    All clear for surgery!

    I wish you great success! I am almost one year post op. I remember being very scared the day of surgery. I am grateful for the surgery.
  2. I was sore for several weeks - it was mainly the drain.
  3. I eat two Protein bars per day. Why? Because I do not like to cook and I like knowing portion sizes and calories in advance. I won't cook anything unless it can go in the microwave. I know that it is better to eat "real food" and I do so occasionally but life is too busy. But I am trying to eat more canned goods and frozen vegetables (convenient) and I am trying to learn how to cook more "real" food in a microwave. Another advantage I protein bars: no clean up

    Tailbone issues

    I developed a pressure ulcer due to the lack of padding. It takes a long time to heal. The issue is the lack of blood circulation when you sit. One strategy to mitigate is to be sure to shift your position a lot when you have to sit for a long time - shift your weight, etc. It also helps to stand up and walk to get the blood circulating. This is my experience.

    Recovery?

    I spent 5 nights and 6 days in the hospital. I had to keep a surgical drain in my for about one month. That was the most painful part of the entire experience. I was tired all the time for about three weeks. Slowly but surely that tiredness went away. At 9 months post-op I am still learning how to eat. My weight loss has probably stopped so I am learning about maintenance. I vomited a total of one time after surgery simply because of eating too fast. At no other time have I had a problem with eating. I wish you success on your weight loss journey.

    Feeling like a whimp

    My surgeon's office assigned me protein shakes from Bariatric Advantage that contain fiber. They were filling and controlled hunger. I did not lose a single pound on the one-month pre-op liquid diet, but it definitely shrunk my liver, which was the main goal. I wish you the greatest of success on your journey! I had surgery 9 months ago and am very glad that I did.

  8. I am 6 months post-op and still using chewable bariatric vitamins. I have the sense that they are superior to traditional multivitamins. My surgeon says that regular multivitamins are now okay to take. The bariatric vitamins are more expensive. But what are you taking? Are you using bariatric vitamins or regular multivitamins? My blood work shows excellent absorption of the bariatric vitamins. Would a regular multivitamin have less optimal absorption?

    Complications

    Do we need to stay on Prevacid and similar medications the rest of our lives post-surgery? I'm 7 months post op and taking a prescription version of Prevacid.
  10. I lost around 70 pounds in 7 months and considered it rapid weight loss. 60 pounds sounds great to me. It sounds like impressive progress. I have experienced many stalls - some lasted 4-5 weeks. I now lose about 1-2 pounds per month. I prefer to lose weight slowly at this point.

    Horror stories....

    Here is my experience: I had limited complications after surgery and had to stay in the hospital a few extra days plus keep that surgical drain in for about three weeks. In the 7 months since surgery I have vomited a total of ONE time. I have no regrets and would do it all over again if necessary. My biggest fear was not the surgery but maintaining weight post surgery. To me, weight regain would be the biggest complication. My weight loss is now very slow - 2 pounds per month. So I am entering the maintenance period and trying to apply what I have learned. I must say that pre surgery I was very nervous (it was my first surgery). But now I know that if I need surgery again (probably will need something taken out or adjusted), I will not be as fearful. Going through the surgery seemed like a rite of passage. In a strange way, I "grew" as a result of the surgery. Whatever your decision, I wish you and everyone else great success in the weight loss journey!

    Amount of food?

    I find that at 7 months post-op I am able to eat much more food than just 2 months post-op. I also find some cravings returning. I have lost about 70 pounds and have approximately 15 more pounds to lose to hit "goal weight." My concern is what will happen next year and the year after. All I know to do is to remain vigilant. I am trying to recognize "head hunger" versus true physical cravings. I do find that eating 5 smalls a day helps. There seems to be conflicting research on this. But I eat three meals a day and 2 Snacks in-between, trying to stay at around 1,000 calories per day. I do not measure food. But I do watch calories and focus on Proteins a high-fiber foods. Depending on what kind of food it is, I can eat a little or a lot. I can eat 3 boiled eggs for a meal. I can eat one entire chicken breast. But after that, no much else. I am male. Men typically eat more than women. I also find it disturbing that I can eat much faster than in the past. I also can consume more liquid more quickly than in the past. I've been cleared by the surgeon's office for limited amounts of caffeine, but I find that caffeine does truly stimulate my appetite. I now must deliberately focus on good habits, whereas right after surgery those good habits were imposed on me. I'm still learning. I remain very pleased with the results of the surgery. And I'm still wishing everyone the best of success.

    44 yr old male 1 1/2 yr Post Op

    I am 7 months post op an very concerned about falling into old habits. I find that while I am eating the right foods in the right quantities I am able to eat faster - and I am doing so. I can see how it would be easy to fall back into old habits and want to find a way to remain vigilant. I am able to eat more than in the past and find myself wanting to consume more food. I remain focuses on protein.

    What to eat for energy?

    Boiled eggs are great for breakfast. They are very convenient. You can make them in advance and store them in the refrigerator. If boiled eggs are too dense, try out egg white omelettes. They are easy to prepare. Another food I eat for breakfast when I am busy is protein bars.

    What are your portion sizes?

    At six months out sometimes I can eat a lot of food and other times very little. It fluctuates according to the type of food. Over time I am able to diversify foods - more vegetables and fruits after proteins. I find that I enjoy my food more than during pre op times. It is my I verified understanding that pre op cravings will return at some point (bread, sweets). Not sure how that will impact things.

    always hungry and eat chocolate

    I use atkins Protein bars for Snacks and meals. Never have tried the indulge Treats. But I have been very pleased with the snack bars and meal bars from atkins. I prefer the snack/meal bars over the indulge treats because they have higher protein. The Atkins bars have helped me with my sweet tooth and in keeping blood sugar stable. The only disadvantage that I koe of from the bars is that they can cause flatulence (farting). They have helped me manage my weight. I have two snack bars per day, one mid morning and one mid morning.m I buy the, from amazon because amazon offers greater variety. I hope that this info somehow is of help to you on your weight loss journey. It has helped mine. In any case, I wish you the greatest of success on your weight loss journey!

    My understanding is that we all regain some weight after we reach our lowest weight.

    What foods do you miss?

    I do not miss any specific foods but sometimes find myself missing the pleasures of a large meal. But I never want to go back to eating huge quantities of food. I feel so much better now eating smaller quantities.

  21. My loose skin is in my face, not on my abdomen. I have fat cheeks, new lines when I smile, and a line of skin hanging from my neck. I am a 49 year old man, is it too early for a facelift and necklift? Would I look like a space alien after getting one? Or should I just let the skin hang and shake however it wants to do so? Is recovery from a facelift and necklift painful? For those of you who have had one, are you glad you had it? Did you have any complications? How about scarring?

  23. I find Atkins bars and Shaklee Protein bars very helpful for business travel. They are low-carb, low-fat and low-calorie. They are full of Fiber. They keep blood sugar stable and control cravings. I use them during long flights of eight hours or more. Of course, I prefer real food, but with business travel, it is not always convenient. Downside of protein bars: flatulence. But they do control my hunger. I commute every other week between Europe and the US for work (one of the reasons I gained weight). Protein Bars have truly helped. I also know exactly the amount of my sodium intake. I cannot advocate protein bars for everyday use over real food. But I consider them superior to high-fat, high-sugar, high-carb processed food when on the road. For Breakfast in hotel buffets: I eat boiled eggs, smoked salmon and cheese.

    I find that I have less pain after losing weight. However I have increased pain in my knees after losing weight - not sure why.

    Negative feedback from family.

    Self-empowerment is intimidating to others. WLS is self-empowerment. as your self-empowerment grows, those round you whoever relationships with you here based on a perceived lack in your power will be threatened. some of the relationships evolve. Some must disappear.
