Banding an Competitive BJJ
globetrotter replied to Huckleberry Gal's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I box and practice judo, I was banded 2.5 years ago and havn't had a problem. the first few times I was punched on my port I was really scared that I would have a problem, but I figured that I didn't want to change my lifestyle over it. you shouldn't have a problem. if you have any specific questions, let me know. -

Question On Flying
globetrotter replied to mljalways's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I fly alot - 300-400K miles a year, and got banded 18 months ago. the results can be unpredictable, some flights don''t effect me at all, some do. I always carry liquid protien, instant soup and oatmeal so that if I can't eat anything I have something to eat until I can get to my doctor. I've never had that bad a problem but I have had a half dozen times where I couldn't eat for 2-3 days. I pretty much don't eat on flights, but I do eat a little. -
I do krav, and had the surgury almost a year ago. I am still very cautious of my port, but I grapple and roll around and spar without any problems so far. I really do worry that I will flip my port, though. but no problems so far
-
you are probrably looking at plastic surgury if you want a 6 pack at this point. I would give up the dream, and enjoy where you are.

had swarma last night, very very tasty - I stared on an empty stomach, and had maybe a tablespoon full, chewed well and immitidatly started to slime and had to vomit. so, I would say that this takes the prize - this is the absolute worst food for me. how about you?

I've lost 70 pounds in 10 months

please do a search on this - it seems that every week there is a thread about it and I end up posting a long post. short story - it is hit or miss. I fly several times a week on average, and some flights it is no problem, some I can't eat solid food for a few days.

Has anyone had a glass of beer after being banded?
globetrotter replied to jen2learn's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I love beer. beer is the closest thing that I have ever had to a religion - I have been to the octorberfest in germany a dozen years, I have gone on all sorts of beer pilgrameges. all done, now. when I first got banded, before I got filled, I drank a few beers - but they were beers that didn't have added carbination, and I drank it in very small glasses (6 once) , slowly. then, after my second fill, I tried a beer (a standard comercial beer) and threw up almost immidiatly. I am not trying that again in the near future -
Sleep Study -- Can someone translate these results?

Travel Post Op? Is two weeks too soon?
globetrotter replied to wsw27's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
there are abunch of threads about this. I traveled less than 10 days after surgury, a business trip combined with taking my wife and 3 kids (including twin 1 year olds) to disneyworld. I had no problem. in the 9 months since then, I have flown probrably 12 trips (maybe 100 legs) without any problems. the biggest problem is that flying will effect the tightness of the band, and in an unpredictable way. that is, 9 legs out of 10, there will be little or no effect, and then that 10nth time I will be very tight for 2-3 days, and I have no way of telling - it isn't an issue of smaller planes, for instance. I don't plan on eating airplace food, unless it is very good business (for instance, some airlines serve soup in business). I carry protien powder, instance soup and tuna, as well as wasabi peas and beef jerkey. for business meals, I eat a lot of crab cakes - I find that most steak houses and fish resteraunts have them and I get an appetizer as a main course and soup as an appetizer. the best business meal I have discovered is brazilian grill - nobody really notices how much or little you eat. -
soft breads - I have tried bites from muffins and donuts, once each, even when I had a loose fit. one bite killed me swarma - I don't know why, but this gave me the worse reaction that I have had rare beef, chicken, any type of thick cut meat
-
strangly enough, the food that seem to be easiest for me are foods that I thought would be hardest eggs rice with some kind of gravy or salsa soft tropical fruits
-
I have to eat a lot of meals with people I work with and customers. it can be pretty akward because I don't really want to discuss why I am not eating. the week I went out to a brazilian steak house - this is the best possible business meal for a bander. the idea is, waiters walk around with spits of various types of meat, and you choose what you want. 1. nobody really notices how much you actually take 2. everybody has food on their plate that they don't eat, so nobody notices that you haven't really eaten the food on your plate 3. you can nibble on a little meat, and try several different types, so you can enjoy it, too 4. the waiters take away your plate and replace it when ever you want, so it really is very hard for anybody to notice if you eat or not I am thinking that dim sum would be a good option too, for all of the same reasons.

Flying with the Band??
globetrotter replied to BrendaLH's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I fly all the time for work - literally 120 legs or more a year, including a lot of 8-12 hour legs. 1. about 1 in 10 times the pressure will effect my band, and I will be very tight after the flight for 2-3 days. I haven't been able to figure out a pattern - it isn't the size of the aircraft 2. maybe 1/3 to half of flights, during the flight, I will be very tight 3. I flew the week after getting banded, no problem with the stiches or anything 4. I fly with cup a soup, outmeal and tuna, as well as liquid protien bullets and protien powder. I have had trips where all I was able to eat for 10 days was liquids and mushies. but I have also had trips where I flew 7 or 8 legs and didn't have any problem at all. -

Share ideas, What did you eat today ?
globetrotter replied to kimmom's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I'm on a 3 week business trip, so I brought with me tuna, cup of soup, one once envelopes of beef jerky and one once envelopes of wasabi peas. I have been eating a lot of soup in resteraunts, and fruit juice. also cheese - I find that I can order a cheese plate and just eat about 1/3 of the cheese, with nothing. a little bit of stewed meat. if I can't find stuff to eat in the resteraunts that I go to for my business meals, I have a cup of soup or some tuna. I have a pretty tight restection right now, and I think that the flights are also playing havoc with my restriction. -
first time, business lunch with another bander
globetrotter posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
the hardest part of my band is that I have maybe 20 business meals a month with people I work with and customers. I have to work hard to appear to be eating, without eating too much. had a lunch meeting with a woman today, as well as with a guy who reports to me. my guy told us that we had each been banded, so it was a very interesting lunch - since all of us knew that the two of us were banded, we didn't have to play around with our food, and we both ate in a similar way. -
ok, I just got my third fill, after loosing 50 pounds. until now, I only threw up 2 or 3 times in the past 6 months, and it might not have been really throwing up, it may have been more "sliming" or PB. in the 5 days since my last fill (which is actually only 3 days of eating solid food) I have thrown up maybe 5 times - again, maybe the better way to discribe it is PB or sliming. effectivly, about half the time when I eat something solid, and it has been a wide variety of different things, afer about 3 or 4 tablespoons full, I feel a pain in my chest, and feel shortness of breath, and then I feel like I really need to burp but can't. then I go to the toilet, and puke up some thick white liquid. 1. can this type of "vomiting" hurt my band or stretch out my stomoch? 2. is this going to pass? or is the trick to learn what I can tolerate and what I can't? thanks
-
thanks - unfortunatly, to add to the complications, I am traveling internationally for the next two weeks, I had a fill on Thursday and fly out on Saturday night, before I returned to real solid foods. so I will have to be very very careful until I can get back for an unfill.

discovered the absolute worst food for me
globetrotter replied to globetrotter's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
sort of like gyros, meat on a vertical spit carmalized by a fire on the side and then sliced into little fragments. while gyros are usually moist, good swarma is usually dry, which seems to have been the problem. -

When going to a restaurant, what do you order?
globetrotter replied to laniayala's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
when I go out to eat for business, I usually order a crab cake appetizer for a main course. very easy on the band, and you can push it aorund the plate and it looks like you ate everyting.
