  1. I'm 3 weeks out and have been having issues with any liquid that is not hot. Even room temperature causes pain. But today, I happened to drink from a straw (totally forgot about the rule, and I was able to drink like, 6 oz of iced tea over the course of an hour. When I realized how much I'd gotten down, it suddenly dawned on me that there had not been the same pain. No pain at all, actually. Maybe I take smaller sips with a straw, but I think I've solved one of my problems. I'll try a Protein shake later and try to sip it with a straw to see if I get the same result. Last night I had to drink the Protein Shake by taking a sip of hot Water first, followed by the room temperature shake. Are straws really so bad? I have a follow up appt next week. Today I took a nibble from a chocolate chip cookie and I sipped iced tea from a straw. Whatever will become of me? Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk
  3. Illness has an incubation period of 3-7 days. It wasn't "those people." Your mother likely had a bacterial bronchial infection, which is why you didn't catch it. Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk

    Fabulous February Post-Op's

I went to a shopping center last night that I don't usually frequent, but got all excited when I saw they had added a new Lane Bryant. Then I was like, "oh. I guess that won't matter for long." Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk
  5. Having a hard time because I can't consume anything cold or even remotely sweet, including my chewable Vitamin and all Protein drinks. My flavored Greek yogurt is really pushing the sweet, and I'm done after a few bites. The only thing that sounds remotely appealing in my head is probably a no-no. During pre-op, I would add a little bit of diet root beer to my vanilla Protein shake. I remember it kind of being flat and not fizzy, but I hesitate getting any diet root beer because I feel like the carbonation would still be "there" even if I couldn't detect it. Thoughts? 6. As stated, I'm just over 2 weeks out. I'm supposed to be on puréed, but I am still hungry all the time. No appetite for anything sweet, like pudding, shakes, or yogurt. Everything I had tried has sat well: banana, bacon, white fish, tuna, and chili, so I feel like I could eat something more substantial. I had chili yesterday and today, and while yummy, it's essentially chunky Soup. I want real FOOD! Like, a hamburger. Or a buffalo chicken salad from chilis. I want to eat and chew. But at the same time, I'm so scared. Is there a gateway food anyone could suggest? Like, something that will satisfy but is not likely to upset the pouch? Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk

    What ya eating tonight?

Navigated a buffet tonight at 2 weeks post op. I ate mashed potatoes and took a chance on some white fish, which I hadn't experimented with before. Both were fine. I did throw some applesauce and a protein shake in my bag just in case. Didn't need to use them.

Just as an FYI- 1000 calories is great. 1200 is even better. If you want your metabolism to keep working, u can't make your calories too low. Now, I say this after just having an 80 calorie yogurt and a few tablespoons of hummus the whole day, but one day I will be able to eat. Also, my favorite "wings" are just the chicken drummettes from the grocery store with garlic salt and onion powder and baked in the oven. I would advise avoiding fast food as much as possible and learning to prepare whole foods because the chemicals and preservatives can all kinds of health problems.

    What ya eating tonight?

Changing the subject... I picked up an idea from YouTube from someone who was on purees and mushy foods: hummus using Gerber Graduates as the vehicle. I got those long cynlinder puff things that kind of dissolve in your mouth, veggie dip flavor and dipped in plain hummus. Omg, it was like the greatest thing I ever tasted.
  14. I would recommend a mini chopper/processor from Cuisinart ($30) for chopping apples. I have a $20 Hamilton Beach with a glass carafe as my blender. I bought it 14 years ago and I have been waiting and hoping it would conk out so I could justify the purchase of a new blender, but ya know what? It's pretty great.

    What ya eating tonight?

Bacon! I ate bacon! I actually had a bowl of baked potato soup but made bacon for my husband's BLTs, and it just smelled so good, so I decided to taste it, and it just disintegrated right in my mouth. It was heavenly. So I had a few more teeny pieces and then just waited for some kind of reaction from the pouch, but everything has been awesome! Soup was good, but such a let down after tasting that bacon.
  16. A friend who doesn't know about my rny has asked me to join her at a dinner theater, for which she has tickets, but her husband can't attend. It's a buffet, so I'm not sure how to navigate it. I will tell her I had hernia surgery or something and can't really eat, but I'm sure there's something I can have. My doc has me on purees. In sure there will be soup. Are mashed potatoes ok? Would watermelon be ok? I'm so nervous.

    Fabulous February Post-Op's

I had this. I'm 2 weeks out and my left side pain in pretty unbearable unless I'm pushing on that 1 incision area. I have an ice pack strapped to my stomach to help with pain, since my pain mess barely did anything. I ordered an abdominal binder yesterday. Absolutely can't wait for that sucker to get here.
  20. Years ago, I learned from all kinds of sources that wounds heal much faster when covered with a bandaid, creating a kind of moist environment, and it reduces scarring. On Friday, surgeon removed steri strips and didn't say anything more, but I've been fretting about the whole moist wound thing for the past few days. This morning, I decided to apply neosporin and cover the incisions with band aids. Everything is closed except the drain site, which is fairly ooky. Does anyone have any knowledge about this?

I discovered them over multiple business trips to Atlanta. While I don't dare compare mine to that of an experienced Southern chef, they were still bomb-diggity.

    What ya eating tonight?

Just quick cooking grits made with skim instead of water (for protein). Then I threw in a few handfuls of cheddar and stirred in maybe 1/2 cup of LF cottage cheese (for protein). That's added to the entire pot, mind you. Also added garlic powder and salt. I served myself a little bowl. I'm 10 days out and just started on puréed yesterday. It's savory, which is a nice change from the sweetness of yogurt, protein shakes, cream of wheat, etc. The only caveat is that it makes me really thirsty, so it's hard to wait to drink water.
