    60+ sleevers please help

Congratulations Sue! My husband and I are 67, both sleeved the end of November, both had hernia repairs, and we both have done wonderful. I am off Metformin and my husband is down to a minimum dose of insulin. Would do this again in a heartbeat, have not had one "sick" day or bout of nausea from the sleeve. I feel bad for others who do have problems.

Feel like I hit a wall

Honestly if you don't have the flu or something making you sick, I think you might be a little down in the dumps whether you believe it or not. I have had bouts of depression many years and I know that when I hide under those covers and want to sleep, that it is depression. It usually passes in a few days, but many times I needed medication. Good luck. Life gets us down sometimes, even though we think we are okay!

    Judgemental People

Honestly it is a relief not to go around talking about the surgery. My husband made the decision he did not want me to tell anyone his business, so I agreed. We recuperated in the winter months, said we were dieting, and now all anyone wants to do is oooh and ahhh (trust me, it gets OLD fast!). Thank God I am not having to discuss my surgery with them. Working in a hospital makes it tough, but I had so many nurses there tell me they had or are having the surgery so it seems it is well accepted in the medical community.

    Not big enough for WLS?

I love this! If you are like me I am tired of a lifetime of cutting back on my eating, I have bought weight loss pill junk off the Internet, my husband paid $10,000 to Optifast (2 two year liquid plans), and my entire family has paid Weight Watchers for several years of their advertising costs in our lifetime. Finally, many years late, my husband are no longer FAT. I would so do this again. In a heartbeat! Good luck!

How long do these headaches last?

I had a horrible headache for a full week and more prior to surgery. I remember being prepped for surgery and all I wanted was the headache to go away. I was dehydrated so I assume that might gave been the problem. Good luck!

    new and scared

You have to eat very slow and eat very carefully, making sure you chew well. I choked on a small piece of chicken at 5 weeks, it stuck in mid chest. Thought I was having a heart attack. I went back to mushy foods 2 weeks. At 6 months out for me and my husband, we share a filet mignon and salad. We share a hamburger minus the bun. We have sauteed fresh Florida fish often. Together we eat 1/4 the amount we used to. I buy chicken salad because there is no need to make a big bowl. We generally eat one meal a day except I have yogurt for Breakfast. We do not eat any bread or Pasta, a choice we made because of diabetes. My husband says he knows he can eat anything, he just chews very slow and deliberate. I can eat a few nuts. I am now eating fruit and many veggies. Honestly I cannot think of anything I could not eat, but I just don't have the cravings and it helps not having it in the house. Always eat before you go grocery shopping. Life is good. Hope this helps.

Nov 2013 Sleevers Progress So Far...

Congratz everyone, I am down 60 lbs and my husband down 90 lbs, sleeved 2 weeks apart. Health has improved drastically for each of us. We just drove from Florida to Kansas for a visit I promised my now 90 year old Uncle 10 years ago (have been too afraid to go), without my husband's ankles swelling like balloons. My husband booked himself a 7 day cruise for his birthday next week. I will never have to buy a 2nd seat airline ticket for my husband again to keep from embarrassing him if he didn't fit in the seat. He is giving away his 3X clothes. He has kept clothes for 30 years as his weight went up and down from starving himself. Never again! Life is wonderful and we are not wasting a minute. Best of luck to you all for continued good health.

I remember the feeling of terror for my husband and myself as we prepared for surgery back in October, 2013. I remember the look on my husband's face in the final pre-op meet with the surgeon, and I told him he looked so scared. The surgeon said he should be scared. I said yes but if he does't have this surgery what will happen. The surgeon agreed, because of the terrible comorbidities he had. Together we were on 5 BP meds, heart stent, asthma, he had diabetes 30+ years, cellulitis, I was newly diagnosed diabetic, knee replacement, neuropathy, and neither one of us could walk a block. I do not know your age, but we are 67, and looked at WLS 10+ years ago and he was too scared and felt the other procedures were not safe. We looked at the sleeve several years ago and he wanted them to practice a little more on other people. If the sleeve had been available sooner, we would be in better health today. At least now I feel we have added a few years to our lives. We feel great, we just made a car trip from Florida to Kansas (his ankles did not swell like a balloon), and we are leaving Sunday for a 7 day cruise. The year prior to surgery we sat in the house, barely moving. Life has changed tremendously for us. I am down 60 lbs. and he is down 90 lbs. We would do it again in a heartbeat. The best part is not craving food anymore. We can drive all day, chew a few nuts or a piece of jerky (almost 7 months post surgery), and for dinner, split a salad and have half of it left over. Now that is awesome! Best wishes!

    clothes

Right! Why. Why would they do that? They outta design clothing for larger women that is more flattering. I wish I was at where you are now. What did you start out at? How far out are you? I am 5'4", and at my heaviest a year ago was 230. Asthma, diabetes, neuropathy, knee replacement, and on 2 HBP meds. Went to a seminar in August for my husband, and discovered I qualified. Signed up, jumped through the hoops. Surgery was 11/18/13, my husband 12/2. I have lost 60 lbs, he has lost 90. He was obese his entire life. I dieted my entire life and we had lost the battle. I am 160 now and people call me skinny. No one believed I weighed 230. If I don't lose another pound I will die of pure happiness. I am off Metformin and a BP med. Neuropathy is gone. Feel great. You will be here before you know it. Good luck!

    clothes

I still find myself in the plus size section of the stores, and shake my head like WTH am I here for LOL. Hard to believe I am now in the size 12s shopping. No more big "flowerdy" clothes my sister always laughed about in the plus sizes, that probably made us look larger!

    VSG in the AM

Good luck Pew! My husband and I were sleeved, him on 12/2/13. He has gone from 320 to 240 and still losing. This was the best decision we made for our health and wish we had found it 20 years ago! We actually did go to seminars 10 years before we decided the sleeve was for us. Your life will change forever. You will learn everything you need to know here, so hang onto this group for support. BTW, I would say the surgery, recovery, and past 6 months were 10 times easier than we expected at our age. Best wishes.

Healing with a 2 year old?

Definitely told not to lift, and with a toddler hard not to lift and love on them. But you can hurt yourself - even I lifted a laundry basket of clothes about a week after the sleeve and felt the effects about 24 hours. You can plan little picnics and fun things with your kids, get on the floor and play. Crockpots are awesome for one pot meals, so are rotisserie chickens to feed your little ones without much planning and time in the kitchen. This will be the best thing you ever did for your children. Good luck!

How long after surgery u feel better?

When we are impatient and wanting things to happen quickly, we are wishing our lives away. Life is really fleeting. I sit here at 67 years old and say where the heck did those years go. Enjoy the sunshine, walk outside and feel the breeze. Cherish each moment of your recovery and like me, six months will pass before you know it. Just a faint memory now, that post op stuff!

How long after surgery u feel better?

My husband and I felt great and I was at the store 3 days after surgery. I needed no pain meds at home. I still feel great. If something is wrong please call your doctor's office and get their opinion. Maybe you have a problem that needs fixing. I am 67 years old and never felt better in my life. I wish you better days!

    Any issues over 12 months

What happened? Tell your story and probably someone can relate and help you with how they handled it. We had no problems but we all know there are risks. I hope things get better each day for you. Here's a hug, Linda

Good luck! The worst is over, the pre-op diet and the surgery. Now it is just coasting along, figuring out what works for you food wise, and losing weight! You will find lots of help here!!!

    clothes

I have a dear needy friend who has loved all her "new" clothes from my closet. It is fun helping someone else out. Also I have replenished a few things with some Ebay finds and shopping is now a fun thing to do. Before surgery I refused to go shopping. Now I seem to be shopping every day!

How long before you could eat popcorn again?

At 5 weeks after surgery I choked on a small piece of soft chicken cooked in the crockpot. It was horrible, the pain felt like a heart attack and I thought it was. I personally at almost 7 months will not try popcorn for that reason. Your tastes will change, and you might enjoy a SF popsicle, or some yogurt while they eat popcorn. Good luck!

Before you know it this will be behind you and you will be losing that dreadful weight. I promise it will be so worth it! Good luck and keep that thought in your head, how good you will look and feel.

    I'm exhausted

It may be mental, because it is a scary process that may have you more upset than you think you are. I remember being very nervous, especially about my husband who had so many co-morbidities. Hang in there! The surgery and recovery was 10 times easier than we anticipated. I feel 20 years younger with 60 lbs. gone. I promise it will get better!

    new and scared

Just like to say to you that life is wonderful, we have never had a day of sickness or nausea with the sleeve. Would do it again in a heartbeat. Hardly anyone knows we had surgery, just that we are dieting.
