  1. Just came back from having a kidney stone removed and the doctor told me something interesting that I wanted to pass on. I asked him about how to avoid stones in the past and he said ice tea. He said ice tea could cause a relapse in the stone. My rny doctor recommended ice tea to replace soft drinks for the caffeine properties. I have had my fair share of ice tea in the last couple years. I then asked him what can I drink other than water and he said lemonade.

Do you have a theme song for your journey?

Right now one of my favorites is Love the life you Live - Rod Stewart! The lyric is Love the life you live and live the life you love.
  3. Congrats on the success!! As for the gym - try and find a sport you enjoy, or a class. I know many people love Zumba. I choose to play soccer. I play about 4-5 times a week. Make working out fun. Set goals for yourself and try to beat them sooner than you had planned. It is all in how you look at it and what you enjoy doing. I will add though when I was going to the gym on a regular basis training for a PT test my skin did not sag (mainly my arms) as much as it does right now.

    Smells

It does go away for the most part. I only have it occasionally happen to me now. It took about 3-4 months for it to go away after surgery though. Along with smells you will find that things also taste different. Foods you used to hate you may actually crave and love them.

    Kidney stone warning

While I understand where you coming from please understand that I NEVER want to go through the pain of a kidney stone again. I spoke to my doctor again today during my follow up appointment and he said the key to ensuring that I do not get another stone is drinking plenty of water. However he also said to stay away from food high in calcium oxalate. Ice tea is one of those foods. Since my bypass I have increased my consumption of ice tea and although I do not believe that it is the only reason I got a stone I do believe it contributed to it. He also said that Citric acid found in lemonade is good for the kidneys and can be a substitute for water. He said I should drink enough water to make 2.5L of urine a day. Kidney stone is not something I would wish on my enemies. It is extremely painful and I hope to never go through it again.

    Lost hope

After reading your post I have several points to make:1. Sounds like you have hit your first major stall. It happens to all of us! Good news is that you should start to notice your clothes fitting better as we tend to loose inches during the stalls. The best thing to break a stall is to increase Protein and give it time. Your body will adjust and start losing again. 2. Losing hair means you are not getting in your protein. Hair loss is about 3 weeks behind your current intake. Meaning increasing your protein today will take about 3 weeks for your hair to catch up. Protein is vital to our success. It gives us energy, and helps the body heal. It has to be your number one priority now. Your doctor should have given you a minimum amount needed daily and you really need to follow that. Your best bet is to log your food. By logging your food you will be able to track how much protein you are getting. 3. As for your kiddos being picky eaters, I don't have good ideas. I don't have kids, so I don't think I would have good advise. 4. As for the boyfriend I would say you need to have a long conversation. Communication is the key to a happy relationship. My husband is naturally skinny as well, but we talked a lot about this pre and post op. While he may never know what being overweight feels like he needs to support you. I would approach it as you two can get healthy together. Communication has to be open and honest. Not sure how long you have to been together, but without open honest communication you will not be happy. You really need a good support system, and he needs to understand what you need from him. 4. Working out can be hard with kids, work and life in general. So start out slow and work your way up. Make goals and cross them off when you reach them. For example: tomorrow you will walk a block and a half. Don't get discouraged. Focus on your long term goals and everything will fall into place.

    Texas?

Hi Ava. Who will be doing your surgery?
  8. I just got out of my rny doctors office. I waited an 1 1/2 to see the nurse practitioner (I have never met her). I even requested to see my doctor. The reason for my visit was pain in my stomach and diarrhea. I have had diarrhea since I had the surgery 6 months ago. She told me to stop eating carbs, order something off amazon for the bad smelling gas, and take acid blockers for the stomach pain. Now what I am so upset about is that how can carbs be my problem if I have had the diarrhea since surgery. I told her I have changed around what I eat. Cutting out milk and other items and I still have the horrible gas and diarrhea. She told me to give it another month. I can't handle this or another month. I am too embarrassed to use the restroom at work because of the smell. My doc told me right after the surgery it could be c diff as the cause and when I asked the nurse practitioner about that she said there was no way it could be that. Well I have been on a lot of antibiotics the past 6 months and truly believe it could be my problem. I am sorry this is so long, but I know some of you would understand. Thanks for reading.
  9. I would suggest leaving your iPad at home. I was either asleep, or walking. As for the gasx they should be giving that to you in the hospital and may not allow you to take your own. I would add your own pillow if you are particular about that. Good luck

    Running too Slow

Make sure you have really good shoes. My speed picked up when I got the proper foot attire. Go to a running store and have them analyze your foot to get the proper shoes
  11. Apparently my weight loss has made me look younger. I have been carded four times in the last week. The funniest being a security officer who thought I was under 17. I am 34 and it is funny to see the peoples faces when they see my age. I am however a little worried someone is going to think I have a fake ID.

Specific friend advice needed! Pic included

Maybe the reason she has not said anything is that it will "change" the relationship. We all have roles in our relationships. I tend to be the wise cracker and make people laugh. I have a friend who is the drama Queen. I have a friend who is the sensitive one. Maybe deep down she is scared you are changing and therefore your friendship will change. Truth is you are changing. Inside and out! My suggestion is before you go shopping go out for coffee and tell her something is bugging you. Be open and honest with her. If she is the friend that you say she is then honesty is the best approach.
  15. I got them at a local max muscle store. They partner with my surgeons office. However you can also buy them online at https://www.eggwhitesint.com
  16. Also was told absolutely no store bought Protein shakes or bars. Too many calories. They did give me a couple pages of high protein low fat smoothies you make on your own. My doc said they way to tell if a protein drink/shake is look at the calories. There are 4 calories to every gram of protein. So a 10g protein drink should only have 40 calories for protein. If the drink has 300 calories you know there is a lot of added stuff.

    Gym Journey

Go slow and listen to your body. If something hurts don't continue. Expect some soreness the next day that is just your body rebuilding itself. Also if you have questions about a machine ask the staff. Finally most gyms have a free session with a trainer. Use it and ask lots of questions.
  19. During these times I found that thinking of your brain as a 2 year old really helps. A 2 year old wants what it wants and wants it right now. During this process you have been disciplined, determined, and strong. Your brain naturally wants to go back to feeling good. It wants the junk food as it made it happy. So when the going got rough in the past your brain would put up road blocks and you would crumble. Think back to your first stall - didn't you doubt yourself and your success? In the past that is when most of us gave up. I am starving myself for nothing I am not even losing weight now. I might as well have that cheeseburger. That was all your brain and you have in to him every time. Now his trick is getting you to doubt your success at this. The trick is to learn his tricks. Trust me this is not an easy task to master. At 1.5 years post op I still struggle with my two year old. You can be stronger than the 2 year old!

    Texas?

It is a place called max muscle. They partner with dr barker. The closet one to their office is in Plano. Just take what you will be mixing with the shake. I took lactose free milk with me.
  21. My doc said you can never get too much protein after wls. Keep in kind that protein is need for so much in our bodies. If you workout a lot you need more than someone who does not. I shoot for 104g daily on non workout days. On the days I play soccer I shoot for 130g. I need that extra protein to help fuel my body during games. I do not drink shakes anymore - I hate the taste of most of them. I use double pasteurized egg whites in my drinks. I can take a sports drink and turn it into a 30g protein drink quickly. I do not taste any difference, but some people are put off by the idea. Main thing is that you buy egg white that are meant to be ingested raw. Do not buy the carton at the grocery store.

    Spousal support

Honestly I would not say this is due to the hormone issues. You are grieving two losses right now. Of course you are a hot mess!!! My husband was such a big supporter of me, and felt bad for eating in front of me. However we had some bumpy times during the beginning. Before the surgery we talked about him always brining bad stuff home when I was trying to eat better. He said he would not do that after surgery. Well guess what he brought home a chocolate cream pie about 3 weeks post op. He told me he got it for me because he knew I could not have solids yet. We normally handled this by me getting mad and staying in the bedroom, but I knew we had to do something different because I was not going to fail at this. So we talked, and he said he did not even really think about it. He said he wanted sweets still in the evening. Our compromise was that he would bring home things I would never want. I hate coconut cream pie, and that is what my husband began buying. My point in telling you this - sit down and talk with your hubby. Tell him your feelings and allow him to tell you his. This is an emotional time for the entire family. Communication is the key!!! You can get through this.

    Goals

I would caution everyone to measuring your success by the number on the scale, and setting your goals based on numbers. I am 1.5 out from surgery and have been on the boards for the entire time. I have read so many posts about people getting really discouraged because they did not hit that number on the scale. While the numbers are a big part of this journey - try to set goals that are non scale victories. For example my first NSV was eliminating a certain medication I am on. I have reduced it, but have not gotten rid of it. I sat down and made a list of the things I wanted to achieve after surgery, and I am much happier than when I stared at the scale willing it to go down another 2 pounds. Congrats on the reaching the goals you have set for the scales!!

    Cortisone shots

I am on daily prednisone due to rheumatoid arthritis and have been for about 6-7 years. I have had no issues. I have received shots in the side of my hip and in the joint space since the surgery. Again no issues. Just talk with both doctors about it.
