I gained weight gradually. I was never thin like most of my family, but I wasn't obese like my grandmother had been. However, from being a little overweight in college, I gained 2 to 5 pounds a year until, I looked up at 48 and realized I weighed close to 300 pounds. My parents staged an "intervention". They took me aside and told me I was killing myself, total time, 15 seconds. My wife wouldn't criticize, but my kids were worried. So, I began to look into the surgery. At first, I thought a band would be for me. However, I had errosive esophagus so that was out. I got that healed over a year, but I was terrified of the surgery. However, I saw success in others with the Roux en Y and figured it was that, or diabetes and early death. I learned that my surgeon had never lost a patient and figured I could stand a few weeks away from my high pressure job at any rate. So I took the plunge.
Well, it's been 11 weeks and it was the best thing I ever did in sum. I do wish I could still gorge on pizza and chocolate sometimes. However, was it really worth it? A few seconds of pleasure against years of my life? Nope.
Anyway, if you are considering surgery, think it over. It isn't a picnic, I hate protein shakes and the bars are only a little better. However, once you fit into clothes three sizes smaller bought in a normal store, you will realize it was worth it.
