I went to my local GP andasked to be referred to a surgeon for the lap band.I then spent 2 years going to the hospital to see the medical doctor to resolve my weight issues using a non surgical solution. His advice included "don't eat biscuits" and "just eat what will fit into a cup". Needless to say these pearls of wisdom didn't fix my weight problem. So eventually I got to see the surgeon who decided I would be an excellent candidate for lap band surgery. I then had to wait eight weeks for financil approval from the NHS. Once this came through my surgery was booked!I had surgery on March 22nd 2010 as a day patient. I went to the hospital at 7am on a Monday morning. I put on my gown and lovely surgical stockings and waited for my turn. They took me into the operating theatre and asked me to get on to the bed. My surgeon prefers to put the patient out once they have got themselves comfortable on the operating table as it causes less problems afterwards. If you get yourself on the table there is less chance of injury by being lifted while unconscious. But it was a bit scary watching them get ready to cut me!!!I was soon drifting off and when I woke up the first thing I asked was "do I have the band?" This was because they had said that if you didn't stick to the pre op diet and shrink your liver they might not be able to do the operation. But YES I had a band. I was so happy. I went home the same day and was just a little tired and sore.I had to have three weeks off work which surprisingly I really needed. I was just so tired and the incisions took a bit of time to heal. But my journey had begun.
