    Drinking Too Much Post Op?

Some people have swelling and others don't. The swelling can make it hard to get the thicker liquids down, there are clear protien drinks out there, they are much thinner and eaiser to drink with swelling. ~Mandy

    TGIF NJ chat!

Just checking in, still sick, really sore throat today. I am going back to the dr tomorrow most likely. He was talking about going into the hospital for a day or so, for IV antibiotics and rest. For the low carb thing, can you do spaghetti squash? I lived on it for a while, ate it with all kinds of sauces, some olive oil, garlic and Parmesan cheese. It's really versatile, I cook it in the microwave. ~Mandy
  4. I was told 30-45 mins. Others have been told upto an hour and a half. That seems excessive to me, 90 mins 3 times a day, would make it hard for me to get my 64 oz in each day. Think about it, if you are awake 16 hours a day and not supposed to drink for 30 mins prior to a meal and 90 mins after a meal, that's 2 hours plus the time it takes to eat. So 2 hours 20 mins, times 3 is 7 hours of not drinking. And I was told nothing for an hour and a half before bed, that is 8 and a half hours of not drinking. Leaving only 7 and a half left for all those liquids. Not gonna happen. I try for 15 before meals, and 30 after. It has worked for me so far. ~Mandy

    Tortillas?

The only way I can do eggs is egg salad. I can't eat egg whites alone at all. Omlets are a sure way to get stuck. ~Mandy

    Bread/rice/pasta discussion

I can't have rice at all. I can have a very small portion of pasta, if I get spaghetti and it has to be angel hair. I mean 1/4 of a child's portion and I am done. I eat wheat crackers, but bread does not work for me. Like I said in another thread, I had 1/2 a grilled cheese sandwich and knew it was time for a fill. If I can eat bread I am not restricted properly. I will try a piece of the crust of bread and regret it, one would think I would learn, but I guess not. I finally gave up trying rice a few months ago and I am over 18 months post-op. It just never works and always causes me pain and 99% of the time a PB. Just not worth it to me. I have also given up mac n cheese, that too took some time for me to finally say, Done, no more. ~Mandy
  8. I can drink normally, I have had a 20oz propel in an hour no problem. Are you newly banded? I was told by my doctor the same thing post-op, he said it was so that people with swelling made sure to get in the minimum fluids for the day. If I could drink more go ahead. I had little swelling and was drinking warm tea with ease. However if I drink something cold, my band feels much tighter. I usually have a cup of hot tea prior to meals. ~Mandy
  9. It's good to hear the liquids are helping. I just discovered something called keifer, it is a pro biotic (kinda like a yogurt smoothie) and has some live cultures in it. I am on a very strong antibiotic and it has helped to protect my stomach. Might be worth checking out, I got mine in the dairy section right beside yogurt. Dannon makes it, so does lifeway. I bought the lifeway, it was cheaper had more in it and came in more flavors. Maybe that will help to coat your stomach and also boot the immune system. ~Mandy

90 day insurance wait for a fill?

The hospital does the billing, and that covers the fluro, the surgeon and the hospital fees. My surgery was billed at $33,000. No where near that was paid but that is what they bill. The cash price was half that. ~Mandy

Weight loss with Fish vs, Poultry and Beef

My favorite fish is prepared like this: a piece of fish (just about any kind) some lemon juice some garlic some I can't believe it's not butter Or just lemon and cajun blacking seasonings I wrap the fish in foil, top with spices and lemon, seal the foil like a pouch, place in the toaster oven or george foreman grill until almost well done. I usually have a baked sweet potato with my fish. My big weakness is breaded shrimp, but I also like it steamed with a bit of hot sauce in the steamer. I don't eat tartar, but could live on spicy coctail sauce. ~Mandy

    Drinking Too Much Post Op?

My post-op for the first 72 hours was a medicine cup (1 oz)every 15 mins. This was to make sure I was getting my liquids in. 4 oz an hour, 16 hours equals 64 oz a day. I was doing that plus some. When I asked about the instruction sheet, I was told that they tell people small amounts frequently so that you don't feel overwhelmed. Also some people are very swollen after banding and even sipping can be difficult. I know a few bandsters that have had problems even getting water down the first day or so. I am sure you are fine. I was drinking a 20 oz bottle of propel every 2 hours or so, and my pouch is fine. My surgeon's theory was the more fluids the better, it gets the anesthesia out faster and keeps you hydrated. ~Mandy

    Can't eat bread!

I can't eat rice, Pasta or bread. I can however have wheat crackers. I eat my chicken salad, tuna salad and egg salad on crackers. I like wheat thins, or light Ritz. I have 4 or 5 crackers and 6-8 oz of salad. Lat month I had half of a grilled cheese sandwich and called the next day to schedule a fill, knowing it was needed. When I went in for the fluro, I was "wide open". I was indeed ready for a fill. My hubby still teases me that he is gonna tell me band doc that I had a grilled cheese sandwich, knowing that bread is forbidden. Pasta and rice are instant pain for me, rice caused me a 4 hour PB one time, I have sworn off rice for life. For those that say it's too soon for the foods you are trying, I was only on liquids for 1 week, then mushies for a week and then soft graduating to solids over the course of the next week. At 3 1/2 weeks out I was eating meatloaf and rotisserie chicken. Each doctor gives different post-op diets, stick to what you were given. ~Mandy

Weight loss with Fish vs, Poultry and Beef

I eat more fish than anything else, and my weightloss has stalled. I do eat red meat, and chicken but more fish/seafood. I love grilled shrimp and blackened catfish is one of my favorites. I am just 20ish pounds from goal and I am sure that these last pounds are going to be hard to lose, but I am also sure I can do it. I am curious about the fish theory....please keep us updated. ~Mandy
  17. Until you see the doc, make sure you drink PLENTY of water. I would do what so many others have suggested, liquids for a few days, then mushies, then solids. Aloe juice may taste bad but it works, it soothes the throat quickly. (make sure it's really cold) If you want to give it a week or so, go ahead but don't wait months, I did that and it only stalled my weightloss and caused me more pain and misery than nessary. My weightloss stalled, when I finally gave in and went for an unfill the doc said I was putting my band at risk by being too tight. He believes that increases the chance of erosion. A slight unfill may be what you need, or giving your throat and pouch a rest may do the trick. Take care of yourself. ~Mandy

    DisneyWorld Anyone?

Try checking www.lapband.com for a list of local surgeons. Call until you find one, I know there are several great surgeons there, as we have several very happy bandsters here from those areas. Look in the Florida page for local members. ~Mandy
  20. I started with 75% regular coffee and 25% decaf for a week, then did 50/50 for a week then 75% decaf and 25% regular. Now I drink decaf if I drink it. I usually live on hot tea with splenda and a splash of lowfat creamer. ~Mandy

    Apricots HURT Any suggestions PLEASE

I would be worried that in this case the warm liquids would rehydrate the dried fruit and make them swell even more. Scary, I avoid dried foods at all cost. ~Mandy

    Ugh...a rather personal question

I drink 8 oz of Keifer everyday. I am doing 16oz a day right now because I am on antibiotics, and want to prevent stomach problems. You can find Keifer in the yogurt section of the dairy department. It comes in lowfat as well. ~Mandy

    Tortillas?

I am ok with tortilla chips, but regular tortillas are a huge no no. They get gummy and get stuck. They also seem to swell. My general rule is that if it swells in a cup of Water, it's more than likely gonna get stuck. Bread, tortillas, rice, Pasta. None of these work for me. I have crackers with lunch meats, or Soup and don't miss the other things at all. ~Mandy P.S. I gave up my fave...grilled cheese, but nothing taste as good as being thin feels. ~M
