Anyone Else Doing This 'alone' In One Way Or Another?
stellar313 replied to worm2872's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did all my preop appointments, tests, and classes by myself - except the EGD, which my husband came. My husband and dad were there the day of surgery, my husband took the day of surgery, the day after, and my first day home off work. I had a couple friends visit at the hospital. My mom passed away almost 2 years ago, she was obese and had many issues from it. Spent her last 3mos in hospitals and nursing home. She made me promise to not end up like her. So I think she was there with me too, she was always my biggest support and confidant, so this whole process just makes me miss her more! -
Post Surgical Pain
stellar313 replied to shrinkinmama's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My main incision was still painful at a week and had a lump that was growing. I checked with my doctor and they said to let them know if it became red, and of course the next day it was. Had to have it reopened. -
Seminar Before Surgery?
stellar313 replied to wonderwoman75's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went to my seminar in April, first visit with the surgeon in June, surgery Oct 1st. A lot will depend on your surgeon and your insurance requirements. My insurance only required 3 months supervised weight loss. -
Chest And Back Pain

Definitely stop taking Ibuprofen. No NSAIDS after surgery. They are hard on your stomache and can lead to ulcerations in your pouch. -
How Long Did You Take Off From Work ?
stellar313 replied to destineex33's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm taking 6 weeks. I'm a nurse in a hospital and do patient care. I have an incision that was infected and I had to keep it open to drain. It is just now starting to close and I am at 4 weeks. I really want it healed before I go back to germ-land! The job is physically demanding too, but I think I would be ok at this point if not for the pain of the incision. -

To Tell Or Not To Tell
stellar313 replied to USAFmom2's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was lucky because one of my coworkers had the surgery 2 years ago. She was very open about her surgery and everyone was very supportive, so I knew I would also get support at work. -

Everything is going ok except for the incision. Hopefully it will heal soon. My surgery was Oct 1st. Have started soft foods this last week, eager to progress to more variety. Good luck to everyone with November dates!

My drain was removed before I left the hospital, but I have a friend who went home with 2 for a week - that was normal postop for her surgeon. I do have an incision that got infected, it's been a pain. My surgeon had to reopen it a week after my surgery and I've had to keep it open by packing it so it can drain. It's been open for 2 weeks. I think this is a minor complication, more frustrating than anything.

I wanted the VSG, but changed to the RNY due to my EGD results also. I went through the roller coaster of emotions too. Not sure how to avoid that!

I am in Green, Ohio (near Akron). Had my surgery 10/1/12 at Akron General.

Need Info About Post Op Life
stellar313 replied to makemyownluck's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know exactly how you feel! I was so excited about a VSG and went through my preop prep intending to get that. At my doc visit 2 weeks before surgery he said that my EGD showed Barrett's Esophagus, which is a sign of chronic GERD (which can increase with the VSG). He said I could get the VSG and he could convert to the RNY later if I continued to have GERD, but I really didn't want to have 2 surgeries. I had the RNY on 10/1. I had a horrible couple days of trying to decide, I really didn't want to switch. I am ok with the decision now, I also worry about dumping syndrome, I guess we'll see how it goes. And I also have a lot of weight to lose, so I think this will be better for me in the end. I take bariatric vitamins, so take a multi vitamin and calcium (B12 is in the bariatric multivitamin). Good luck!
