I kinda know how you feel. I only wanted a few select people to know (hubby, mom, and friend at work who had it as well) and then my mom told my sister (who has weighed no more than 120 dripping wet her whole life) and my hubby told his coworker. After my initial shock and upset I tried to look at it from their point of veiw. My mom is dying and wanted to be sure I had female support and my hubby needed someone to talk to since this a huge change for him as well. Knowing it came from a good place helped me but I still wish I could have been asked before hand.

It's out now, so just make the best of that. Prepare your stock answers to questions you don't want to deal with. My stock answers included:
My doctor and I thought the surgery was the best option for my health.
My doctor is pleased with my progress.
    I feel great!
And, just remember to not share anything with your mom that you don't want everyone to know. It hurts to have to keep things private when you'd like to share, but your mom has demonstrated that she can't keep things private. I'm not saying don't share with mom, just know if you do, whatever you share might be shared with the prayer group.

I am sorry. I had a similar experience, but my mother told my grandparents and then my (very loving, but very nosey) grandmother told the whole family (cousins, uncles, aunts, some people who I haven't seen in forever, and anyone else that would be on her "phone tree"). Needless to say, I was in the middle of one of our big family get togethers when one of my distant cousins brings it up in front of everyone. All eyes and ears on me! I was so embarrassed and heart broken. I was not comfortable at the time and did not want anyone to know.
That was a couple of months ago and I have become more open about it. I am not hiding it anymore. I don't know if the situation with my family helped to force me to be comfortable, but now I can tell anyone and not give a damn what they think. I know how hard I have tried. I know that the weight isn't going to come off without it, and I know that this is the best choice I could have made.
I know how bad it feels to have your secret out in the open, but I also now see the liberation that having it out in the open can bring. Best of luck to you!

I feel your pain. I told my mother and she told her sister who told my cousin. The next thing I know is that my cousin is congratulating me on my lap band during one of our games of Words with Friends. I was salty. I didn't have a lap band! And it was not my Mom's business to tell my private medical decision to her sister. So now I know that the entire maternal side of the family knows because once you tell my aunt, the information is out there. Ugh.

I didn't tell anyone except my husband and my mother about my surgery. They knew about how important it was for me to keep this to myself.
I found out yesterday after church that my mother had told her entire "small group" which is about 50 people. I had someone walk up to me after church asking how I am doing after the surgery and how much weight I had lost. I was dumbfounded.
I asked her if she told and she said just her small group because she wanted me covered in prayer. I get that, I truly do, but she didn't have to tell them what kind of surgery it was. I am so hurt. It's an awful feeling to know your own mother has betrayed your trust. And if all those people know, everyone might as well know. She took that choice to tell away from me. It was the one thing I thought I had control over. I am so hurt.
I don't know what the point of this post is. I guess I just have to get it out. I'm having a really hard time right now.

In my case, my husband made the decision he did not want me discussing his (which means "our") surgery because we were both sleeved. He is like this about his finances and everything else. I respect his wishes and I realize now, 8 months later, that I like my privacy about the surgery. For instance, we go to a neighborhood club for dining and dancing, and our neighbors gush on and on, telling everyone about our weight loss. I am soooooo tired of this. Imagine if they knew we had surgery.

I had arthroscopic knee surgery in 2007. One visit post op (2 weeks) the surgeon told me I was fine, no need to come back. I was stunned and said "but I am still having so many problems with it". He smirked and said "well maybe you should lose some weight or retire". By the time I got home I was raging with my anger. I immediately made an appointment to return to his office and see him and he looked surprised to see me. LOL. I told him I was highly offended at what he said to me that day and came back just to tell him that. I told him I damaged my knee when I fell on it due to a malfunctioning elevator, not my weight or my job. He sputtered a semi apology about doctors not having a bedside manner. Needless to say when I had to have a total knee replacement 3 years later HE was not the surgeon I chose. Jackass! When I was 30, I would have just cried. Old age has great benefits, I am not intimidated anymore.

My husband soothed himself with low sodium boullion when he thought he might be hungry, or a SF popsicle. I found that distracting myself keeping busy worked for me. If you are just sitting around watching television, old habits like wanting to munch might be creeping up on you. I cleaned drawers and closets like crazy.

Just a thought for you. I developed extreme gout in both big toe joints after being sleeved and endured months of pain that would not let up. Most all I could do was sit with ice on my toe and was using a cane to walk. The gout meds (NSAIDS) I was told, would "eat" my sleeve. Scary stuff. I had to take them anyway and got deathly ill from the drugs. I lucked up and on May 8 I went to a compound pharmacist I have known for years, who believes in herbal remedies, who put me on a regimen of Curamin, Tart Cherry & Celery capsules, Milk Thistle, Omega 3 (plus 2 weeks of veggies, fruit & nuts). Tumeric sprinkled on my food, and lots of fresh celery. Within 2 days the gout went away. Two and a half months now I am still pain free. I would urge you to research some herbal remedies. I am a Believer! Good luck!

Some people do feel hunger. First you have to figure out is this head hunger or stomach hunger. Head hunger is when you are craving a specific thing, like Cookies or mashed potatoes. Stomach hunger = you would eat just about anything to make it stop, including plain grilled chicken breast or your least favorite flavor of Protein Shake.< /p>
If it is stomach hunger, then you have to figure out -- are you truly hungry, or are you experiencing stomach acid, which often presents as hunger? Many sleeve patients have increased stomach acid. Are you on a PPI? If not, you may want to ask your surgeon for a prescription. If you are, maybe ask for a different prescription. Lots of people find that if one drug doesn't work, another will.
If it really is stomach hunger and not stomach acid, then yes, you may be one of the unlucky folks for whom true hunger persists, and while there are coping strategies, you'll have to white knuckle through a lot of it at the outset, because it is so important that you stick to your eating plan and not push boundaries. Good luck!

Dr. Illan is apparently too busy from just coming back from vacation to talk about the Omar situation right now, but states he is very interested. I'm sorry, what is more important than the safety of your patients? I don't care how busy you are, this should be your top priority.

I'm not telling very many people while I'm still pre-op because I don't want to have to deal with the naysayers. When it's appropriate for people to know, I'll share it with them. Not going to forever keep it secret, but in the last few weeks headed toward surgery, I'm not telling anyone.

There is a finding checked by the federal court judge in his order concerning Omar which states "the defendant has a significant prior criminal record."   These documents are public record.   In the US, we are lucky to have diligent employers who do background checks.
