Need quick advice..banded 4/10/08
lafevretj replied to woodbox20's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I actually progressed to pureed the morning after my surgery. They brought me oatmeal for breakfast on my breakfast tray. I was discharged that morning and have either cream of wheat or oatmeal daily for breakfast with no problems. -
In recovery my mouth was so dry I could hardly talk. First they leg me have a mouth swab with a little water, then ice chips and by the time I got to my room they let me have sips of water. That evening at supper, I had broth and watered down apple juice.
-
My EKG was also abnormal. I was scheduled for a stress test and it was normal, so my surgery progressed without any problems.

No pre-op diet or fast for me. My BMI was 40 and weight 230, my surgeon said it wasn't necessary in my case. -

How quick were you able to start Mushy Food?
lafevretj replied to JayJay's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My surgeon explained that it varies for each individual. I was doing fine with the liquids the 1st 24hrs so they progressed me to pureed before leaving the hospital (if you have to chew it, it isn't pureed). I will remain with the pureed until my 1st follow-up visit on 4/22 (I was banded on 4/2). I'm doing fine with the pureed, but will wait until my surgeon okays progressing to the level III diet. If you are really hungry and think you may cheat, just give your surgeon a call, he should be able to let you know if you could progress earlier. -
I was banded on 4/2 and started walking last evening (1 mile) then (2 miles) tonight. Still having some port site discomfort, but only needed pain med twice today. I won't go back to work until the 23rd. Since I am unable to work with any weight restrictions (I'm a nurse), my surgeon won't lift my 10# weight restriction for at least 3 weeks. So far I have lost 12# with absolutely no hunger!!! I did have cravings tonight when my husband was grilling hamburgers, I asked for a small piece of one, chewed it and spit it out just to have the flavor. That actually satisfied my craving.

not enough? 300 or less a day
lafevretj replied to Bunkey1965's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
How much of the creamy potato soup did you eat? I was banded on 4/2 and was able to eat about 1/3 cup of the soup. I usually know I am getting full because I will start having pain in my left shoulder. Otherwise I don't have any problems with anything, I do drink the liquids slowly though. -

Gas leak! Did this happen to you?

I had my surgery on 4/2. I have had some burping but have really had more gas......probably from the stool softener. -
6 days post op and weak and lightheaded...
lafevretj replied to sophiekitty's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded on 4/2, had clear liquids the 1st 24 hr and was progressed to the step II diet my 2nd day post-op. I can have cream of wheat, cream soups, yogurt or anything pureed (as long as you don't have to chew it it is alright). Sometimes I only have 1/4 cup at a meal, but I really feel full. No problems getting in all of the liquids or protein. -
I had my surgery on 4/2. I am doing pretty good as long as I keep my pain medication on about an every 6hr schedule. The discomfort when getting in and out of the chair or bed is decreasing daily, mainly feel this over my port site. The diet is going great, the first few days I couldn't eat over a couple of table spoons of anything, now I can eat 1/4-1/3 cu. at my meals. I have been having several small meals and haven't had any problem getting in all of my protein. I have been adding beneprotein to my crystal light and coffee and also as a protein booster to my slimfast shakes. I am actually starting to have an appetite and really like the sugarfree fudgesicles. My kids made a roast with potatoes and carrots yesterday, I blended it up and it tasted pretty good (just didn't look very appetizing). I think things are going much better than I anticipated!! Good luck to you all!!

I had one shot of heparin right before my surgery and received lovenox right before being discharged from the hospital.

What kind of band do you have?
lafevretj replied to TxChelsey's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded on 4/2 and have the AP band. It is the only band that my surgeon uses. -
I was banded on 4/2 and have also found my BP has been higher than usual. I think it may be related to the percocet.

It's 6:00 a.m., I have to be at the hospital at 8:00 a.m. (about 1 1/2 hr drive). My surgery is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.. Just found out yesterday that my insurance didn't approve my overnight stay, so I may be coming home today. I am excited, nervous, scared (I guess that about sums it up). Can't wait to start my new journey!! Good luck to everyone!!

I'm getting banded on 4/2 in Columbus Ohio, at OSU.

I am being banded on April 2nd at OSU after 10 months of waiting. I can't believe it is finally going to happen!!! My surgeon doesn't require a pre-op diet, I just have to eat lightly the day before and be NPO after midnight the night before surgery. I just found out my surgery date on the 25th and have been making sure to get everything I need before the big day. My husband left for China this morning (work related) and won't be home for my surgery, but my daughters are going to be with me and stay with me for a few days. Hubby wasn't to happy I went ahead and let them schedule me when he wasn't going to be here, but I told him I have waited 10 months and I'm not going to wait a day longer than I have to.

From 1st Consult to Surgery - how long?
lafevretj replied to KMEArnold's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I feel exactly the same way regarding the six month supervised weight loss. I completed mine in december followed by four weeks of dietician counseling regarding my diet following lapband surgery. I have been approved by my insurance company and am waiting for my consult date with my surgeon at the end of the month. My surgery will probably be scheduled in mid to late april. Since I started the process in June of '07 I will have waited a total of ten months. I wouldn't want to do it any differently. I used every bit of the time to educate myself regarding the lapband and to make sure I could make the changes that would be required to be successful. -
How many of you had a surgery date before ins. approval?
lafevretj replied to mommakatx2's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I completed my 6month weight loss program in december, received my insurance approval in february and am scheduled for my consult with my surgeon the end of march to schedule surgery. -
I submitted reciepts and weight loss information from my health club, richard simmons on-line, weight watchers, nutrisystem, e-diets and curves. None of this helped to reduce the 6 month physician supervised weight loss program that Ohio med requires. I assume they didn't accept these since these weight loss efforts weren't supervised by a physician. Ohio med requires a BMI of 40 or 35 with at least two co-morbidities. I just met their requirements with a BMI of 40. I attended a pre-bariatric program at my local hospital, two back to back 12 week sessions that included a dietician, exercise physiologist and cardiac nurse. I also saw my GP monthly for weigh in and there were specific guidelines for what they needed to include in their progress notes. The time really passed fast and I finally have an appt. with my surgeon on 3/25 to set my surgery date. Don't let the 6 month wait intimidate you, the time will fly by!!

Pre-banding Feed Frenzy....
lafevretj replied to HarleyGirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Now I don't feel alone! I am approved for my surgery and have an appt. with my surgeon scheduled for 3/25 (hopefully surgery scheduled in April). I have been eating everything!! I have actually gained 10# since completing my 6month diet. I was beginning to doubt myself........but it sounds like this is not an "uncommon" reaction. -
I have ohio med and had to do the 6 month weight loss program. I started june and completed my program in december. My case then had to have a final review before the bariatric surgery committee at OSU and was approved by them on 1/22. They didn't send the information requesting approval for the lapband to my insurance company until 2/6. As I was waiting for insurance approval I had to have four weeks of dietary counseling for the diet I will be following after surgery. I got my insurance approval on 2/21 and finished my dietary counseling on 2/22. Then I had to wait for OSU to schedule me to see a surgeon. I was just notified this morning that my appt. is 3/25. From what I understand they usually schedule surgery 2-4 weeks following the surgeons appt. It has been a really long wait, but I think it will be worth it in the long run. I have had alot of time to read about the band and educate myself for what is to come. I felt very fortunate that I got approved the first time around. Good luck with your journey, believe me, time really flies and 6 months will pass before you know it.

I completed my 6 month diet in december, I am currently having my four weeks of dietary counseling before lapband surgery. I haven't found out if my insurance has approved the procedure yet, but I should know in a week. I started the process last June, had my psycological eval., dietician consult, lab, Stress test, sleep study and EGD during the time I was on the 6 month diet. So far the process has been 8 months and my surgery (if approved by the insurance company), may not be for another month. The time has gone by so fast (and I have learned so much more than I knew when I started). I think the wait was definitely beneficial when I read posts from people who recently had surgery and really don't understand how the band functions, or didn't know what to expect after surgery. The best advice I can give you is to "educate" yourself regarding the band, during your wait. I know that I won't really know what it's all about until I have the surgery and "experience" it all first hand. Good luck!!

I was wondering if anyone has been banded at OSU by Dr. Needleman, or had any experience with the OSU bariatric surgery team. I am currently in my 5th month of my physician supervised weight loss program. I have undergone all of the pre-op testing and just need to complete my weightloss program and send everything in to my insurance company for approval. My BMI when I started was 40, now it is 38. I have spoken with the program coordinator at OSU and they said that is fine because the weight submitted is your initial weight, plus I could actually have a BMI of 35 and gain approval because I have a few co-morbidities. I am 48, married with three children. I am a registered nurse and one of my fellow nurses had her surgery at OSU. Her experience was good, but she is the only one I know who has gone there. Any input is appreciated!!
