Pre-op diet / protein shakes "hacks"

The SF creamer would make me think carbs..... Have you tried Torani SF syrups? Multiple flavors, no carbs. They are a staple at my house. I even add a little to yogurt.

I want an apple SO BAD right now

No fruit per our surgeon. There are going to be a lot of things we will have to give up. But I know it will be worth it. The sugar in fruit kept my husband's blood sugar stable. Thank God it is now stable without the fruit, with sleeving. Counting my blessings.

Kitty, the doctors are the experts. They know what they are doing. Please focus on what you can have and this is going to help you stick to plan after surgery also, if you seriously want a lifestyle change and health change just go with it. We just dealt with it because fruit was keeping my husband's diabetic blood sugars stable during the night but also was spiking his blood sugars very high by morning. Either it is bread, Pasta, food, fried chicken, and all that stuff we used to be able to have, that we are missing. N0 fruit now in our lives and not missing it. No more high blood sugar either!! Best wishes!

Have you also tried mini meatloaves in a muffin pan? Or small egg/cheese/turkey sausage type things baked in muffin pans like mini Quiche? You might tolerate eggs another way.

Husband and I are sticking with basics awhile and enjoying it. No worries with cooking and planning. Have cottage cheese, refried Beans, FF Soups, etc. on hand. No breads, Cookies or temptations here. I snack on a couple well chewed freeze dried Edamame which I love. I did make some steamed cabbage this week to get some veggies in. Every recipe calls for so much and we don't eat the leftovers so much. I made a delicious crockpot chicken with FF mushroom Soup 5 weeks out, but it was so good I didnt chew so well or swallowed too fast. Decided I would wait on experimenting with recipes. I am loving chili and warm foods, so exception is to make chili lowfat with beans and enjoy! We are still having a shake 1 meal a day.

Hello there, I am 67, my husband 66. Good for you, we are still kicking and want a good quality of life, right! We had a rough year with health problems, and 10 years of weight loss seminars kick started us in the butt in June this year. It was now or never as our health worsened. We have hope. We have a good like, and it can only get better. Already both of us are off some meds, and feeling so much better. Would love to follow your journey and you can message me anytime for questions and will be happy to be friends! Let me know how I can help you!

    Mixed feelings i need advice

I was so embarrassed before surgery when my husband told someone "we have been eating like HOOOGS!!!!! " He would go a month on liquid shakes and then yes, be starving to death. Guess it looked like hogs eating. Thank God I do not have to hear him ever say again I eat like a HOG!!!!!!

    Mixed feelings i need advice

The new normal is everyone of our friends and relatives pigging out and we cannot. Not pigging out is our new normal and it feels so good to me, but I miss food in the past 7 weeks. However I can eat so many things, Soups, eggs, shakes, yogurts, you all know. I think winter doldrums also keep us in large sweatpants and big fluffy robes, but when Spring comes we will all put on shorts and swimsuits and say it was really worth it. Just remember this is a really bad winter but it won't last forever. Tomorrow is a better day. Our moods come and go. Still recovering from surgery and lifestyle change. Hugs!

New to group, 58 and getting cold feet

I feel more "normal" than ever. I feel like I am in a happy place in life now, I feel hope. I feel excitement for our future. I feel I won't end up like two dear friends who settled for their sofa, television, sweets and food, who ended up in a nursing home together, until they died, unable to walk, getting bigger and bigger and paying the staff to bring them candy and sweets. I refuse to settle for this. Rest in peace, they were dear to me.

HELP.. I need advise to get back on track!

So sorry to hear this Sheila. We never get past that pain, we just try to cope. I struggle every Thanksgiving and Christmas since 2006 when my 30 year old son died of a heart attack 2 days after Thanksgiving. There are so many people in this world we need to give extra love and hugs to. You will get back on track. The pain of the accident and the fibromyalgia must be awful. Back on a weight loss plan will help those aches and pains. Best wishes for the new year, and a big hug!

think all of us were prepared for so much worse. Loving life. I just drink and sip all day long and do not worry about it. Best wishes!

New to group, 58 and getting cold feet

I am 67, sleeved Nov. 18. I am so excited about my new life, getting back on our boat and going all over North Florida. I am excited about kayaking with my daughter on the Gulf Coast. I am thankful I am off Metformin for diabetes, and 2 of my 3 high blood pressure pills. I never looked back once I decided to have the sleeve. I am thankful I have a quality of life again and won't sit fat and old in a recliner because I cannot walk like this past year. I am thankful my feet do not make me cry with the pain of neuropathy anymore. I am most thankful my husband's (sleeved 12/2) average blood sugar is 110 instead of 40 and 400 daily. Greatest gift we ever gave ourselves. Good luck with your decision.

    Craving

I love experimenting with recipes. Not doing much cooking yet though, just so much easier for me and my husband to grab what we like and what is habdy. I love winter Soups the these freezing nights.

    Craving

Choices like that Krysten, are what made us fat. No one loved wings better than me and my husband. We do not eat like that anymore because we so not want to go back to that place in life. Please redirect your focus and try different recipes!!!! Hugs and inspiration your way!

    Missing food right about now.

Just take your wonderful family recipes and rework them with FF sour cream, cream cheeses cottage cheese, and FF Soups cooked in crockpot with chicken and spices. So many food combinations there. Make a lowfat Soup with FF chicken broth thickened with FF refried Beans and spices and veggies. Your kids might like to try new foods. Pizza is a killer, I would hate to have it near me Mona. If you have traveled this far you know you cannot keep eating pizza. Learn to make vegetarian pizzas and sneak in blended veggies in the sauce, your kids will not even know they are there. Your kids deserve eating healthier and I so wish you the best of luck! I know how hard it will be but you are on a MISSION~~~~~!!!!!!

    Hey everyone

LOL Janie, yes the help here is amazing! You want to live to see your grandchildren so I am happy for you in this journey! My husband and I were sleeved Nov and Dec. About 10 years ago my niece had the bypass. She has done great. Her weight still goes up but she maintains and gets it off, plus her surgeon has followed her 10 years which is great. Best of luck!

    Anyone from NZ out there!

Florida here, but hello and good luck!
  21. Scarlett, here is the Quiche recipe I have used since the 80s. I will give you the original recipe and tell you how I tweak it. I learned I could make it without the crust when I as on the Atkins diet. 8 oz bacon, cooked, crumbled and drained, or 1 can drained crabmeat 3 eggs 1 unbaked pie shell 1/2 tsp Dry Mustard 1/4 tsp salt 1/2 cup milk 1 cup heavy cream 1/4 tsp pepper 6 oz shredded Swiss cheese Sprinkle bacon or crab in bottom of unbaked pie shell, along with shredded cheese. Mix other ingredients and pour into pie shell. Bake in preheated oven 375 deg. until top of Quiche is lightly browned. [Now when I make it, No pie crust! Use glass pieplate, spray lightly with Pam. I recently made it at Christmas. I only used 3 slices crumbled bacon for the entire pie. I used 3/4 cup heavy cream and 3/4 cup lowfat milk. 4 oz Swiss cheese instead of 6. I eat a very small piece, either for breakfast or dinner, and it keeps well in the fridge 3-4 days]. The Swiss cheese really makes it. Hope you like it.

    Anger

I read about those feelings a lot here, the anger. Frustrations. I think winter doldrums might also be a source, and we can look forward to sunshine, getting outdoors, taking a walk, or sitting in the park which will help a lot. Exercise is great so try to get the body in gear. Good for you taking advantage of the OA meetings. Never stop clawing your way to the top!!!!!

    Protein shakes

Get you a good Protein drink like Premier Protein and a Slim Fast and read the labels side by side and compare. You want the best for your health and your sleeve. Don't compromise if you can help it, because you must have healthy ingredients with essential Vitamins to maintain your health, body and hair. Empty calories, extra sugar or carbs won't do it! You deserve it!!! On another note, experiment with shakes, get unflavored protein powders and make shakes with SF pudding, Crystal Light powders, SF Torani syrups, etc. There are so many healthy choices for you. Good luck.

HELP.. I need advise to get back on track!

Dear Jenn, I am so sorry to hear of your struggles. My sister died from ALS and that alone is enough to turn your world upside down with your Dad. I have had so many problems also, and I can understand where you are in life. I think if you take charge of your health right now it might be the only thing you can control. It is something you can do. Get you a Journal, and get busy. Record everything. Set goals, weigh, meal plan. One minute at a time, one day at a time. Sometimes we feel as if life has slapped us down and we cannot get back up, but for me, I have climbed a Mount Everest of personal problems, deaths, divorce and illnesses in my family, and I know you can get back up and take charge of your life. We are challenging you! Get going!!! Praying for you this morning.
