We're adopting locally. She moved in in March 2006, so has been with us for awhile. She was on foster care for awhile until the court stuff was finished with her birth parents. Now we are just awaiting the final court date to make the adoption final. That should be in Sept. My son absolutely adores her. We were very concerned on how he would respond because he is a bit mentally challenged and doesn't like change. However, he completely surprised everyone. He is so protective of her and affectionate, caring and .... bossy just like a big brother should be. She has completely bonded to us, so that there is no question that she's part of our family. The funny thing is she looks so much like me, that people would never know I'm not her biological mother.
  2. Hi Donna, I'm getting banded by Dr. Yau on July 26th at 1pm. I want to have my port placed in the bikini area, so hope he will agree.

Nurse76: My name is Kathy. I live in London, Ontario, Canada. That is about 2 hours from Toronto. I'm 41 years old, married to a wonderful man and have 1 biological son and a soon to be adopted daughter. My son is 9 and my daughter is 3. I work in the food industry as a Marketing manger. I love where I work and what I do. I originally wanted to get banded 7 years ago, but chickened out. Now, weighing 285 lbs (when I started), I'm set to get banded on July 26th.

I live in London, Ontario which is in Canada about 2 hours from Toronto. It is very humid... I hate humidity... sucks the life right out of you. I've had my A/C on since May 1st, and don't plan on turning it off until fall. I am looking forward to our surgery date... it means the end of this awefull pre-op diet. I've been on it for 3 days and have lost 9 lbs, but only because it is so horrible. I feel nausious several times per day, and am starving.

I've decided to tell people I have to have my hiatal hernia fixed. It's not a lie, as I've just learned that my surgeon fixes these while he is installing the lapband. My biggest issue is that I work in a food company in marketing, which means a lot of taste testing. Now that I've started my pre-op diet, I'm not eating normally. Plus, when I have the surgery, I'm not going to be moving very fast at work (I only get 2 days off). So I needed something to tell my co-workers, otherwise the questions would become difficult to handle. I'm also a huge "over sharer", so not saying anything would be very strange. I've already told a few people about the "hernia" operation, and it seems to work.

Hi Everyone, haven't been here since Monday... no way can I catch up. Lynnett, I hope you're doing well. Is there a question of the day? Peaches, how'd the surgery go? It was nice meeting you face to face on Tuesday. I hope everyone's surgery this week went well, and all are recovering. I started my pre-op diet today :cry

Thanks Lynette, but I have already had my gall bladder out several years ago... and I think I might have told a few people this.

This should really be penned as a condition. One that I've got big time. I've eaten so much "last hurrah" things lately that I went up in weight by 5 lbs. It was water retention, which I've lost again, but still... OMG. Two days left before pre-op, so what did I do tonight... my last Haagen-Dazs Mayan Chocolate ice cream. I've almost polished off the entire container, and feel sick. But this stuff is better than mediocer sex. Nothin's better than great (or "bad") sex... aka my user name!!! Oh DH, is it bedtime yet? Oh well... back to the ice cream.

Hi everyone. Is there a question today? If not, I have one... Someone mentioned a few days ago if we were telling people what we were doing. I had mentioned that I was not sharing it with people at work. However, I need to tell them something. So here's my question... What are you telling people who need to know you've had surgery (of some type), but not to worry them? I was thinking of hieatal hernia surgery. It can be done laproscopically, and I think would require a modified post-surgery diet. Any comments on this? Has anyone had this type of surgery... is it at all similar in recovery?

Hi Peaches, Looks like I will be at the TLBC tomorrow night for the nutrition/info session. So we get to meet in person. I have to go into TO for a meeting in the afternoon, so will stick around for the meeting. See you then,

What I am most thankful for... hmmm. I would say that I am thankful for my DH's love for me, even when I'm moody. I'm thankful that Children's Aid approved us to adopt, and gave us our little girl. I'm thankful for my son's smile, compassion, innocence and love. I'm thankful for my own strength of spirit, endurance, beauty (such a pretty face :whoo:) and resourcefullness. Finally, I'm thankful I had the most wonderful mother in the world, and wish so much that she was still here to share in my life. Ok, a little deep, but true.

Hi Everyone. Just logged on... what's the question of the day? I've finished cleaning out the kitchen cupboards and boxing everything away. Now my brother and DH can start ripping out the cabinets tomorrow. Oh my God!!! I'm going to be without a kitchen for 2+ weeks!!!! Am I crazy. I'll be starting my pre-op diet on Thurs. so won't have to worry too much about food for myself, but my kids need to eat. I guess there's always takeout. I just finished a week of vacation so back to work tomorrow. I got to golf 3 times this week... which is more than I ever have in such a short time. We love this game... not very good at it, but its fun.

Ok, I've finally caught up. Next time I take a day off reading, I'll just skip to the end and ask Lynette :ranger: to fill me in on the topic of the day. Dini - Have you hit that man up side the head yet to get him in the right frame of mind? I think you're smart to take care of your emotional health right now, and to build your future. If he can't be there for you now when you need him so much, what does it say for the next time. Lynette - Oh you are doing so well. I'm kind of looking to your progress for my own guide (hopefully). My surgery is on a Thursday and I'll be back to work on the Monday, so have to hope I'll recover as quick. But like you... I'm going to milk it for all its worth at home... certainly did with the knee, so why not for this. :clap2::clap2: dmtjet - I love reading your posts. The pencil thing had me in stiches. Good luck to everyone who's on deck this week. I've started gutting my kitchen today, as we are renovating :clap2::clap2::clap2:. So for the next two weeks I'll be in renovation hell :faint: but I can't wait until its done. Wanted to do this before the surgery, so my surroundings would be Zen like. I'll log on again tomorrow night. Sleep well.

Hi Frustrated... my band date buddy. I'm so sorry for your experience with the Dr. 6 years ago my girlfriend was banded. She was one of the first in Canada at the time. Her BMI was 35, and the surgeon wouldn't do it unless she was 40... so she did the exact same thing... ate her face off for 3 months. Today she's 100 lbs lighter and in great health.

Wow, that was a long read. 9 pages in less than 24 hours. I'm on vacation this week so can login more frequently than when I'm at work. So will have to resign to the fact that I won't be able to keep up with all of the posts. To everyone banded today... I hope you are all doing well. To all on deck... good luck! I know you are all a little scared, but we all know its the right decision and you will be great. Am I embarrased about being overweight... YES, but not always. I'm embarrased when I have to fly (especially when I sit beside my boss). When I'm at a fancy party and I know I don't look as nice as I would like to. But embarrasment is not the main issue for me. I'm disappointed in myself and feel like a failure. I have a lot of things going for me. I picked a wonderful man to share my life with. We have two beautiful children. I have a great career that I love, and I am a fairly intelligent person. So everytime I lose weight just to gain it back, I feel like such a failure. This has happened so many times, that the failure is so ingrained. It even interfears with my sex life. I know my husband loves me and is so attracted to me (regardless of what I look like... big, small or whatever). I sometimes just can't imagine why he is attracted to me, so I don't feel like doing the nasty :phanvan Pretty sad. I also don't think losing all the weight will miracalously change my own self image. I think that will take a bit of time and self analysis. Hate to end this on a down note... so I'll share my fun news with you. I had messed up my knee at the beginning of June by tripping over our dog (middle of the night, a little drunk...:faint:you get the picture). I've been in physiotherapy since. My DH and I took up golf this summer for the first time (I used to when I was a teenager, but not since). But due to the knee injury, I couldn't golf. Today, we went out to play a round at a beautiful course. I golfed 115 on a par 73. It felt great... no knee problems and spent the entire day with my DH and kidless!!! 115 might not be great, but for me I'll take it. All for now

Ok, I really want mine in the bikini area... but have already had my consultation at TLBC, and didn't meet Dr. Yau. I don't see them again until surgery day. How do I get this request across to him?

How long ago? Are you in Toronto now? I used to live there for about 10 years, until I moved here in 2001 (although this is where I grew up).

Ok, I'll start this by saying I don't know how things with in the States with insurance, might be the same... but in Canada, it doesn't make any sense. OHIP, which is our Provincial Goverment Medical insurance, will cover the cost of Gastric Bypass or the DS surgery if you have a BMI of 40+ or 35+ and co-morbidities. They will even pay to send us the the States to have it done quicker, as the waiting list in Canada for this is about 2+ years. However, they consider the lapband to be "experimental", so they won't cover it. They will pay $35K or more for the other surgeries, that are much more invasive and risky, but not the $16K for the lapband. The government also conducted a study of the various WLS types to determine which was most appropriate. In the end, their study concluded that all three types had good results and should be covered... so why only the most risky and expensive :mad::mad::heh::heh::heh::heh: I guess I'm just bitter that an aquaintance of mine had the gastric bypass surgery completely paid for, and I have to pay for mine. Oh well!
