  1. I had my surgery on 4/9/12, I was originally going to go for the lapband but when I went for my first consult, my surgeon said you lose more weight with the RNY so I chose the RYN.... I really wanted the best bang for the buck (even thought ins. paid). If you follow your surgeons directions exactly you should have no problems. I was back to work in 1 week and had no problems what so ever.

Five and a half months post op

You have really done a fantastic job... 109 lbs is awesome !!!! When you start to exercise the weight comes off and you get toned, your clothes fit better too !!!
  3. Hey Music .... I too was at a stall for 2+months.... it was 5 months post op when my weight loss just stopped. After the 2nd month I increased the intensity and distance of my exercise... I went from walking to running and in about 2 wks the weight started coming off again but slowly. The strange thing was.. the weight stayed the same but I dropped a size - go figure. I get about 50+ grams of Protein a day from a Protein shake the "+" is cottage cheese or nuts I may have. How are you getting all your protein in? I just may up mine and see what happens.

    Elective to Mandatory.

Wow... what a story !!! Your spine surgeon is truly a dedicated doctor, he really helped you and went beyond his scope of medicine. You are really lucky to have such a wonderful surgeon. Good luck with your RNY .... I know it is the best thing I ever did for myself !!!

    1.5 months post op

Yes, I am 9 months post op and I can eat a little more than a few months post op. I still get really full really quick. Just pay attention to what your stomack (pouch) is telling you. I stop when I first start to feel full, pre-surgery I would still continue to eat until I was ready to burst !!! I can't do that now, I listen to my stomach !!!
  6. Seeeeee, you have more will power than you thought !!! After surgery you are not going to even look at food - I promise !!!. Even the smell of food made me retch !!!!Of course that all passes with time. This surgery was the best thing I ever done for myself !!! Good luck
  7. Wow I have never heard of that !! I did not have to do any diet what so ever before surgery. I only had to do the usual before surgery, nothing to eat after 12 midnight and the day before surgery I had to eat light and take a laxative at 6 pm. Surgery was at 7 a.m. so I was not bothered by not being able to eat or drink. Good luck with your surgery, please keep us posted

Protein Shake Recipes, I need help!

I'm not a big fan of the Protein shakes either but I drink mine every single day as instructed. I use Isopure Dutch Cholocate. I use about 3/4 cup of Water and two scoops of the powder (50 grams of protein). Since I only use 3/4 cup of water I have very little to drink and I just down it. I take as big of a gulp as I can, I usually do this after I work out in the a.m. the protein helps you recover from exercising and it gives me a bost in the a.m. I heard there is unflavord protein that you can mix in your food without changing the taste.
  9. If your pouch feels empty I would eat a few crackers or something light and low in calories and fat. Since we fill up quick it will only take a little bit of food.

    Flying

I will be flying to florida in April and that is my one year annivarsary for RNY surgery. I don't see a problem with flying but I would check with your surgeon.

    What surprised you?

That dam drainage tube !!! I knew it hurt because my Mom had one in after she had surgery on her lung. I was standing right next to her when the dr. pulled it out and she screamed so loud and my Mom could take a lot of pain too. So when the dr. told me he was going to take it out I was totally prepaired for it and it hurt like hell. But it was only for a few seconds. I was surprised as how fast I recovered from surgery I was back to work in a week.

    Stall

When I was in my two month stall the scale did not move but I dropped a size... that I think kept me on track !! Stalls are difficult just stick to your plan and get that exercise in !!!

    Stall

Everyone is different, I had a 2 month stall, I am 9 months post op. My stall was 5 months post op. If you are following your sugeons instructions then the weight will start coming off just stick to your eating plan, and the weight will start coming off. I increased my exercise from walking to jogging and increased from a 45 minute workout to a hour workout and that got me out of my stall.

    Help! Insurance Question

Once your surgeon submits everything to the ins. company, its just a waiting game after that. Mine was submitted on a Monday and I was called on that thrusday that it was approved.

    Loose Bowels?

I had issues with lose bowels, I am finding out it was due to eating yogurt and cottage cheese. The combination of those two were awful for me, I went thru about 3 months of being afraid to eat breakfast during work because I did not want to be running to the bathroom all morning. I did process of elimination, now everything is fine.

    4 days post op

I had no problems getting my protein in and for the most part I got my fluids in too !! As long as you get your protein and fluids in you should be OK. My surgeon required me to get 64 grams of protein and 64 oz. of water daily. I always sipped, sipped, sipped all day/night. It would take me all day/night to get the fluids in but i did it. Consider youself lucky that you can get the required amount in, you will feel better quicker and get back to normal. I was back to work in one week I followed my surgeons instructions exactly and had no problems what so ever.

    Drinking Alcohol....

I had a glass of wine about 3 months post op. with no side effects what so ever. I do not get drunk or buzzed any faster than before surgery. I like to have my glass of red wine at night becuase it is very healthy for you. Everyone is different and handles alcohol differently, I tolerate the alochol the same as before surgery. You just need to know that alcohol has empty calories so drink in moderation. My surgeons office said that you would get durnk quicker and to be very careful which I was when I first had a glass of wine. If you do have a drink I would make sure you are home, eat first, and see what your reaction is becaue you don't want to be out and get sick or really drunk. Do some testing at home first.
  19. My evaluation was about 2 hrs. , they asked all kinds of questions about what your expectations of the surgery is. They also wanted to see that I knew the surgery was a tool and that I had to work with the surgery to lose weight and that the surgery was not a magic tool to lose weight, but that I had to work with it. They also wanted to know that it was me who wanted the surgery and that there was no husband/boyfriend wanting me to get the surgery and that it was me and only me who wanted the surgery. She expained that she had quite a few people come in that their spouses wanted them to have surgery and one mother and son where the mother called the son fat and lazy and wanted him to have the surgery, he was like 16. She said she always declines people that are there from someone else and not them selves.

    a little embarrassed

Im 9 months post op, I have/had issues too !! I had my gallbladder removed 10 wks after my RNY surgery. I would spend lots of time in the bathroom, it was awful, I would be at work and I would not eat breakfast if I had a meeting or conference call because I knew I would be running to the bathroom. I went to my dr. and he said it could be the dairy (cottage cheese or yogurt) I was eating for breakfast.... I finally have stopped the running to the bathroom = yeah. I am not eating as much cottage cheese or yogurt and everything is OK now. I do have cottage cheese because I love it and it is high in protein but I don't eat it every day and that seems to help. I think your body just has to adjust to the drastic change in eating habits.

    Just weak

Totally normal feelings and Worm above is so right, your body has just had major surgery, it takes time to heal and feel good. Keep up the protein, fluids and food as much as you can. It will pass, get plenty of rest and walk, walk, walk... it will get your strength back.

    3 days post op

Believe me it all passes, and each day gets better. I constantly walked, it helps with the gas and the quicker you get up and about the quicker your recovery time is. Congrats and you will feel better soon - I promise

    Randomness

We all go thru it but it is all totally worth it. And what that person said to you was totally rude !!!! and I know how you feel, I have also been asked "when are you due" !!! It hurts but just know that there are some pretty ignorant people out there and my best advise is to just ignore them because they are not worth your time and effort. Put that energy into something worth while You will get 110% support from this site because we all have been there and know how you feel !!
