    weight/lift restriction

and at 2 wks my restriction was nothing over 20 lbs..... so many differences. I can see doctors wanting to be careful that you don't develop a hernia but the weight limits go from one extreme to another...... Should be more uniform!

    I need some help...

Heather, Any loss of weight is a good loss no matter how small. Be proud. Our weight loss is kind of like the saying "A watched pot never boils." Let's change it to "A weighed body, never loses!" Seems like the more we want it to happen the less it will. Thinking of you and sending hugs your way! It WILL be okay!

    Eating after Gastric Bypass

I don't really get hunger signals, I have to go by the clock and keep to a set timetable w/meals, vitamins, and protein. It's not that rigid depending on what's going on in the day, but without it, I just won't eat. Just not super hungry, yet. Congrats on your surgery, glad to hear that things are going well for you, but I would also advise you to measure portions and eat only that. Remember drinking with meals is not allowed either!

    Trying on clothes..

You will still have some surgery swelling going on. I had my surgery on 12/04/12 and I am just now noticing how much looser my clothes are becoming. I took measurements before surgery and just checked my measurements yesterday and lost two inches in all areas except for hips where I lost 4 inches. I would rather not step on the scale because too many things can interfere with weight day-to-day, and I don't need that stress. I am satisfied to feel health improvements and notice changes in other ways. Continued success to you, we are the masters of this terrific tool called surgery. Use it wisely and it won't disappoint. I have to avoid carbs because I was diabetic going into this and am no longer taking any diabetic meds now. Carbs will continue to wreak havoc on my overall success and so I avoid them. Can't wait to add fruits (my sugar of choice) to my diet and just recently started an exercise program..... Congrats, and keep your chin up, it will all fall into place, just stay to your program!

    So different!

Most people who have the sleep studies usually are getting clearance because of sleep apnea or are being checked to see if they have it.

Took me a few days, remember you have to have more than liquids in order to go and then it has to follow the route from one end to the other, LOL. I take half of a Fiber One chewable three times daily, starting a couple weeks after surgery. It seems to help and I go every day now, but always ask your doctor before you try anything new....

You win, my stomach was bruised but more horizontally and not as large of an area. Amazing, but yes it will fade. By the looks of it, could be a while. I still have incisions that are not fully closed, but bruising finally fading. You look marvelous! So glad you are healing well!

    The Scale!

I didn't own a scale until after Christmas, but I have managed to stay off of it. My main reason for having the surgery was for better health and the weight loss is the added bonus. Right now I am obsessing with the health. I notice so much every single day.....that is reward enough, for now!

I did read that book, Hippie and enjoyed it, very informative! They also have a numerous weightloss surgery cookbooks. I also enjoyed "Okay, I've gone through weight loss surgery, Now What Do I Do..... I love the information out there but I always use this forum for the information my mind needs! Security blanket! LOL Oh Yeah, and that bruise....had one just like yours, my doctor saw it and apologized. Asked him if something got stuck and he used his foot on my stomach for leverage to remove it.....he's got a great sense of humor, too!
  12. Last night I was feeling like I was going to pass out. No longer on diabetic medicines since surgery on 12/4. I checked my blood sugar and found that it was 46. Having had bypass, I was concerned about drinking anythiing with too much "sugar" so I tried some unsweetened applesauce. When that didn't seem to work, I ate a small piece of roast mashed up with broth, no relief......finally I decided to try a "cutie" but instead of swalling the segments I slowly chewed a few segments and spit them out rather than swallowing them. Well, shortly after, I got sick and vomited. Just once and no pain afterwards, but scared me. I guess, I need some advice for "if" that happens again. In the past, I would just drink a little bit of fruit juice but I was afraid this time it would make me sick....LOL I managed to do that in the end anyway! What a doofus! Taking it easy on food today. Pouch seems a little reluctant and grouchy!

    Protein post op

Metabolic Rate Changes A diet change to include higher Protein intake can also affect your metabolic rate. The reason behind this phenomenon lies in the chemistry behind protein metabolism. The process requires more Water, which can, in turn, lead to dehydration. Protein breakdown also increases the demand for oxygen. When you exercise vigorously, your body turns to carbs for energy because it is more efficient. The process requires oxygen. Excess protein consumption can deprive the body of the oxygen it needs to fuel activity, further impacting your athletic performance. Protein post op

I was eating food items a little sooner than I was suppose to. Wasn't having any problems. Only food that bothered me was cottage cheese and I don't know why...milk hasn't been a problem for me at all. So far, only that one bad experience. Caused dumping for me, was miserable all night and part of the next day. Won't be trying that again for a while. Instead of using bread i'll take a small piece of meat and use a small piece of lettuce and wrap is like a lettuce wrap. I am only careful with watching my carbs. Now that I know it doesn't take much to raise my glucose I need to be really mindful of what I'm eating. Love my protein shakes! Weird but I crave them.....

    Chewing and swallowing HELP

I am on soft foods and I find that smaller bites is really helpful. Too much food in your mouth makes it harder to keep track of it all. Been there done that. We were told not to but anything in your mouth bigger than a perncil eraser.....NOW, I KNOW WHY! Duh! Go slowly and take small bites.

    Pain after surgery.

I didn't have a lot of overall pain but really uncomfortable pain in the left upper rib cage. Doc said that is the area the stapler.cutter was at and it isn't unusual. Gas pain can continue for a while until it passes. overall by the end of the second week I finally felt pretty good. Overall I am a month out now and don't have anymore abdominal surgery(incision) discomfort. Getting more use to the new way of eating and learning how to chew, chew, chew!

For those of you who might be interested there are a couple books you can buy or get for your kindle through Amazon. One is called Mindful Eating by Jan Chozen Bays, MD and the other one is Never Goin' Back by Al Roker from the Today Show (he had gastric bypass, too!) I got them both on my Kindle and hope to start reading this weekend. Check them out! Tell me what you think---but if you read them don't give away the storyline!

I definitely DON'T have permission to eat anything I want, my sugar DOES increase according to the carb amount. Having the surgery was NOT my free pass. Now, I am finally getting that message. Yikes!

I also had to have one shot of insulin in the hospital during the night of my surgery date (4th). Sugar came down and has since stayed within the 80's and 90's so I haven't taken any diabetic meds. Pre-surgery I was taking 1000 mg of Janumet 2x daily. They told me to test 4 times a day post-surgery (which I haven't been doing), although I do test..just not as often. I've had two episodes of hypoglycemia but realize now that my ingested carbs might have been too high which later caused the sudden drop. Obviously, something I ingested was a little too high in carbs. So I am now being more diligent. There was a history of reactive hypoglycemia that preceded my diabetes. Guess it will revert back to that if I'm not careful. So are you to take your medicine regardless of your glucose levels? Seems to me like you should only take it if your glucose is staying elevated. I'm sure either way it won't be much too long that you will needing any of the diabetic meds. Glad to know you are doing well. Your recovery seems to be going well, so far! Thoughts are with you!

I guess we all need to be more careful about how we are feeling and what current medications we take. Having too much medication on board can certainly wreak havoc on our recovery and have nothing to do with the actual surgery . Hmmmm...more to think about! It doesn't take a lot of weight loss for medications to be decreased.
