I've struggled with my weight for as long as I can remember. I decided to go the LapBand route and had it put in place 2/13/2006. I did great the first year but, ended up having a slight slip. That lead to revision surgery in 12/2008 to a bigger size band and a year or so of not being able to get the band fills at the right level. I ended up with a prolaps that was so bad I felt like I was cooking from the inside out. For about a week and a half I could barely eat or drink with barely being able to get water down in the end. I went in for a swallow study and my surgeon was called while he was in surgery...emergency surgery to remove my band happened within 2 hours. That was Jan 2010. It took a while to adjust to the fact I no longer had my weightloss tool....glad I was finally feeling better but, depressed that the tool was gone. After a year of healing and more diets I decided to talk to my surgeon about RNY. Well, after seeing the bariatric center again and having all the visits and testing done all that was left was a surgery date, so I thought. My insurance was changing in January and all my visits were done in November so I called the center and let them know the insurance was changing. IN no way was I pushing the surgery date if they didn't think I was ready but, if they did think I was that to have it in December before the insurance change would be wonderful. I was told I needed to lose 20 pounds and see a therapist for 5 visits. Now if losing 20 was easy I would have done that already but, isn't that why I was looking for this surgery in the first place? So I asked them if they had a therapist list for me to start calling because apparently their therapist was for the initial interview only...they told me no I'd have to find one myself. Unreal! So after being told several times that their panels were closed, an opening finally came and I began my therapy. I had my 5 visits and during a regular PCP visit I told my PCP what I was going to do. She recommended a different bariatric group and after what I'd been through I felt it was best to change and started the process all over...but still continued to see the therapist. Afterall this is more a headgame than anything and I want that help even after the surgery. She had taught me and helped me realize how, when, what and why I went to food. I feel I have a good handle on it now....I'll always have to work at though and I know that! I love the new bariatric group and the support I get from them. I feel totally comfortable asking them questions via email or calling or even visiting when necessary. I have my surgery date and I'm looking forward to being on the losing side. I'm really looking forward to finally looking the way I feel. Yup...this outter shell is going to shrink and I'm going to do everything in my power to follow the eating rules of my bariatric group so that I can get myself healthier for me and for my family.
