Anyone else not want family sticking around after surgery?
NicoleSW posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Apparently I am a bit strange in that I don't want my family hanging out after I have surgery. My boyfriend is mad at me because I told him that he can come for the surgery and afterwards I want him to go home and care for my furbabies. I am the type of person that if I'm in pain or sick I just want to be left alone and I have a habit of being a complete b*tch after anesthesia. (I don't mean to be...). I don't want my family to see me all gassy and doped up on pain meds, nor do I want them in the room when they are checking incisions and whatnot. Plus I feel like he will be better off at home if I'm getting up every two hours to walk. I'm not trying to be mean or insensitive but I had a stereo-tactic breast biopsy done in 2011 and I refused to allow anyone to go (not for lack of their trying). I drove myself there, drove myself home and cried afterwards only because I couldn't go into Wal-Mart before going home because I bled on my favorite shirt haha. When I brought that up, he states it was different because it was outpatient and I was awake the whole time which was still traumatizing after I dropped my boob through a hole in an elevated table and saw the size of the ummm...extraction tool(?) they were using. Am I being unreasonable? We've had this same conversation a couple times and each time he acts like he hasn't heard a word that I've said. Maybe security can kick him out? Lol...KIDDING! Kinda... -

I get that. I've decided that I don't mind if my mom or dad stay, just not together because that would be awkward since they annoy each other lol. I know they all mean well. I've just always been incredibly independent and have a hard time with others worrying. Maybe if they are there they will worry less? Who knows. I'll have to see how I feel closer to surgery. Considering the waves of emotion I've gone through (excitement, fear, confusion, more excitement), I'm sure I'll change my mind ten more times between now and then lol. -

The aforementioned boyfriend won't be a problem now, but my mom is now asking, "Is your dad staying? Is grandma staying?" I think she's fishing for the invite?? -
I think the one at Riverside is open to all. When I get home I will see if I can find the dates and times.

I'm hoping to get the RNY in early October. I'm having my surgery at Riverside in Columbus with Dr. Rana. I'm really loving the program so far. Everyone is so supportive and they call you back super quick.

I've started my weight loss surgery journey and have about three months to go before my surgery. I have chosen to not tell many people because I didn't want anyone "raining on my parade" because I have been warned about that. I have told both of my parents and step mom and also my grandmother as well as a few very select friends and have a coworker who has had RNY and is also a good support. Everyone has been VERY supportive and to be honest, I have been surprised by the support. This morning I was so pumped up, I would have had the surgery tomorrow if they let me. Then, I told a close friend of mine who instantly said, "Are you sure you want to do that?" Then proceeded to tell me all the negatives. I already KNOW all the risks and the downfalls. I also am 27 and have substantial risk of diabetes (pre diabetic) and heart disease in my family (I already have mild inflammation of my cardiac tissue). Obviously, the risks out weight the potential complications. I'm not sure why I'm allowing the opinion of one person to deflate my excitement and confidence over my choice, and I'm not changing my mind and I know MANY others have had this happen. Just had to vent.

My best friend is lap band to RNY. She is set for October/November she lost a lot but has since had a lot of complications and gained a lot of her weight back. Good luck! We can do this!

I'm 27 too. My grandpa had his first heart attack at 34 (had two more afterwards, two open heart surgeries). Both grandmas have diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. We are definitely making the best decisions for us! Keep in touch! We can support each other.

Thanks Wayne! Yeah I did a lot of research...again, after what he said and the silver lining is that I felt even more positive about surgery when I was done. I told my last family member recently and she said, "Why can't you just do it some other way?" Then when I presented her with the research and my reasons for why this is what's best for me she goes, "Yeah, I guess it would be miserable being like you are." It was a shocker but I found it much easier to let it roll off my back. There's always going to be ignorant people who don't understand and I get that. But I have more supportive people in my corner than I originally thought and they are equally excited for me to get healthy. And if course, it's amazing to hear the positive stories from other WLS people! I'm getting the RNY around the beginning of October. thanks again!

1. See my collar bones again! I know those bad boys are under there...somewhere... 2. Cross my legs, I used to be able to cross them TWICE! (Crossed normally, then could wrap my lower leg around the other one.) 3. Go to Cedar Point and ride all the rides without fear that I won't fit. 4. Model for some boudoir/pinup photos. 5. Be able to do fun athletic events like the color run, glow run, mudathon, etc., without feeling like everyone is looking at the big girl. And how awesome must it feel I finish a triathlon?!? 6. Be able to run errands without some cowardly jerk yelling soul-crushing comments out their car window. "Whoa! That's one big b*tch," while pumping gas and "Jesus, you gonna eat everything in the store fat a**," while going into CVS. 7. Have a glamorous girls night out all dolled up in cute dresses! And an ugly dress party...look it up, it looks like a blast! 8. To not to be the girl with the pretty face or pretty eyes, or great personality. I want all of me to be beautiful! 9. To be healthy and not have to wonder if every ache and pain is something more serious. Ugh...I've probably thought I was having a heart attack four times... 10. Go to a beach and feel confident and fabulous!!! -

What do you miss most after Weight Loss Surgery?
NicoleSW replied to Menelly's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
This is my main concern! I love gulping water, especially before bed or after exercise. I'm also going to start practicing not drinking while I eat. -
I agree. I hate that I'm missing out on so many life experiences!!

Thank you so much! I know I'm doing the right thing for me. It just sucks when you don't have support of someone you were hoping would support you. I'm reading more often that people are happy with their choice and I have seen where a lot of sleevers end up with RNY. I too need those consequences. I hate throwing up so just that fact will deter me. I appreciate your response and it's really awesome to see someone who had the surgery that long ago still doing well. I know it's a whole lifestyle change but the benefits are going to be amazing. I don't even care about being "skinny" I want to be healthy and do things that I haven't done in a long time. I'm tired of missing out on experiences.

My surgery experience - what to expect
NicoleSW replied to ladykatie_'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Is it strange I'm more afraid of the catheter than the surgery itself?! Glad to see you didn't really know when they put it in. I am terrified of it and now I have my friend who is also getting ready to have the surgery paranoid too. Lol. Thanks for sharing your experience! My surgery is September/October! Things are getting very real quickly! -

I am thinking about getting sleeved. I was at first leaning towards the band because my friend has it and loves it. I went with her for a fill and 1. It freaked me out watching the procedure and 2. her doctor told me most doctors are leaning towards doing the sleeves and said that the doctors at OSU don't want to do them. I have a few questions that I was hoping to get opinions on. 1. After recovery are there any "forever" activity restrictions? I'm just wondering about getting hit in the stomach like with kickboxing or doing other activities. 2. Are there any foods that are restricted forever? I saw something about coconut somewhere, not a big deal, just curious. 3. Is there an impact in future pregnancies? 4. How long are complications a risk? Like leaks, staples coming out, etc. I just keep picturing a staple coming loose or tearing out 10 years down the road. I'm not sure if these are ignorant questions as I have just started doing research but I really feel like hearing from actual people rather than some research paper off of Google would be beneficial. Thanks in advance!!! Nicole
