Keeping it a secret? Anyone else

Hi! I told my doctor I wanted this confidential, so when they filled out the paper there was no mention of gastric surgery at all. It was just mentioned that I would be out for a procedure and when my return date would possibly be. Good luck on your journey!

    Psych Evaluation

My evaluation began with a few general questions, "Why are you doing this?", "What are your goals?" Then my "evaluator", had a lap top and had me answer about 100 questions that tallied up my answers to see how successful I would be after I had this surgery. Then we discussed a few of my answers, and my goals. I was there for about an hour and a half. I've heard there are definitely different requirements of the psychiatric evaluation depending on the psychiatrist. Mine said my results determined I would have a lot of success. I think I agree now, but in the beginning I wasn't so sure ! was really nervous when I got there, but he was great and made me feel really comfortable. He even had a friend's dog in with us (he was dog sitting), so it definitely eased the tension. He asked if I wanted him to put the dog in the other room, but I figured the more attention I gave to the dog, the less attention on me haha.

    Husband

I would put on a sappy romantic movie. That usually sent mine running to another room lol.
  6. Everyone who sees me now says I look a lot younger. I'll take it!

    Drain

Hi. I had a drain. The Dr. Told me it was a Dr' s preference whether to use a drain or not. My Dr. believes (amoung other things) it helps with a faster recovery. I know the drain was extremely painful for me because it overfilled once. Some people have no issues, I was not one of those people. It hurt like HE-double hockey sticks when they removed mine. The doctor was lucky he didn't warn me first before he yanked it out. My reflex would have been to smack him if he was closer...luckily he moved. I had the drain removed after a week, I felt 99% better once it was out. I've had no issues at all in recovery.

    Driving after surgery

Same here. Once I was off the pain killers could drive. Because of the pain from my drain, I didn't drive until 2 weeks after surgery.

All my requirements and approvals are below on my signature line. It didn't take long afterward all the requirements. Waiting for the actual date to come seemed like forever! Good luck on your journey.

    Never Hungry

My body has finally got its own schedule. I eat every 3 hours. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and a few healthy Snacks. Otherwise I feel extremely weak and my vision goes blurry. It's crazy. My meals are not large at all, I have my designated little bowl for my meals, and have my snacks available (if I choose to have one). I take a soft cooler to work and keep it in the fridge. Then I have plenty of options for breakfast/lunch snacks. Prior to this is I wasn't hungry, and had to MAKE myself eat. A friend of mine, who is just thin by nature would always tell me when we went out she had to eat every three hours or she felt sick. I could not relate until now. Now I get it.

    Sooooo tired!

Hi, after my surgery I felt great. Not tired at all. At about month 5-6 I was soooo tired. I went to my Dr. and they ran all my labs and didn't find anything that would explain. My B labs were high so I actually had to cut back on B-12 & B1. I went to my regular doctor and she suggested maybe I adjust my diet, sometimes food allergies can have an effect. I found out it was the nuts. I have nut allergies (lethargic and later I developed hives). I'm not saying this could be what's wrong with you, but possibly it could be something your eating that you can longer tolerate. I can't do protein shakes because of the milk, and don't like the almond or soy options. Which isn't a big deal because my Dr. would rather I got my protein from food rather than shakes. Hopefully you can find out what's going on soon.
  13. I was invited to a birthday party at a restaurant amount 2 months after my surgery. I looked online at the menu too. I decided I was going to stick with soup. I got lucky, they had clam chowder that day. I ordered the soup and of course everyone asked how it was etc. I said it was great, but since I could only eat a handful I just stopped eating and started up conversations. When anyone asked why I didn't finish I just told them I ate before I came, and I guess I was still full , but I was definitely saving it for later. I've become really good at eating out and making up excuses now :0.

    Salad?

I was craving salads during post op. When I was finally cleared for salads I ate them all the time (small portions of course), and come to find out that my body has now created an intolerance to lettuce. My body can't break it down very well, and in turn I am susceptible to developing kidney stones. So I had to back off salads (1 or 2 a week). Still love my salads regardless. In addition to that I developed a nut allergy after the surgery. Certain nuts (which I need to go take labs to find out), break my skin OUT (hives & itching). Never had these issues before the surgery, but I definitely don't regret the surgery one bit. Now I just have to be a little more careful with what I eat....even more so.

I'm done telling folks. They don't get it

Agreed. Unless someone has walked in your shoes, they just won't understand.
  18. It's probably not the worst comment I've received, but it was a little offensive: "Are you sick? You're melting away, you need to eat." As they push trays of fatty, fried foods in my face. Uh, no thanks. That's how I ended up 265 pounds. One person told me my head looked big. WOW! It doesn't matter if your fat or skinny. People can be just plain rude.

Keeping it a secret? Anyone else

I didn't tell anyone but my mother, and that was only because I needed her to pick me up from the hospital, and watch my son. She was very supportive, but believe me if it was up to me nobody would know. It's my business, nobody else's. I have no regrets. I just tell people I'm watching what I eat. When I go out to eat with friends, I lie and say "Man, I shouldn't have ate before I came", after only eating a few bites. It will be hard with her living with you, you may have to come clean. My own mother (although supportive), was acting like the flippin food police! Are you sure you can eat that? Can you eat that now? Uhg, I finally had to tell her to cut it OUT!

    Wow

Yup! I had that encounter too. Underwear sagging, skin sagging. I thought, "Oh HE!! No, I did not walk out of the house in this!?!?". I still have issues shopping because I don't feel like I'm a 10 (from a 20), but when I go grab a pair of jeans I don't want to disappoint myself when they dont fit lol. Even my 10's are getting baggy now. It's so crazy! I don't know about you guys, but I've never been this small (maybe in middle school, that doesn't count haha). It really takes some time to get used to!

    New Obsessions!

My new obsession is make-up! I never really cared, but now I love to buy it. I only wear it on the weekends so I have more time to "perfect it". I've also become obsessed with jeans. My favorite are Lucky Brand. They actually hug my butt! Definitely worth the price.....although I only buy them on sale. I still can't wrap myself around spending $100-$200 for jeans.

    Whats a reasonable goal

Hi! I originally based my goal on where my Dr. said my weight should be (150). Now that I am at 160, I realize that I am completely comfortable here. My Dr. said they would like me at 150, but it's what I am comfortable with. I am currently a size 8-10, and I'm feeling like I am too small (I NEVER thought I would say that), my friends, and family are concerned I am too small (and look sick). I think after I tone up it will all look better. My collar bone sticks out, it's pretty gross. Everyone wears their weight differently. My Mom didn't believe me when I told her I was 160lbs. She said she wished she carried weight like that lol. She thought I was a size 4-6. I would initially pick a goal your Dr. advises and revisit in the future. Good luck to you!!! I wish you nothing but success.
  23. Absolutely. There were some very bad days!!! Just make sure to stay hydrated. I swear that is where a lot of my weight loss came from.
  24. No, I did not get my allotted protein (from liquids). My surgeon wanted me to focus on staying hydrated, and getting my fluids in. Later on, there were days when I didn't get my protein in. When I went in for my labs a few months back they said my protein levels were actually really good. My doctor had me focusing on getting my protein from food, rather than protein shakes.
