Well, what does your surgeon's guidelines state about portion sizes at your stage of the game?? I can at times it 1/2 or a little more at one time but not very often. Usually I eat about 1/2 of whatever it is I make. I also only eat about 2 times a day bc that is all that I am hungry. I do get it all my protein and am losing weight just fine. Are you losing weight? Are you getting in all your protein first?? Do you feel full after eating 1/2 cup? I would say as long as you are losing and not getting overly full and following your doctors guidelines you are fine. Everyone is different and every program is different.

nienie replied to LeticiaHuggins's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Very normal and it may last longer then normal just because the surgery whacked out our systems. I had just gotten over my period one week prior to surgery and about a 5 days after surgery got my period it last 14-15 days was light but annoying... -
Transition of Pureed Foods to Regular Foods
nienie replied to Jill Klein- Auerbach's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Try one maybe two new items a day and not at the same time. I agree with someone above not to try new items when at work or out because you never know if it will make you sick and it is much better to have issues at home. -
Slow and steady wins the race!!!!

Kinda wish I had a dumping issue, so I would not keep testing my sweet tooth so much!
nienie replied to Marla's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm too scared to even try anything. We had my grandma's 80th birthday yesterday with yummy chocolate cake and cupcakes and ice cream and I stayed away- tooo afraid of getting sick. I guess I just am not tempted with the sugary food yet so I am not even gonna try it.. And hopefully when and if I do I hope I get madly sick and dump because that will solve that problem... -
My surgeon allows Zyrtec D because of my allergies. Benadryl doesn't work and makes me tired and sudafed does nothing for me. I take a 12 hour pill versus a 24 hour pill and no problems and it works fine on me at this time

I take zyrtec D. Used to take claritin D but Zyrtec D works better.

Best of luck on your journey. It goes fast believe it or not. I had a six month supervised diet and it still went fast when all was said and done. My process started in May and I had surgery the end of January. Lots of great support and information. Bottom line is follow the program your surgeon has put together. As you read on here you will notice all the discrepancies-and when it comes down to it you want to be successful so follow your rules and you will do great....

At some point you can but moderation and not much. Most people get too full of off carbs and then don't eat the nutritious part of meal (meats, veggies and some fruits.) I know of people that will have a slice of pizza occasionally but they typically try to eat very low carb, low sugar. I am two months out and I use Atkins penne ordered of amazon and make homemade mac and cheese another Pasta dish with. They are lower in carbs then regular pasta. You can also look for whole wheat breads and pastas. You really want to change your way of eating because those processed foods high in carbs, pizza, pasta are what most of us over indulge in. I would guess 75% of us are carb addicts and if we would concentrate on low carb foods we would have no cravings and probably wouldn't have gotten into the situations we did (me including). There are lots of good pizza substitutes out there if you love pizza.....

Need recipes for cream of.... any vegetable... help anyone?
nienie replied to Marisela's topic in Food and Nutrition
Heavy cream is low in carbs so it isn't too bad for you. You could use milk or laughing cow cheese wedges for flavor I like to make cauliflower and cook it then put it in blender or food processor and add all the fixings you would for mashed potatoes. They are delicious and a great substitute to mashed potatoes since potatoes are high in carbs...Other options is too use like cream of chicken soup for recipes. I do use real butter and milk for my cauliflower and use mrs. dash seasoning. -
Yes, I would find ones higher in protein and i used milk to increase protein. One of my favorites was cream of Potato.

I have been fairly honest with everyone just because I feel everyone struggles. For some when they say you look so good I thank them. If they really pry I just say I had a procedure. You could say diet, exercise, cutting calories to xxx. I completely understand about not wanting to lie- I do struggle with this a bit because I don't feel everyone needs to be up in my business. I was completely honest at work with everyone and most of my family knows,. I live in a small town and I figure people will probably find out or suspect when I lose a lot of weight fast.

Its the small things that make me happy....
nienie replied to juditha's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a RN in a hospital and I have to say losing weight has given me more energy for my 12 hours shifts. I feel better about myself and am way more positive. I also love that I don't obsess about food anymore and I eat to live not live to eat. There are so many positives from this surgery... -
My guess is if you are eating regular foods you could try it. I haven't tried PB yet except for the PB in protein bars...

Anyone tried eating 8 days post op?
nienie replied to mfee08's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I realize how it feels to be ready to advance your diet I would just really follow your program guidelines. I have read horror stories about people eating foods they shouldn't to early. Even though soft food is probably not going to hurt you- what is a few more days. Ultimately it is your decision... -
Surgery was 3/19, Discharged 24 hours after RNY?
nienie replied to Ab1986's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Every program is different. I had surgery on a Thursday and was out of the hospital Sunday afternoon. That is the norm for my specific program. They like to watch us for at least 48 hours for leaks since that is a high prevalence time to get them and make sure we are tolerating full liquids. -
Anyone tried eating 8 days post op?
nienie replied to mfee08's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Why would you sabotage your WLS?? You are only 8 days out and it is so important to follow the guidelines that you were given. Follow your surgeon's program-if you don't that is where problems and complications begin. One of the main complications that can occur from trying no foods to fast is a stricture. I have not had one but they aren't fun and when you have one you need to go back in for an outpatient procedure. Im not saying that six months to a year from now you won't cheat on foods we shouldn't eat but being so early out just don't do it. -
I didn't have to be on any certain diet for surgery. I was just to not eat anything after midnight before surgery. Every surgeon and their program is different. I had no issues and am thankful I wasn't on any major restrictions.

There are other meds you might be able to be on. Just make sure your surgeon knows...

Okay-you have lost over five pounds a week. i don't think you can get discouraged at this time. If you told me you had not lost weight for the last two months then I would say I would be frustrated. Don't have unrealistic expectations. A loss is a loss and as long as you are going down on the scale be happy. Ask yourself if you could have lost 36 pounds in 5 weeks without the surgery. I am 8 weeks out and have lost 39 pounds and am very happy. If I compared myself to you I could be depressed but I know we all lose at different rates.

I would talk to your surgeon and primary. I know that prior to surgery I was having some increased problems with menstrual cramps and was taking too much Ibuprofen. I went to a OB/GYN per my primary and was put on bcp and this decreased my pain and therefor didn't need any more ibuprofen. So I would definitely talk with your doctors because NSAIDS are a no no.

Need too highlight my hair
nienie replied to Foranewme's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been getting my hair colored and highlighted with no problems. A good friend is my hairdresser and she is aware I had surgery. The have gentle products they can use on hair. I figure if my hair gets yucky looking I will cut it short and start the growing process over.. After all it is just hair. I have gray so I will continue to color my hair. -
With a UTI, you often have burning or pain with urination. You usually feel like you constantly have to go to the bathroom. Your urine may have a soul smell or be blood tinged or have mucus in it. I would go in and get checked as a UTI can easily turn into a kidney infection. There is an over the counter med that will help with the discomfort but since you sound symptomatic you also need antibiotics. UTI's can happen after a catheter but usually you see them within a week. You can get a UTI from not wiping properly front to back. You should also urinate before and after having intercourse so bacteria doesn't get up there and cause infection. I would call your primary doctor and see if you can at least bring a urine specimen in. Drink TONS of Water and some people swear by cranberry juice.

I have not experienced any depression issues yet. However, I have spoken with other who have. One of my coworkers had an identity crisis about 14 months out and has been on a low dose of Zoloft to help her. Celexa is another good medication. Just remember most of these medications need to build up in blood stream before they become fully effective. So sometimes it can take 2-6 weeks depending on medication. If a month down the road you are still feeling depressed contact your doctor as you may need an increase or med change. I have also heard of some people talking with a therapist and this has helped. The biggest thing is that you get help and get the depression under control.. Best of luck

teeth problems tooth decay
nienie replied to Fixerupper's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My aunt is 20 years out. Has not lost any teeth and has kept her weight off. I will say that if you follow your program, take in all the recommended protein, vitamins and other things you should be fine. Some people have rotten teeth to begin with. I have known many people years out from RNY and no tooth loss.
