I'd be interested in knowing what sites you found that information on...I find it to be inaccurate and quite outdated. As others have already stated, the first part of the Duodenal Switch is a VSG. This is typically only done nowadays for the super morbidly obese who need the malabsorption factor in addition to the restriction. Early on when they first started doing the VSG as a stand alone procedure or as the first part of a DS, they used a much larger bougie size leaving a larger portion of the fundus intact. The fundus is the stretchy part of the stomach. Leaving that much in there allowed for the stomach to stretch out and thus allowing regain. They have refined the surgery over the last several years and now use a much smaller bougie and removing the whole stretchy part of the stomach. What is left is likened to shoe leather. It will stretch and give a little bit, but not much. Those who have had regain with the VSG did not do so because their stomach stretched out but because they reverted back to bad eating habits and grazing. It is COMPLETELY different than the stomach "pouch" made with the RNY. That is totally and completely false. (no. 2 above). They also refer to the sleeve as a "pouch". We do NOT have a pouch. We have a fully functional stomach, albeit a smaller one. I'd take that list and throw it in the garbage where it belongs.

Thanks coreyandbrett and welcome to the boards! These boards were an absolute pleasure to dig through when I was pre-op. I just couldn't get enough information. It really helped as I felt I knew exactly what to expect post-op. There were no surprises....except I really WAS surprised at how easy my recovery was.

I can't say I've ever heard of that particular hormone reaction post surgery. I know that I've been much moodier since surgery and I figure that's due to my hormones. I'm thinking about doing a full hormone workup on myself just to see where I am. Were you on some hormone therapy before surgery?

I can almost guarantee you in a few months you will be singing a whole new tune. I think what you're feeling is normal...it seems a lot of people feel that way in the first few days/weeks post op. But once those lbs start dropping off and you're feeling more yourself, you're going to be very happy. Just take it one day at a time and before you know it, you'll be feeling much better. Hang in there girl...

The two week liquid diet is the absolute hardest and worst part about this entire process, IMO. If you can get through that, you'll breeze through post-op!! lol

Welcome to the boards! I found these boards when I was researching my surgery and what a lifesaver. I hope you stick around and post with us...good luck and I hope the time between now and your surgery passes quickly!

It's way too early for you to be feeling discouraged! I know patience is very hard to come by...I deal with that a lot myself especially when I see other people who were sleeved around the same time as me losing a lot more than me. I start to feel discouraged and then I make myself snap out of it! It's going to start coming off and you're going to start noticing it. Hang in there!

I changed my ticker to show total loss instead of just post -op loss.

Jane...you're absolutely right. I was reflecting the other day on how much LESS stressful everyday life is without all of those little worries that most people never even think about or have ever had to worry about. I think the best word I can come up with to describe it is that it's just so LIBERATING! Btw...I hit the halfway mark yesterday...and today down another lb...so I'm over the hump and on the way downhill....woohoo!

Oh Maddie...I'm so sorry to hear this. Just when you thought things were finally looking up to. Hopefully they'll get to the bottom of it, fix whatever the problem is and you can move FORWARD and feel GOOD! I'll be thinking about you and please update us as soon as you can.

And I must have missed that part about her previous stomach stapling. I did go back and read the thread of the other girl..and there was no mention of a previous surgery. But perhaps there was a reason for her too. I don't know. Again I apologize for that one comment...I typed that hastily and with a bit of frustration at being accused of trying to start a soap opera and drama when that was not my intention at all.

Nope...I have no motive. The reason I sent private messages is that this site does not allow you to link to a thread from another forum in public. I did post that originally and the post was removed because of the link. If indeed there were reasons why these two specific people (plus the several others I've heard about - note *HEARD*) then that is wonderful news and is a good explanation. As I stated, I was just putting the info out there....just trying to be helpful. I have no personal involvement. I don't even know anyone who has used this Doctor. These are the types of things I would have wanted to know about so that I could do my own investigating and research. That's it...nothing more nothing less. OH and forgive me for not using a qualifier in my post...like POSSIBLY. Good luck to all of you...I truly wish you all the best.

Congratulations! I"m 4 months out and loving my sleeve. Best thing I've ever done for myself! My advice is to just keep reading so you'll know what to expect.

I apologize if you think I was trying to cause a "soap opera" or any "drama". Not my style nor my intent. I came across that thread over there and then saw this one over here and thought you might be interested in knowing what type of surgery you were going to get with this doctor. Strictly informational that's all. I have no other motives here...I was sleeved here locally and no nothing about this doctor other than what I've read. The picture of the girls stomach and then reading there was another just like her was enough that I thought it might be beneficial for you all to know what kind of procedure she performs. If you are satisfied not getting a sleeve then that is certainly your business. The type of surgery she does leaves large portions of the stomach intact and both people reported having no restriction because of it. Again...my intent was not to stir up any negativity but simply to put it out there for informational purposes. Dr. Pompa may very well be a first rate surgeon and a very skilled one at that. That is not what my post is about. But if you go there expecting you're going to get a true sleeve....like the one I have...you're going to be disappointed.

Not to mention if it's sewn shut / stapled whatever...wouldn't that cut off blood supply to that tissue and eventually kill it? Wouldn't that tissue die? I'm no doctor, but that seems quite plausible to me.

I'm not sure why people think this new plication is "less invasive". They still do it laparascopically...they are still stapling your stomach. The only difference is with plication they are folding accordion style (from what I've read) and then stapling it off...without actually removing a portion of it. I really don't see how it could be reversible....after having all that for any length of time, I somehow doubt removing those staples that the stomach is going to just go back to being it's old normal big self. Furthermore, I'm not sure why anyone would WANT to reverse it. But I keep reading "less invasive" and that's what I really don't get. Can someone explain this to me?
