NWWLS - new post-op diet?
TulipStar replied to BluesByrd's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Blues, Your post op diet is just like mine. Days 1-7 liquid Days 8-14 mushies Days 15 on: all foods as tolerated I followed this diet, but I did extend the "mushies" phase by about 3 days. I still eat a lot of Soup and just have to watch what I eat. When I do eat solid food, I try to just eat a little bit. Unfortunately I have no restriction and that causes me to be able to eat like I was before, so I have to be careful about what goes into my mouth and write down everything. Whatever you decide to do, you will be fine. Good luck!! -
Banded And Fustrated!!
TulipStar replied to REDGIRL's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I hear you. I gained 3lbs when I started back on mushies. I worked so hard to lose those 3 lbs again and then I hit plateau for about a week. I am so careful about what I eat (My dr's po starts on all food day 15), count all my calories, but my body doesn't want to lose weight. Eating 1000 calories a day or less is what has done it for me to help me continue to lose. Also, I walk 2 miles every day or do 45 min on the elliptical. My Dr. told me that I would gain weight until my first fill. Can you believe that?! He told me not to worry about it bc after my fill, the weight would fall off. I informed him that I had already gained 3 lbs since I started mushies (started mushy on day 7). He said it was just my metabolism. -
My stomach is making a lot of noise!
TulipStar replied to cookielover's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What you are experiencing is normal. Just be patient!! Your body just went through a major surgery and it is trying to heal itself. I was expecting to be back to jogging the 2nd day. Boy, was I wrong! when I would walk just a little bit, I would get out of breath and breathe hard. It was so hard, bc I am always a fast walker, but after surgery I walked so SLOW! I promise you that it will get better. Now I am 3 weeks po and I feel sooo good! I can work out for 60 minutes, no problem and the stomach noise are now from when I eat food...my stomach trying to digest it. (my dr's po diet is all food starting on day 15). You will be fine! Just take it easy and relax. -
Tips to reduce swelling?
TulipStar replied to mandi78's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine didn't go down until 3 weeks po (this week). It was soo frustrating to have tight pants after I lost 15lbs. You can also try a natural swelling reducer called bromelain. They have it at the Vitamin shoppe or any other health food store. I took it for another surgery I had to reduce swelling. -
How long did it take your incision to scab over?
TulipStar replied to mandi78's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I don't think my incisions ever scabbed up. I pulled my steri strips off around day 13. and the incision was closed. I have had other surgery too, and I never had any scabbing. -
Hi everyone! Today I had my first post-op appt, I am 15 dpo and it went pretty well. I was waiting in the waiting room with a lady who had surgery the same day as me and she said that she is not hungry at all, and she is loving it. I am completely oppposite than her and told her that I am hungry ALL the time!! My dr said that it is normal to be hungry by now, and that is bc the fat under my band has shrunk and that my band is not filled and loose now. He said that I can schedule my 1st fill for October 8 and that after that, I will feel like I did after surgery, very full all the time. My dr also said that I might gain a couple lbs between now and my fill!!!:faint: I told him that I have already gained 3lbs since I have been on my mushie phase. He said it is just my metabolism slowing down and trying to hang on to all the calories since I was only on liquid before. He said not to worry about gaining a few pounds bc it will happen!! So, now I can start on a regular full diet, with a limitation of around 1200 calories. I can eat whatever I want, no more mushie or Soups are required. I am really beating myself up over these 3 lbs that I gained back since I lost it after my surgery. I have even upped my exercise and have been walking 2 miles everyday, but I haven't been losing anymore. If my port area still wasn't sore, I wouldn't even KNOW that I have surgery, bc I can eat ANYTHING withouth any problem. I am keeping my fingers crossed for the 1st fill and hopefully some restriction.

When you woke up from anesthesia.....
TulipStar replied to marieze's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have only been under twice in my life (within the last 4 years both times) and it always goes like this: I wake up, I am crying tears and I feel pain and the nurse asks why I am crying , but I can't really speak bc my throat is so dry. I choke out an "ouch" and they know why. Then when I am in recovery it is amazing how I am aware of everything going on and can hear everything, but I feel like I am in a coma. My last surgery (not lapband), the nurses couldn't figure out what kind of surgery I had done, so they were standing there in front of me, talking about me, where to put me, what meds should they give me, etc and I could hear everything, but couldn't speak up or open my eyes. It was quite frightening!! -
How soon before you went back to work after surgery?
TulipStar replied to crazy4jags's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Everyone is different and I had heard stories about people going back in to work the next day, well let me tell you, that was not the case with me! I am only 29, and I have a generally high tolerance to pain (I have had surgery before and refused morphine & the pain killers and only took tylenol). So I was quite surprised when this surgery had me down for so long. (in my mind, I thought I would be back to yoga, running and step classes on day 3, but was surprised when I still couldn't get out of bed by myself by day 4). I think that by day 6 I felt that I would be able to go back to work. I went back to work on day 7, but it was still hard for me, so I worked from home most of that first week back. The most pain I had was around the port area bc they stitch it to the muscle, so I had to be really careful about getting up from sitting and sitting. I couldn't sleep in my own bed until about day 6 (slept in a recliner). Good luck!! -
I am a project manager based in Irving, Tx. I work from home most of the time or am traveling. I just moved here from Tampa, FL 1 year ago.

WHo has used Dr. Marsden in Hurst, Tx
TulipStar replied to judybellyband's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals

I was just banded by Dr. Marsden and I love him. He is a really friendly, down to earth guy and when you meet with him he actually takes the time to talk to you.

I have a friend that was banded by Dr. Smith and he likes him as well. they are both really good dr's.

There are a lot of support groups in the DFW area that you can go to, and you don't have to be a patient of the Dr. (I know Dr. Smith limits to his patients only, but there are many who dont). Plus my friend who goes to Dr. Smith doesn't go to his support groups bc he didn't like them.
Oh yeah, he uses the new AP band. -
port site pain and burning post surgery
TulipStar replied to alandork's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the same pain still after 2 weeks post op. I am nearing 3 weeks and it seems to have subsided. I posted the same type of question a couple weeks ago and I got some feedback that it goes away after 6 weeks. Good luck and feel better! -
It is a father/son team of WLS surgeon. I have only seen them do the bypass.
-
My Dr said 6 weeks bf I go back to the gym. However, I can walk right now. I walk about 2 miles a day and I am very anxious to go back to the gym. I love to workout-- especially aerobics classes. It makes me feel like I am a backup dancer for Britney! hahaha

Anyone with United Healthcare get LB?
TulipStar replied to saravalintine's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have UHC choice plus and they had certain restrictions to cover lapbad. -5 year history of BMI over 40 or over 35 w/ 1 co-morbidity. -Center of excellence Hospital (in this case, the hospital was over 1 hour from where I live in a small, small city in west Texas and I live in Dallas) It took me over 11 weeks to get approved. My BMI was not over 40 for the full 5 years bc I lost some weight with diet pills, so they required that I prove I had a co-morbidity during those few years. what a pain!! People lose a different rates, but my dr says 1-2 lbs per week is average and safe (you should keep it off longer too) Good luck!! -
Congratulations!!!! I have appealed insurance before and won, so I know that it feels like the ultimate victory on a rollercoaster of emotions!
-
I also fear that I am not losing enough. However, we have to remember that this is not a "race". Slower losers tend to keep it off longer. I have only lost 11 lbs since surgery, 7 lbs pre-op diet. AND I gained back 3 lbs while I was on mushies, but have lost it again. I understand how frustrating it is. My dr even told me that I would GAIN a few lbs before I had my first fill. I was like, WHAT!!! :omg: Just remember everyone is different, our metabolisms, our fat to muscle ratio etc. so everyone will lose differently and try not to compare to others.

It felt like there was a ball stuck in my stomach. Like a lump... I just waited it out. It passed after about 3 hours. It wasn't so much painful as it was uncomfortable. I was at work and I couldn't leave so I just stuck it out. It just passed in the last 30 minutes and now my stomach is grumbling like crazy. It must be doing extra work to digest those carbs. I did eat it in one bite, but to be honest I have had NO restriction and have been eating like I always have and haven't had any problems up to this point. I think normally I take smaller bites than most. I usually tend to try to eat pretty healthy (no fried foods, lots of protein) so I think I will keep trying to avoid the blatant bad carbs and processed foods.

Ladies - What Size Clothes to Cross Your Legs?
TulipStar replied to JulieNYC's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have NEVER been able to cross my legs in my whole life! I was an obese child, so I was always chunky. I am an apple, but still my thighs won't cross. I have no problem sitting indian style on the floor, but have never been able to cross sitting in a chair. I can't wait for that!!!! to me, being able to cross my legs is truly success!!! -
Last week on Oprah, Dr. Oz was on the show and doing some "myth busters" if you will. They did a case study on two twin women and gave one of them water (8 oz every hour, totaling 64 oz) and the other twin got no water. The end result was that both of their vitals and Vitamin levels, body readings & functionality were the same. Dr. Oz explained that we don't need as much water as we think bc the body gets water from food. And the required amount to keep the body going is much less than previously thought. I am still for drinking a lot of water. If anything, it helps curb hunger!

LOL! Once I do, I will let you know! I have been on solids for 2 days and the only "solid" I have eaten is a salad! I am too afraid of weight gain and I really really want this to work!
-
I know how u feel about eating too much. That's exactly how I feel. I am 2 weeks po and I am allowed to eat normal food...that means I am allowed to eat ANYTHING! I have still kept it to just mushies & Soups though, bc I don't really feel too comfortable starting to eat regular foods just yet. However, I have had a bite of a turkey sandwich and that went down fine and I have been eating lots of Soup. The problem is now that I have been off of liquids and back on mushies/real food, I have stopped losing weight. I have upped my exercise to a 2 mile walk per day (up from 1 mile) but every morning that scale inches up by a few ounces. I finally asked my dr what I am doing wrong and he said nothing... that I should expect to gain some weight before I have my first fill (sched for Oct. 8). I am mortified-- I feel like I have no restriction and that if I wasn't sore from the surgery in the port area, I would not even KNOW that I had surgery, bc I can eat everything and large quantities and guzzle Water. Ok, enough of my rant. I will wait until I get my fill and hope then I will feel some restriction!

I am not a veg, but primarily eat like one and always have. I depend a lot on eggs (which you said get stuck for you). I am like you and have always found it challenging when eating high protein/low carb bc I don't eat meat. And like you I usually depend on cheese. Also, if you get the right kind of Protein shake, it tastes like a milkshake and is sooo yummy. I know there are a lot of bad Protein shakes out there, but I have found a good one. I drink a protein shake by EAS "Iron Tek" in chocolate flavor. 8 oz milk and 4 ice cubes in my magic bullet and it is like a chocolate milkshake...yummmmmmy. With milk it has about 31 grams of protein and 11 carbs (9 from the milk) and about 200 calories.

About 10 inches under my port scar I keep getting a stabbling pain, then it feels like a burning sensation. It is very painful and I immediately have to try to straighten up to relieve the pain. This has been going on for 3 days now. I am 11 days PO. Does anyone know what this is? could i have nerve damage? It is quite bothersome and hurts when I am sitting or bend a certain way. It also happens first thing in the morning when I wake up and try to get out of bed. Today it happened when I was driving and I almost had to pull over.

Painful sensation under port
TulipStar replied to TulipStar's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I post a complaint about the pain and what happens? it goes away!! just like when something is wrong and I make a dr. appt...then it goes away! I am happy it went away bc it was sooo annoying. Based on everyone's responses it seems that it is normal and part of the healing process. I feel like I should be able to run in the olympics again but have to remember that I am still recovering from surgery! -
HOoray for mushies! I started mushies last Monday and I was sooo excited to have mashed potatoes every night for dinner. The downside is that I stopped losing weight when I went to mushies. so, I have upped my exercise (walking) to hopefully continue to lose weight. I am going on day 14 and I get to start to eat regular food again. I can't wait to eat a sandwich!!
