My sleeve surgery date is Jan 29 2014
AuriP replied to toni1960's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Good luck to you. I should hopefully get a date sometime in Jan. I had lap band 2009. I lost 30lbs and gained back plus 10. Hopefully this is the last winter Holiday we will be big. Message me if you need encouragement since I'm in the same boat as you although a little behind you. -
Yes, I had WLS and YES, I *AM* doing this on my own.

I just flipped through a people's magazine from 8/13 and it was about some people who lost 100+ pounds and in the title is said no surgery and no gimmicks. I didn't know surgery was considered a gimmick or joke in their eyes. I've been through surgery for lap band and will now be getting the sleeve. I'm scared sh*tless to say the least but I know that this will be the best for me. I know that this will be the last holiday that I will feel miserable because I'm so big and look horrible in everything I wear. This will be the last year that I don't go out and play with my kids in the snow. This will be the last year that my body hurts from the weight I am. Good post and I was just thinking about making one of these posts myself. -
Thank you all for your input and for making this post so informative. It definately is something that everyone needs to think about before they commit to surgery. If we feel she is crazy or not it had everyone thinking in one way or another. That is the great thing about debating or peacefully disagreeing.

I found an interesting blog describing all the bad things that weight loss surgeries do to the body. It was an interesting read and I wanted to see if the Vets had any insight on this. She seems a very passionate about what she writes. Anyway here is the Blog....http://suethsayings.blogspot.com/. Have any vets had any of the problems she stated?
-
I only found it interesting in her obvious hate of all WLS. Even when a woman mentioned her mother getting one done in the 80's and how her mom is doing awesome and is really active with her grandchildren, she still had some hateful things to say. Didnt even congradulate the woman's mom on her sustained weight loss. I was just wondering if she was being a fear monger and if any of her "facts" were true for some who have been out longer than a year.
-
Let me make this clear that I in no way believe the hype she's protraying. I just found her to be extremely angry and vengeful and wanted some insight. I am still going to get the surgery. I just wanted to verify how quacky she seems without me immediately saying so. I have a friend who has gone from 389 to 179 and has kept it off for 4 years with none of the problems this woman has stated.

Those who had their bands unfilled before surgery, did weight come off for you? Was it easier? I am hoping since I had the unfill that I am able to eat more dense protein in hopes of losing,
-
My upper GI showed that my band was overfilled. It was a trickle of fluid going through it. No wonder it didn't matter what I ate how I would always feel stuck or vomit. The doctor unfilled my band(ouch) and wants to see me in another month. Hopefully I can lose the 10 lbs I need to, to get the ball rolling for surgery day. Luckily for me I had no slips or prolapsed belly, so the doctor believes there is minimal damage, if any. My surgeon made me feel better by not being able to follow the nut diet orders. He said that with a band as tight as mine, I was forced to eating what I can and sliding back into that mentality. No matter how much I wanted to eat better, it was physically impossible to get any dense protein in. Wish me luck on losing this weight which is totally possible now that I will be able to eat protein again.

That is exactly why I said a little. The mind is a very powerful thing and it is a struggle now to not eat junky foods and keep my mind occupied on other things while I'm bored or work is going slow( working evenings is very slow most days). I understand eating around your procedure because I have done it, at first because I wanted treats, later for survival due to my band being too tight. I agree with you whole heartedly and just wanted to add my own little piece about it being nice to not be sabotaged early in the game like most diets tend to be. -
I have to lose or else they wont schedule surgery. I need 10 lbs of weight off. I had 5.5cc in a 10cc band. It was too tight as the barium was slowly going through. It was nice to have a meal without vomitting or getting stuck.

While I havent been sleeved yet, I read on here from someone that acid reflux can cause hunger symptoms. Have you discontinued your acid reflux meds? If you have, maybe try using them again and see if it helps.

I agree but while It will never be over, it's going to be a little easier to deal with now. It will be easier to say no to it than it was before. When we have the will power it will be a little harder to be sabotaged by our stomachs being empty all the time, or feeling deprived and depressed due to still being hungry. That is what I'm most looking foward to. -
I lost 30lbs of the 100+ I needed to lose with the band. The only reason I lost so much was due to an only liquid diet. I couldn't get anything else down. I was miserable and my husband thought I looked sickly. I would try to eat chicken breast and it would come back up or hurt when it finally went down. I was banded in 2009. Now when I eat I have anxiety. Will it go down, will it get stuck, why can't I eat properly? I ammore focused on food now than I was pre band. I hope your surgeon let's you change to the sleeve if that's what you want. I am in the process of getting a revision and I can't wait until I don't have to fear food anymore.

Sleeve Is So Much Better Than Band.
AuriP replied to DebDukes's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I sure hope I'm as happy and successful as you are. The band is horrendous and I get so anxious and depressed eating. I cant wait to be free from it. Hopefully 12/9 I can get some answers and a surgery date in the next couple of weeks. Congrats and Good luck on your continued success. -
I believe all insurance companies are like this. When I got the lap band I had to have a ton of things done. -2 nutritionist appointments -2 surgeons appointments -Psych evaluation -Chest X-ray -Lab draws -Upper GI I forget if there was more but that was most of it. They really want to make sure you are serious about this. I have Preferred One out of MN.

Alls fair in love and war. She started it so its on fair that she eat crow! I wish I was the fly on your wall come Thanksgiving Day. The look on her face should be priceless. Make sure to gift her some clothing that are way to big for you or give her some of her own clothing back.

Reading this post more has me thinking about my children and how I do with them. We typically don't have a lot of junk in my house, either because I have eaten most of it or we don't have enough money to buy it with the things I do buy. I buy fruits and veggies to give to them. They have no qualms about eating a veggie or fruit. It would go easier if my husband would eat fruit or veggies. He pretty much doesn't and him being diabetic isn't helping him much either. We most likely enable each other and he's a little nervous of me going through something so drastic(as he says) but I have to do it for us and our children. He exercises and has lost 60lbs as a result of his diabetes but his diet is still pretty crappy. I also give my oldest son fruit as a reward for doing good in therapy (he's 3 with a severe speech delay) , I'm sure I'm doing him no favors. This is hard especially when all you see on television or in magazines is food or super skinny peopleeating big macs.

I sent in for a transfer of my information from one clinic to the one I'm having my revision from. I sent it in 9/25. I waited for the whole month of Oct seeing as they could have been busy. I called them on the 30th after the other clinic still didn't have my information. They claimed they never got the fax even though I got a confirmation that it had went through. They just sent the info today. I just got to schedule an appointment with the surgeon and it won't be until 12/9. I could have been to see him or atleast got to see him this month but no dice. I knowits my fault but had I known I would have called much earlier. So now I have a whole month to wait. It will be hard to schedule my surgery since my schedule at work comes out a month at a time.

How long did you stay out of work? I am a nurses assistant. I need to know how much time I need to take to heal. How was your first day of work when you came back. I work all over the hospital that I work in so I can't predict the amount of lifting/ moving/extending I would have to do everyday. I typicall work 64 hours every 2 weeks.
-
You should have told her the easy way out would be to never have tried at all and continued the destructive behaviors. Going on a liquid diet for a month is not easy. Going into surgery and recovery is not easy. Trying to change your eating habits for good is not easy.
-
By her ticker she is 3months out. All I've got is good luck OP. I haven't has surgery yet.
-
Thanks all for the info. I will probably be sleeved late Dec to Mid Jan. Most likely Mid Jan. That should give me more than enough time to get my affairs in order and not have to worry bout anything while recovering.

This post made me cry. Not the bad way though. I am the sneaky eater. My drug of choice was oatmeal cream pies, or cheese cake. I could eat those until I got sick. I often ate them inprivate after my husband and kids would go to sleep. After the box would be gone I'd feel crappy, depressed, and ashamed. Then I got the lap band and did everything I could do right but was constantly hungry. Then it got to the point that the band stopped helping me and I would get sick and hurt eating meat and veggies foods. I turned to sliders to beable to eat, gained weight, became more ashamed. I am planning on finding a psych that deals with food addictions. It is sad and encouraging to know that I'm not the only one to deal with this.
-
I'm trying to find the right place to post this. I hope I'm right on this one. I am in the process of getting a revision from lap band to sleeve. I am currently breastfeeding my 5 month old. I was wondering if anyone has done this before? I am wanting to still breastfeed until he is 1-2 years old. Do you think I can have the surgery and still breastfeed?

The 23 states that will offer weight loss surgery in their Obamacare plan
AuriP replied to mswisdom's topic in Insurance & Financing
My insurance company covers the surgey and I'm not in a state that is listed on here. Are you saying that now my insurance will not have to cover this surgery? That would leave a more expensive bill on these companies with the amount of Diabetes meds, bp meds and so forth that would need to be paid in order for people to live. Seems a bit counter productive to me.
