will get better. I am now 7 weeks post op and I feel great. I was upgraded to regular food last week and have lost 37 pounds. So, it does get better. I no longer have any pain at all. You are on the mend each day will get better -
Pizza- many different things you can do. There are tons of low carb options and recipes. You can also make a frozen pizza and just eat topping or if you are somewhere they are having pizza have the topping. I have actually had a piece of regular pizza- no craving, can't finish the whole piece. I for one will not want to eat pizza all the time but will enjoy on occasion. I for the most part eat very low carb 20-40 grams a day so every once in awhile it is nice to treat yourself. Moderation is key. FYI- flat outs make great pizza crust. I also have found several good recipes using almond flour and flax seed. Prevention magazine just had a great low carb recipe. I also have made meatza where you make hamburger meat the bottom cook it in oven and then add the toppings and broil..

Anything liquid counts, water, protein shakes, juice, coffee, soup, jello, pudding, and yogurt.

I never had to crush my pills. The only thing I had to do was cut my pills in half for the first 2 weeks. I didn't start my Calcium, b-12 or MVI till 2 weeks. And at one month I started thiamine. Those were the only restrictions for me. I have no problem taking whole pills now at 7 weeks out. However, I would call your surgeon for direction on this because every surgeon is so different and you want to do what is expected for your program.

i dont know if i am hungry
nienie replied to cocoshanel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know liquids get tiring initially. I did liquids 13 days post op but it is so important to follow the staged diet for healing of pouch and to prevent complications like strictures. Just keep drinking, taking in soup. I found chicken broth worked best for me to get all my liquids in. I could put it in a cup and helped to prevent dehydration. Crystal light works wonders in water too to make it taste better and jazz it up.. Hang in there-there is a reason for this stage of the game. -
i dont know if i am hungry
nienie replied to cocoshanel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What staged diet are you?? When I came home from hospital I was full liquids so soups (strained) yogurt, pudding and liquids. I usually drank as much as i could all day and ate two to three times a day. Did they not give you some sort of guide?? My program gave us a booklet sample times and sample foods. If they didn't I would call them and tell them you need something. You probably won't feel hungry but right now you need to get liquids and protein in!! -
I get bloated some and have horrid gas. I started taking Devrom and it helps so much.....

Does anyone regret having the surgery. If you do why
nienie replied to marypip's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No regrets. I had a little rough patch with nausea but nothing meds couldn't take care of. I am almost seven weeks out, advanced to regular food last week. Lost approx 36 pounds and couldn't be happier. I feel great and have way more energy. The biggest suggestion is to follow YOUR program that your surgeon has designed for you. Don't worry about what other can and can't have. If you follow what they tell you, get your Protein in and drink Water you should do great. Remember every person is different so don't compare yourself to someone else that might have had the surgery at the same time you did. I see too many people upset because they are x amount weeks out and only lost x amount of pounds. Every pound lost makes us healthier. The WLS is ONLY a tool and not a quick fix. Hope this helps... -
January 2013 Post Op
nienie replied to ready2smile's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Okay-First you have to ask yourself would you have lost 45 pounds without the surgery??? 45 pounds is a lot of weight so be proud of what you have accomplished. Everyone loses differently so STOP comparing yourself to other people. Second what are you eating? Are you getting all your protein in? Are you getting all your liquids in? Are you measuring yourself? If you are menstruating you could be retaining fluid. Are you on any medications that would make you retain fluid. You could always call your nutritionist and see what her suggestions are? Are you working out? Remember WLS is only a tool and not a quick fix. Follow the guidelines but forth by your surgeon and just keep working on it. Everyone has stalls and some even jump up a few pounds and then drop. Dont weigh yourself everyday rather maybe once a week. I am not sure what your expectations where with WLS but I am thinking if you are so frustrated that they were not realistic. Keep your head up... -
I eat lots of eggs daily. Have had no issues. Everyone is different. I know that if you are not feeling well, get nauseated after eating a certain food that you should stop eating but try again a few weeks later. Eggs are a great protein source
