    December Surgeries!?!?!?

The paperwork I have gives general instructions: the pre-op diet is comprised primarily of liquid protein shakes/drinks . . .there may be some solid food incorporated as well. Ultimately it's what the dietician discussed in detail with us.

Sometimes the best thing to do, even on this holiday, is to call the on-call doc or nurse. After all you're paying for their help!

There's a good book called "The Beck Diet Solution" which I recommend to everyone. It's CBT for weight loss. One of the principles is to give yourself credit. The author recommends even posting stickers around your home and work with just one word, "CREDIT", to remind you. For example, you're using myfitnesspal AND you're under your calorie limit! I hope this helps!

Sorry to hear about your pain in the rear. U-no-it is right about fiber fiber and water water. There are a lot of sugar free fiber supplements out there. At the risk of being gross, I use the sugar free psyllium husk ones when my pain in the rear happens. I use zinc oxide ointment when the tissues are tender. Oh and speaking as one, there are guys on this forum! Bariatric surgery isn't just a lady thing!

Thanks Hero, for all your hard work!

The diet's pretty boring actually. But that's why it's not sustainable, right? I wish I could help with your nerves.

Did you get the 3-ring binder from the NUT? It's in the Nutrition section, page 10. If not, it's basically any sugar-free, fat-free, liquid, (but the list also includes skim, 1%, or 2% milks). These can be consumed, along with Clear liquids, (like Water, broth, bouillon, herbal tea, sugar-free Jello, etc.), as Snacks between the Protein shakes. It DOESN'T list any food listed in the pureed or soft or regular foods lists. I hope these lists weren't just given to me!

I'm sorry about your sleep. I can't sleep without my CPAP. Occasionally I have to take a melatonin tablet to fall asleep. Have you tried melatonin?

I don't know why my last post was made to look like an append to yours. I guess there's still some glitches with this new forum website.

It is the 4th!! Are we allowed to have v-8? I have beem using the soy milk for added protein. I am just really hyper vigilant and do things a bit over board at times. Yes, we can have V-8. Really anything on the "full liquids" list that the surgeon's group gave us. We have to get in the habit of first having our protein though. I mix my powder with water. I suppose I could mix it with skim, 1%, or 2% like that list says. That would also help me get the calories I'm supposed to have. And I'll be praying for you on the 4th!

I am on day 7 th day and it gets easier. But fiber fiber and water water!!! I found a low cal protien drink that I can add a low greek yogart and 1/2 banana and ice it lasts awhile. Are you getting your 800-1000 calories in a day?? I am so looking for tomorrow and a plate of food. Chewing is what I miss most!! Gum helps a bit!! I chew on chewable vitamins! I'm getting more than the needed 80+ grams of protein. It's about 120 - 150 grams per day. But I'm at the low end of the calories. Each protein powder scoop has 30 grams of protein, but only 170 calories. I'm losing weight too. I'm going to add vegetable juice (V-8) and tomato juice. I'm drinking plenty of water and other clear liquids (broths, sugar-free jello, and sugar-free popsicles), so it's so far so good in that area. If 12/4 is still your surgery date, I'll be thinking about you a lot that day!

I have to admit that when I got my official approval for surgery I did rest a little easier!

Before today I was looking at everything I like to eat as a last supper! I hope that when I'm back to regular foods those favorites are still, and I can at least have a half cup portion!

This is only my first day! So far I'm not cheating. I'm able to set multiple alarms on my smartphone. So I have a protein shake every three hours. I have clear liquids in between. I could detail it more, but that might be too boring!

    December Surgeries!?!?!?

So far so good? I'm surprised how much food is just lying around my home and my work. Up to yesterday, I think that was a big part of my unconscious eating. Now I have to really focus. That is the worst part of this first day.

    December Surgeries!?!?!?

Funny you asked. I started this with a referral for a sleeve. But there was a miscommunication between my health board and my health maintenance organization, on what theyed actually cover. Since last month I've been changed to roux en y. I hope your referral experience was more straightforward.

I'm a boomer too. My surgery date is 12/10 too. Today I started my liquid protein pre-op diet.

    December Surgeries!?!?!?

Exactly! My wife works closely with medical doctors and she said the liquid diets act to clear the small intestine while shrinking the liver. And even though we'll lose weight as well, like you said, that diet isn't sustainable. Otherwise we'd just go on liquid protein diets.

Don't let those powders get the best of you!

    December Surgeries!?!?!?

I'm starting the liquid protein plus clear liquids diet tomorrow. I'm using Body Fortress brand whey protein powder. It's at wal-mart and the cheapest I've found. The surgeons group recommended Celebrate Vitamins. So I ordered those online today since I'll need to start taking them after I'm released from the hospital. Celebrate is also the cheapest bariatric supplements I've found.

I don't know why but that last post of mine changed my acronym for Health Maintenance Organization to asterisks. I didn't want anyone to think I was using expletives. But I have to admit I've thought of some during this journey!

    December Surgeries!?!?!?

I hear you. I kept calling the surgeon's case mgr and the HMO's case mgr. As a state worker I have a board which contracts with an HMO who also contracts with the bariatric surgery group. So I felt I had to keep bugging both case managers to get anything like timely responses. Even with that I began this journey last July and my surgery date's 12/10. You're in good company!
