  1. The naps are amazing! Not sure how I'm ever going to let those go!
  2. What type of nursing do you do? Even if I did a desk nursing job, i cannot even imaging going back after one week! You are very brave and ambitious! You may want to be open to taking more time off if they let you... Best wishes and luck for Monday though! I'll be thinking about you! Keep us updated on how you're feeling!
  3. Thanks! I always like my hot foods hot, so thus must be why they keep getting ruined! I'm excited to try it!

Don't feel guilty! I'm happy for you! I wish I felt the same, but will get there eventually! Hearing about you doing so well gives me a lot of hope, so thanks! Keep up the good work!

    October Sleevers - Who else

I'm feeling pretty good this morning- called my surgeon's NP first thing. She had me buy normal Zantac OTC and crush it in a little bit of apple sauce instead of taking the liquid- went down SO much smoother! She also told me not to bother with colace, because apparently that tastes even worse than the Zantac... She said if I dry heave with Zantac then I definitely will with colace- so went to CVS (my big field trip for the day- took a lot out of me) and got some miralax, ducolax, and simethicone (gas-x)... I've actually been able to take down some liquids this morning but am watching closely-- I have to do AT LEAST 2000ml per day, if I don't I'm supposed to call/ go to emergency room... So far it's only 11am and I've got about 500ml in me... Anyone else having a strange time taking in liquids? I cannot take big sips, but I've noticed I can do small sips frequently- not sure if it just empties from my stomach quicker? Drinking is just so different already!
  6. Need help! So I was discharged from the hospital today. Everything had been going very smoothly, my boyfriend is taking very good care of me- I felt very dry mouth and dehydrated at first, but I worked on fluids all afternoon until I felt better. I took a nap and felt pretty good when I woke up, (he is setting the alarm clock to make sure that I take pain medicine every four hours... if I got behind in the hospital, it took forever to catch up). I have not been able to get protein down since being at home, but figure for today the fluids are taking priority. I'm wondering if I cannot do protein because I have been very gassy this afternoon, feeling like I need to have a bowel movement, but have been unable to do so. I was relieved at first as I know that gas is a good thing, and let's me know all is moving along the way it should, and I do feel better when I'm getting the gas out too. However, I was just due for nighttime meds at 9 PM including my nighttime Zantac and roxicet... I took 1/2 of a sip of my Zantac (ranitidine) dose first, but then my mouth started watering and I felt like I was going to be sick to my stomach... Frankly the liquid medicine tastes sooo sooo bad!!! I'm not sure if it was the taste or the gas, but I knew I wasn't going to have an easy time with the roxicet, so I waited as long as possible and finally took it quickly (was only 10ml)... Immediately after taking it, my mouth started watering and I had to run to the bathroom where I started to throw up, however even though I just taken the red medicine I only dry heaved out clear spit... My fingers crossed the dry heaving didn't do damage to my sleeve! Anyone else have this experience? How/ what did you do? Any ideas for what to mix the meds in so they are more tolerable? Do you think it's just the gas that made it bad (I had been taking them oK at hospital, sure gross taste but no throwing up)? Any suggestions for that? I'm also wondering if I should think about asking my surgeon for a completely different acid reducer, such as Prevacid (dissolves in mouth)... Any thoughts/ suggestions are appreciated, as although I'm so happy with my new sleeve, Its still so new, so I'm nervous! Thanks!!! -Meg

Thanks! I think mine is pretty strict with no pills... That being said I'm hoping to see if it happens again in the morning... Not sure if it's a gas thing, a taste thing, or maybe something's truly wrong... I'll keep you updated.

    October Sleevers - Who else

Thanks! Today has had its fair share of ups and downs... Have still been having major issues trying to void, usually takes a good 20-30min before I can go, and sometimes even after that I still can't! Thankfully they have not had to straight cath (put a catheter in my bladder obtain the pee ) me again! Switched my morphine PCA to another medication called Dilaudid, stronger and works better, but now I'm so itchy!!! The stuff works great except when I fall asleep and forget to press button! Had a leak test this morning which I passed yay! Basically they had me drink some nasty barium contrast while being filmed under fluoroscopy... It showed that my staple line is intact and permitted me to start taking sips of water (1oz per HR). Still not really that hungry though, I think because I'm still having a good amount of pain... Anyone else have surgery on the 15th with a lot of pain still?! I was hoping to be discharged in the morning, but I don't think that will happen until Friday...

    October Sleevers - Who else

Okay. It's been 24 hours since I got my sleeve! My arms look like human pincushions, and I'm still on and off nauseous. The pain was actually a lot worse than I expected it to be, but already today as opposed to yesterday it's so much better, is improving by the hour. I'm really trying hard to push myself, trying to move around as much as possible, use the incentive spirometer. I was unable to pee after surgery yesterday, that was a big bummer and I had to have a catheter inserted and removed- but now I'm finally able to go on my own. My surgeon pulled the NGT this morning (it drained old blood all last night) and now I'm just waiting for the leak test... If all goes well I'll be starting sips of water soon! My belly is grumbling big time- definitely hungry, but I'm wicked nervous to put anything in it so soon... I guess I have to start sometime though! If there is one thing I have learned in the past 24hrs is that although this is NOT easy, I am sososo happy and excited for my second chance sending love and prayers to my fellow October sleeves, wouldn't mind some being sent back this way as well!

    October Sleevers - Who else

Just did my first CHG shower and things are finally starting to get real... Surgery tomorrow morning, I have to be at the hospital by 6 AM. It's crazy, I have not been nervous until now. But I'm still not really nervous, because I know it's the right thing to do-- I only got a little freaked out as I ate my last meal... ( i've been allowed three protein meal replacements and one meal per day) , while I know the liquids are only for a few weeks, The thought that I may not be up to eat some of my favorite foods ever again after that is terrifying!!! I feel really ready though, and I've such a great support system between my family and friends, and online boards-- you all have been so great! Starting weight: 276, Current weight (after 2 week diet): 259, Goal weight: <175

    Why sipping?

After surgery (regardless of type) you can become nauseous easily, and not tolerate any foods or liquids... This is just a normal side effect of the anesthesia. When you have your stomach worked on, such as with the sleeve, you're even more at risk due to the fact that your stomach is a lot smaller and more likely to be irritated by liquids. Even a small amount will fill you up quickly, and it could be really bad if you got sick after the operation. --a nurse
