Nutritional guidelines post-op? Does anyone have the breakdown?
nienie replied to Cecilia's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
WOW- I am a little over 4 weeks out and I only get 300 to 400 in a day. I just can't eat much at all and am not hungry so am concentrating on protein, staying very low carb and liquids.. -
These sound so yummy... I had a low carb peanut butter cookie recipe that was similar without the protein powder but I love the idea of adding high protein. Thank You!!!

STRICTURE? Please help me

I still would call your surgeon and see what he says. It should not hurt when you eat if you are taking small bites and chewing well. I would be very concerned about this. Do you have papya enzyme?? That does help when food gets stuck you can find them at Walmart and they are chewable.. They are a must.. -
WOOHOO!!!! Great accomplishment... Keep up the awesome work

A scope is something they use with a camera to go and check the intestines. You can have a colonoscopy and look and lower intestines entering thought rectum or have an EGD and look though upper intestines. The call the instrument they use a scope. Dilate just means to make larger, stretch. Basically when you get a stricture the new stoma opening has narrowed and partially and or fully closed and they need to reopen this so food can pass through. -

I would imagine they give you something... When we do EGD's at hospital we put them under briefly.. Not fully under like when we had surgery but usually with a little versed or something. It is a quick procedure and you are usually in and out within a few hours.. -

They do an outpatient procedure called an EGD. They go done your throat with a scope/camera and reopen the stoma opening. I have heard there is not much too it... -

Praying for you. They did tell me that sometimes if you back off and go back to liquids for a few days and then try soft food everything is okay. I hope you don't have a stricutre but if you do it is an easy fix... Keep us posted.. -

I am at 4 weeks and have lost 24 pounds. I think 29 pounds in 5 weeks is awesome... Way to go!! -
I was told that at some point like a year out I will be able to have steak occasionally Some people don't tolerate red beef well but it is a great Protein. I know it can be discouraging but there are lots of people on here that work the program like they are suppose to. We are all human and sometimes we get tempted and cheat but most if they really want the WLS to work and use it as the great tool it is will stick to what their specific program tells them to do. I do understand when you come upon posts that are asking when they can eat all those wrong foods as this is not why you had the surgery. Most of us ate those foods and that is what got us into trouble. Kudos to you for being 11 weeks out and sticking to the program. You will be one of the very successful ones. Just don't give up because there really are some awesome people on here with lots of experience who have been very successful and like I said before followed their program like their surgeon asked them too.

Issues w tender tummy?
nienie replied to rockin jessie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I take it just as needed. I have thought about taking it prior to drinking protein shakes but somedays the protein shakes go down good. So for now I just have it on hand for those moments..Nothing worse then being nauseated. When that happens I don't want to eat or drink and before having Zofran got myself dehydrated one day so the benefit of the Zofran is tremendous. -

I have my days. Somedays I can drink my atkins protein drink and some days I get nauseated. I also have issues with foods at times. Most days are good days except with those protein drinks. I found that having a prescription for zofran has helped tremendously. My surgeon who has been doing gastric bypass surgeries since 2008 says he has zero patients walking around with chronic nausea. I have just heard especially the first six months and some longer that your pouch needs to adjust. I am a month out today. -

I also steam my cauliflower either in microwave safe bowl or stove and I use a blender or magic bullet to mashed or puree them. I have not tried laughing cow but will now. I used cream and or milk, butter. -
OMG- how scary. Wishing you a speedy recovery...

My surgeon said you will be able to drink with a stricture just not eat. You will either feel like food is stuck or get nauseous and vomit as food wont pass easily. I would definitely call your surgeon and see what he thinks. You shouldn't be having problems eating. I do know that they warned my about trying one new food item a day as trying to many items can cause this. Other causes can be eating too fast, and dehydration. Sometimes people can do everything correctly and still have them. Good Luck and keep us posted. -

I initially had pain on the left side and my surgeon said that is because that was the side he had to put big equipment through like the stapler and the really tork on the muscles. I was sent home with liquid hydrocodone and that helped alot. I guess since you are so far out I would really contact that surgeon again. I know for me until my stitches came out I couldn't sleep in a bed so for the first two weeks I used a recliner but after that I have been get much better.. Hope you get some answers and or relief soon. -
Great info.. I loved the Atkins protein shakes prior to surgery and in the first two weeks. Then all of a sudden something changed and some days I can drink them and some days I get nauseous and need Zofran. I have tried a few other protein drinks but they are so milky and sweet and I just don't like them they make me sick. I have been looking into the Unjury brand thinking I could try chicken broth, unflavored and the cheese. I really wish I could find a more juice based protein drink that was good... Any suggestions??

I use the great value light nonfat yogurt from Walmart. I get strawberry banana and blueberry and I tolerate them well. i have tried numerous greek yogurts and other high protein yogurts but they hurt my pouch and or I don't like the taste at this point.

Pre-Op Liquid Diet is a fail for me, HELP!
nienie replied to amcdowell779's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
See if you can do a low carb diet... That usually helps.. I have also seen some where they have to have three protein drinks a day and one meal 320 cal or less and all the veggies they want. I would definitely see what else they can do for you.. If anything this is proof as to why this surgery is so important.. Good Luck -
3 weeks out & STARVING
nienie replied to Jessica9190's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had surgery 1/24/13 and I am onto soft food. I also occasionally have nausea and my doctor gave my a prescription for sublingual Zofran and that help alot. Also somedays a food doesn't sit right but the next day it does. Ideas for food- cottage cheese, Soup with milk used instead of water, chicken and or turkey in a can with a little miracle whip, yogurt, fish, string cheese, eggs- i scramble and egg with a little mozzarella cheese and it is great. Refried Beans with cheese mixed in, mashed potatoes, mashed cauliflower (make like mashed potatoes). I don't know if this helps. I take very small bites like eraser size and chew, chew, chew..... I will also add- I had stitches in for the first 13 days and I couldn't even sleep in a bed. The pain is much better I am guessing the stitches are bugging you and pulling on the new skin. I would contact your doctor and see if there is anything he can do. Hope you feel better soon.. -
I think this is normally. Remember your body has been through alot with the surgery. I too had my period prior to surgery and then a week later had it and still kinda do. If you are really concerned I would contact your doctor or OB/GYN. If you are bleeding alot (very heavy) for a longer then a week I would contact your doctor..
