Taking The First Steps
LosingItForMe2011 replied to Joe I's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
joeint - did your PCP refer you to a bariatric group? If so that group/surgeon will have a list of things you'll need to complete prior to the request for your surgery be submitted to your insurance. Most folks have to have 2 Psych evals, a visit with the surgeon, a WLS seminar of sorts that explains all the options, nutritionist visit so they can explain the stages of eating after WLS and also to see what you're eating now and while trying to lose weight for the surgery...usually 2 visits with them as well. After that there will be some tests such as bloodwork, chest xray, abdominal ultrasound, some folks have a sleep study and/or stress study. Each group is a tad different but, there are requirements by each insurance. Some insurances want a supervised diet from anywhere of 3 months to 6 months. Some don't require it etc. But your bariatric center/surgeon will help you with all that. Good luck and welcome to the forum/boards. -
well then that's a great thing! Now to get myself movin LOL

Thanks jsch1man...you did bring up some I didn't think of and I'll be adding them to my list. Thank you for taking the time to post them. That is exactly my reason for the music too...you don't even know how much of a workout you ended up with when you move and grove to them whether it be walking, dancing, jogging or running Folks must have some favorites out there. Come on out and post them

Stomach Pains
LosingItForMe2011 replied to theby_88's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had that about a month out or so as well. Another question is...are you going to the bathroom regularly? I have had those feelings myself as well but more so when I was about a month out like you. I don't get them anymore or should say I haven't in quite some time. Once my diet because more "normal" texture wise it helped a lot. -
Afraid To Eat.
LosingItForMe2011 replied to honeydue29's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You're welcome Honeydue...and laura is correct...any liquid protein you take in counts towards your water intake according to my MD. Each MD is different but, most do count it as part of your liquid total. -
Abdominal Swelling
LosingItForMe2011 replied to cwctx's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I slept in a recliner for over a month but, like Lebim I ended up with an incision infection that was too uncomfortable to lay flat with. I wore sweatpants most of my recovery because the incision areas were pretty sore especially the infected one. You don't necessarily have to have a fever for an infection in an incision spot. I never had a fever but, I had one heck of an infection that had to be reopened in the doctors office and packed daily by a visiting nurse. Not saying that's what you have...but do pay attention for signs though. Anyway...you're still not that far out from your surgery so sleeping in the recliner if it makes it so you can rest....keep doing it. -
Pre-op diet I'm assuming? Congrats...and congrats on your surgery date!

Afraid To Eat.
LosingItForMe2011 replied to honeydue29's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello Honeydue...well your doctor provided you with eating stages because each stage prepares your pouch for the next plus also prepares you on how to chew your food well and what the texture has to be before you swallow. So think of it this way...you got the clear liquid and full liquid stages under your belt. You're now allowed puree'd foods because your doc feels you're ready. So....pick your first puree'd item and have it for say...lunch. Stick with your liquid for Breakfast and do the puree for lunch. Sit at the kitchen table, use a baby spoon so you don't take in too much at once. Do nothing other than concentrate on the meal in front of you. Take the first spoonful.....savor it in your mouth while putting down your spoon.....swallow when ready. Wait a minute.....try again. You should be able to get in about say 1/4 cup but, you'll probably have to build on that. Not everyone can get 1/4 in at one sitting. Go slow, and listen to the signs your body gives you. If you feel like the next spoonful is going to be too much...don't take it even if you haven't taken in 1/4 cup. It's ok......put it away and go back to it later if your hungry again. The whole idea is to go slowly. Also just one new food at a time...just like a baby. Some foods your pouch will like....some foods it won't. You'll know when your pouch says no. For me sometimes just the smell of something and I know there is no way I can eat it. You can do it...don't be afraid..just one small bit at a time. -
It's the little things folks take for granted that mean the most! Congrats!

Felling Yucko!
LosingItForMe2011 replied to Jilllorraine's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I haven't experienced dumping with what I've eaten so far. I try to be mindful of the fats and sugars but, then again not everyone has dumping. They do say that it feels like the flu and you want to go to sleep. So there is a chance the mayo was too much for you. You have to think though that you've had a pretty bland diet up until now and then you added some fat to it. Just that alone could make you feel funny....but subway tuna has more mayo than you'd probably use yourself at home so it's kind of a shock to your system. You may be able to eat that again later on, farther along but, sounds like it's possible it's too much for your body right now. I hope you feel better soon! -

Gastric Bypass Way More Dangerous...
LosingItForMe2011 replied to connie3's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon also said there are more complications of leaking or bleeding with the sleeve and that, that surgery hasn't been around as long as the bypass as far as history. She recommends bypass over the sleeve stating bypass has a better success rate weight loss wise. I wasn't sure if I wanted the sleeve or bypass either....I had already had the lapband and had it removed 4 years after it was put in. I didn't want to have to go through another surgery...I had to choose the surgery that would help me lose the most and had the best history so far. Bypass was it for me. Good luck with your decision. You'll hear lots of opinions but, the best opinion is your own. Do your research, read lots of studies and research some more. Knowledge is your friend in this decision. -
Stomach Feels Like It's Having Spasms?
LosingItForMe2011 replied to ambercowens's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You definitely could have picked up the flu or a stomach virus. Since you're only a week out you should call your surgeon. You don't want to be throwing up with all the healing to do inside and out. -

What Was Your Biggest Misconception About Surgery?
LosingItForMe2011 replied to hajones5891's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
After reading so many posts through out this website and others I thought for sure weight loss would be quicker for me but, nope. Then again why I thought that when I've struggled my whole life to lose no matter what diet I was on....but, I'm still happy with it now that I've accepted that at least I'm losing. Not every week and the pounds are stubborn coming off but, heck I'm smaller than when I started so that's a good thing. I thought eating and drinking would be easier as long as I chewed but, it is a chore. It's not enjoyable to me anymore...which truthfully isn't a bad thing in my opinion. It is hard to get the Fluid in and some days I'm not successful. I find I get so busy at work and now that the hunger pangs don't happen...I'm lucky I remember to eat or drink. This journey is going to be a long one for me...but, still it's a journey I'm glad I'm on -

Nectar Protein Powder By Syntrax - ?
LosingItForMe2011 posted a topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I've been reading a lot of reviews on the nectar Protein powder. Quite a few flavors and folks seem to like them. Anyone here try them? I'm thinking about ordering a sample package of them. Some websites sell a 13 flavor pack. From what I'm reading it mixes easily and the fruit ones, like apple remind folks of jolly ranchers and the cherry reminds folks of Kool-aid. Sounds better than some of the powders I've tried.
