i think it depends on your surgeon as well as your insurance. My insurance did not require, nor did my surgeon that i undergo a sleep study. The question i would have is, are they having you do this before they submit to approval for your insurance. If the answer to that question is yes than i can tell you why they are doing it =). It is likely so that they can add sleep apnea to your list of complications associated with being obese. This isnt a bad thing in fact this can help sway the board one way or the other. Pre-Op tests vary slightly depending on your hospital and surgeon. Usually you will have an ECG, blood draw and nutritional consult. This is very standard and nothing to worry about. Some doc's like mine also test of H. Pylori. This can cause issues if it were to flare post op so usually they treat it right away with antibiotics. Hope this helps!!!

There are several ways of telling if your dehydrated. Fatigue, dizziness, confusion. The big way to tell is something called skin tenting. This is when u pinch skin say on the back of your hand and observe for the skin to stay pinched in a tent look. -
Being nervous is natural, the biggest thin you can do to help with the cold feet is educate yourself! Read here ad check out some of coggins links. He foud some great videos and articles. The liquid diet before depends on your surgeon. Mine yelled a me because I am on a 1600 calorie high Protein diet before not a mostly liquid only. The best thing you can do is find a protein mic u like NOW. Excess protein will help release glycogen stores in your liver, this will help shrink it for surgery. Remember that u need 60g give or take depending on your dr. I use optimum whey protein from GNC or bodybuilding .com and the mocha Cappuccino is amazing!!! It has 24g protein and I mix it with 2 cups of slim milk so I get an extra 16 ish from that. So 2 of those and your golden! Being scared is good, it's a natural response and it means that your seriouse and that you appreciate the gravity of the change. Try to relax and remember, life is what your choosing. Welcome to the journey.

Outch, sorry to hear that! I already told my partner at work that if I get dehydrated he is coming over to give me an iV. Lol -
vanna, Are you putting it on an area that has lotion? Sometimes the soap has moisterizers that can leave a film and make it hard for Patches to stay on. You should be able to chose multiple sites of patch application, i would consult the manufacturer info and see if another site works for you.

there is no test that will be done to see if you have been smoking. They go off your word. Obviously you have been doing great thus far, just be carefull to not have any more. =) Stop stressing though, if you hang out with smokers you get 10 x more toxins just breathing off the other end than you got out of those 2. Stay strong though!!! Hope this helps =)

kristaroberts, Allot of the issues with becoming pregnant after weight loss surgery, or rather immediatly after have everything to do with nutrition and stress. The issue is that you are already desperatly trying to learn how to just get enough nutrition for you let alone a baby. Also you have to think about the added stress that being pregnant puts on a normal healthy person and then imagine that on a body that has just undergone WLS. Getting pregnant soon after weight loss has a risk of several complications. I would advise you to speak to your bariatric dr as well as your nutritionist on this. Basically what i have read in some of my research is that it has happened and you can be successfull, however, the issue is that "can be". The risk vs reward is not there. That is the risk outweighs the reward. I wont go into detail but if you do some research you will find allot of issues can develop and most are in relation to the normal growth of a healthy fetus in relation to the nutritional issues that can develop. Its not the end of the world if it happens, but you will have a heck of time with the nutritional requirements. Obviously the further out the better, or at least after the majority of the rapid weight loss is done "says 2 bariatric surg. i found online info from." Great question!! Ps i'm not a lady but wanted to add my 2 cents sorry =(

Hi All! 3 More Days! Teeth Chattering!
dstollery replied to cutiepieme's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Pain management is important for healing. That being said there are allot of options to help manage it. If one isn't working how u like then ask for a different option. In the hospital morphine, dilaudid and fentanyl are big ones. Don't be afraid to ask for a different one. Typically if your having sleep apnea in relation to the pain med your snowed. What I mean is your likely getting too much and it's suppressing your resp drive. Lower the dose or ask for something else because whatever your on your taking too much an it's dropping your resp drive. Pain is a symptom it should be treated and managed. Advocate for yourself! -

So I've Been Thinking...
dstollery replied to Kellyk2511's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
They should have a form for you to fill out as well saying what diet plans you have tried and when as well as loss and gain. At least my hospital had me do that to prove what I had been doing. Also when you talk to your physician about weight it's dictated that you talked about it. Might be a prob if they want meal plans, nutritionist visits, dr weigh ins etc. -
Special K Protein Shakes?
dstollery replied to Sparklette's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have not and still pre op but the reward for the calories doesn't seem that great. My Protein shakes have around 28g protein with only 100 cal and 2 carbs. Might be a good treat though -
That is awsome!!! How's your preop diet going

DLCoggin makes a great bunch of points. In the medical field I make risk vs reward decisions for patients every day and so I always look at things in those terms. I don't know your medical hx or issues but I can tell you that DLCoggin is right about the studies. The benefits for most FAR outweigh the risks. Just the CAD disease drop is worth a huge weight on scale but throw in diabetics and the renal issue and you threw a Mac truck on that scale. I'm not even talking ADL stuff like mobility. If you sit down and write it all out with mom I am confident that with a little research not only will she be ok with the surgery but happy that your removing co-morbid factors from your life!!! Great post coggin
