I had the surgery May 15 and have lost 45 lbs. have a follow- up tomorrow with the surgeon; hoping that he got all the records from the ICU! A medic saved my life in the ER. Young man hooked me up and murmured "inverted T waves" which got everything rolling. He also got me to radiology stat for the CT scan which showed all the clots. You guys are great! I totally agree! We nurses are the worst patients! I have pt, OT and a home health nurse reminding me of that daily! Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk

Well, I'm home from the hospital and rested up a bit. Home health, et al, have been here since Friday. There were many clots I'm both lungs; I not sure if the blood thinners or the angio/TPA got them, but lungs are clear. It looks like I'll be on Coumadin for a while, apparently this is normal. Thanks to all here who were praying! I appreciate that very very much! Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk

Liquid Percocet is either Roxanol or Roxicet, mami. Either way, it's noxious. Tastes like someone left NyQuil out in the weather. It works well but I went to Tylenol caplets ASAP. Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk

I had no choice of surgery - my surgeon is not bariatric; he is cardio thoracic. He doesn't do the RNY for weight loss. My bmi was 41 but the deciding factor was the hernia and esophageal problems and GERD with severe reflux. I read my post-op follow up sheets that went to my PCP and he had actually done 5 different surgeries while I was under. What a difference in my life now!! Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk

Absolutely! I went to a ladies' coffee/tea thing at 7am yesterday. I threw on a pre-op shirt and jeans, didn't think a thing about it. One of the gals, a really close friend, took me aside and told me about a lady who has been donating to our clothing ministry. She is several sizes smaller than I (was) and had just brought on a sack of gorgeous clothing, with my name on it. My friend Cheryl, who is also church secretary, told me about it an advised me to "take the bag....NOW!" LOL!! Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk

Has anyone had a problem with Water tasting just awful? I cannot stand "sweetened" waters, and was really looking forward to Dasani, or any of the other waters. A sip of any of them makes me sick. I try brushing my teeth before/after, but still the bad taste. And I've pretty much lost my appetite, too. funny thing is, I want to swim! Waiting for all the puncture wounds to heal for that! I've been reading through the threads, and I think I may be the oldest one here. I'm post-op May 15th and have had some ups and downs, like everyone else. Surgery was a shock. I had GERD for years, as well as an abdominal hernia that was worsening daily. My PCP sent me to gastro. Many tests later, gastro sent me to a surgeon in Pittsburgh. I failed his test, too (manometry). He referred me to Dr. Awais, at Mercy Hospital, also Pittsburgh. This was on a Thursday. Dr. Awais scheduled me for the following Tuesday. He was very upset that I hadn't had surgery earlier. And he was doing the RNY. There was no option with the hernia as large as it was. My weight was 228 and I had already been on liquids for comfort; I have been an LPN since 1974. Insurance basically said "Oh hell YES". So we were good to go. I thought. Mercy Hospital is lovely and organized, with very kind staff. We had a room the night before surgery, which saved us the 2 hour drive at 3am. Everything went fine... Until I woke up. 7 incisions. Collapsed lung. Gaaah. But the staff worked hard with me and I went home 6 days later. I now understand that this is a long time to stay after the surgery. I've read everything on the subject and the Dr.'s PA calls to check on me. Started puréed food last week and it's going slow. My husband has been a great support, and I have a fabulous counselor and church family. Never in my life did I think I'd have the RNY, especially so suddenly. 32lbs are gone, I can sleep all night on my back without vomiting. My head allergies are gone, as well. I am committed to honoring my body and the surgeons' work. Blessings, Julia Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk

I've been an LPN since 1973. What a surprise to finally be a patient. I had the surgery to repair a severely bad abdominal hernia; was shocked when the surgeon recommended the RNY! Surgery was 5-15-12. Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk
