I have been very happy with decaf post op. I do not want to return to caffeine in any form. It also stimulates appetite and dehydrates the body. The challenge for me is travel. In the US, we have many places that brew wonderful decaf coffees. But outside of the US, it is more challenging to find. So I take my own decaf instant coffee with me. I also make decaf at home using the cold-brew method. It makes delicious decaf.

I use Atkins protein bars for snacks. They are high protein, low calorie and low fat. The sugar alcohols in them do cause flatulence, however.

What ya eating tonight?
bakawaka replied to OleHippieGal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I often have egg-white omelette. Other times low-fat Greek yoghurt with protein powder and blueberries. Filet mignon is my favorite dinner, along with steamed green beans. -
Filet mignon remains my favorite. Surgeon advised me to avoid bread forever, if possible, because of high carbs. Thankfully I do not crave bread, but supposedly cravings will return 6 months to one year after surgery. I also find that beef is easier to eat than chicken. But I force myself to eat chicken occasionally simply for diversity.

this surgery is no joke
bakawaka replied to Lovebone89's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Here is how I view it. I have experienced a frivolous lawsuit and the pain of bariatric surgery. The pain of bariatric surgery, while real, was for me much less than the stress and pain of the lawsuit. Yes, it hurts. But in a few weeks it really will get better. Wishing you the greatest of success! -
I am four months post-op and steadily but slowly losing weight. I have read in several places that we can expect to lose 50% - 60% of our excess weight. The challenge with weight loss is clothes - when do you know you have reached a size where you will stay? I have read in the same literature that after we reach our lowest weight loss point, we regain 10% - 20% back. It is my understanding that initially we lose too much weight but our bodies find a way to find an optimal weight. Apparently we will lose weight for up to one year after surgery. And as time passes, it will slow down considerably, Is this your understanding as well? If you are more than one year post-op, do you find yourself continuing to lose weight? When could you stop buying new clothes? Should I keep some of my new post-op clothes in anticipation of a 10% - 20% regain? The reason I am asking is that every time I hit a plateau, I tho I, "ok, now I can buy new clothes." But a few weeks later I lose 5 more pounds. I have no choice but to buy new clothes because the old pants literally start to fall off when I walk. But that gets expensive. My shirts seem to work fine, though the collars are too big, but suits, jackets and pants have to be altered and/or replaced. Thanks in advance for any insight that anyone can offer. I wish everyone success in his or her weight-loss journey.

Post op 8 weeks help !
bakawaka replied to heather81's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My weight can fluctuate five pounds in a single day - it is from water and food. -
My back is killing me!
bakawaka replied to groovykg's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is completely normal. I had to prop myself up with six pillows on my bed for one week after surgery. Lying flat simply hurt. I was okay after about three weeks. The good news is that it truly does get better. -
I started eating filet mignon at 6 weeks out.

3-month post-op food cravings bread and cookoes
bakawaka posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For the first since since surgery (post-op 3 months) cookies ad bread were placed in front of me at a lunch and I craved them. I resisted them and ate an Atkins protein bar instead. But my brain kept telling me, "your stomach can handle bread and cookies." What is your experience post ? Do you ever eat bread or cookies? My surgeon's office recommends avoiding bread if possible because of the carbs. I agree, I am afraid that if I open the door to eating bread again, I will always eat it. -
Boild eggs remain dense and hard to eat but are definitely edible
bakawaka posted a topic in Food and Nutrition
I have to eat them slowly and then they seem to go down well for this 3-month post-op patient. What are your experiences with boiled eggs?. Does it make a difference if the eggs are hard boiled or soft boiled? I always eat the yolk for nutrition whether it is hard boiled or soft boiled. -
I find myself occasionally sleep eating - I now keep Atkins protein bars around to eat those instead of less healthful things. I woke up this morning and noticed that during the night I ate two Atkins bars. Not sure how I m going to solve this sleep eating issue.

3 weeks out & STARVING

I find that I can eat anything as long as it is chewed to purée consistency. -
I swear i feel hungry
bakawaka replied to pookybear's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It might be stomach acid. The burning feeling from the acid can mimic the feeling of hunger. I have found it helpful to drink something warm, such as decaf coffee or herbal tea, to reduce the feelings of hunger between meals. Hope this helps. -
I like beef and at three months post op find that filet mignon, when chewed thoroughly and eaten slowly, goes down very well and keeps me feeling full for an extended period of time. Here is my question: is it better to eat a filet that rare, medium, medium-well or well-done. My preference has been medium. I also find that I can eat an entire 6-ounce steak in 30 minutes as long as I eat nothing but the steak. I enjoy the flavor and feel satisfied. Is 6 ounces too much? Should I eat fewer ounces of steak but more ounces of something else, such as vegetables or fruit? I am not touching bread or rice. Is 6 ounces too much? I do feel full but do not feel on pain after eating.

confused about the malabsorption part?
bakawaka replied to Olivereindeer's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I find that I feel better when I take vitamins. The barometric vitamins are more expensive but I do think that they get absorbed more effectively than traditional vitamins. I take four optisource vitamins every day. What vitamins do you take? -
Surgery on Friday Feb 8th 2013
bakawaka replied to brandnewme's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
At three months post op I am eating about 2.5 cups of food per meal. The amount I can eat differs according to the density of the food and how well I chew it before swallowing. I worry that I can at too much, but I am continuing to lose weight. -
At three months out I am eating approximately 2 1/2 cups of food at each meal.

Able to eat more food 3 months post op
bakawaka posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am able to eat more food comfortably 3 months post op - it is a by scary. Of course, I cannot eat as much as I ate pre op, but I can eat much more now than 2 months post op. I can eat an entire steak 4-6 ounces) and some steamed vegetables but nothing else. Will the amount that I can eat continue to expand? Or will I always have restriction? -
I hope you feel better soon!

That Scale is the Devil! >_<
bakawaka replied to libra_lisa's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I lost no weight on a one-month pre-opliquid diet. All of my weight loss started two weeks after surgery. -
The drain tube was the worst part of the surgery for me.

We forget our surgery can be an inspiration
bakawaka replied to Lebim's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
One of my friends (obese) has made an appt with a surgeon after seeing my results. Two of my colleagues have started diets. So, yes, my surgery has in a sense become a possible motivating factor for them. -
These are great protein bars. I also like the Atkins bars.
