I am not a seafood eater, so my PA said I could add canned chicken in the mechanical stage of my diet that starts on Friday. Does anyone have any good recipes for canned chicken? The only thing I ever tried it in pre-op was a buffalo chicken dip.. Which has a ton of stuff that is no bueno! I have always thought it smelled like Tuna and was a turned off by it! But, I need protein and I am taking it where I can get it!

Low protein intake can throw everything off. Protein is the building block for every single cell of your body. If you are protein deficient you will be tired. Long term this is why people lose their hair. Nails become brittle muscles begin to break down. Now with that being said I did not get all of my protein in the first few weeks. It was nearly impossible. I have never been fatigued though. But I also am not doing extremely low carb. I get on average 40-50 carbs a day from milk, fruit and veggies. Have you had any labs drawn from your surgeon?

I ordered a sample pack of the nectar flavors from the company. My favorite so far is the fuzzy navel. I mixed it with peach, orange, mango and pineapple juice and water. So yummy... Also the lemonade with water and throw a few frozen strawberries in the blender. Crystal sky is ehh ok... Caribbean cooler was ok. Very coconutty. Again mixed that with pineapple juice and water. -
Pre-op I drank the RTD EAS carb control shakes. I would stick a straw in them... Drink about half, hold my breath while I stuck some peanut butter or almonds in my mouth. Then I would repeat. Never made me sick, unless I slowed myself to actually taste it. Post-op milk has been my best friend! I never drank milk pre-op. but when it goes you additional protein... I am all about some milk! I also use unjury. Love it! I add Pb2 and it kills the sweetness. Good luck to you!

One of the best lessons my Sleevilla has taught me to date.

Holy Crap! This is so me... I used to eat starburst and skittles in the same exact order. From least favorite to most favorite. Never would I eat a handful of skittles at once, because I could not detect the different flavors. Oh.. And the ribeye! I used to cut it all up and save the most tender fat surrounded piece for the very last bite. Did the same thing with shake n bake porkchops.. Crispy fat edges last! It was almost like I had a moment when finally eating my favorite part. It was like I stopped breathing momentarily so I could savor that taste! I am only one month out and my desire for food is still lurking around. I get so excited to eat something new. Then I get the first two bites and I am done with the excitement and I only finish because I know I need the protein! But I will say that is starting to die. Food is not my favorite thing anymore. It is not what my life revolves around.. This is a great feeling, but also very weird at the same time! -
Hey folks! I need some good meatball recipes. I made some tonight and they were really dry. I can no longer drink when's eat so dry food is no good!

Ok ladies... This is what I just threw together with my canned chicken. It taste pretty good and does not have that smell.... 4 oz canned chicken 1 tbsp of each of the following Green pepper Onion Peas and carrots 1 tsp of minced garlic 1/8 cup of canned mushrooms 1 package of chicken gravy ( I kind of guessed at how much of the veggies, I forgot to measure before I added, I am still a newbie.. Please forgive me) I opened the can of chicken and the smell knocked me out! Lol. I drained it and then rinsed it with Water. I then let it soak in some skim milk for about 10 minutes. I added the veggies in a skillet and let them begin to cook. I then added the chicken with some of the skim milk... Maybe 1/8 of a cup and the garlic to the veggies. I added some parsley, onion powder and salt and pepper to taste(not much salt because the gravy has quite a bit). I let the mixture cook down together. In a separate pan I made the packaged chicken gravy according to directions. After the majority of the liquid cooked down in the chicken mixture I mixed everything together. I added everything in my fitness pal and came up with the following... Makes 4 servings Amounts are per serving Calories:69 Fat:1 Carbs:6 Protein:7 Sodium:464( high I know) Potassium: 26 I am sure if you omit the peas and carrots, the carbs will reduce a bit. But for 7 grams of Protein.... I will take it. Plus it helps with my liquid intake.

I am a busy busy mom. When I am handling a daily routine, I am almost able to get in all of my protein. Not getting all my fluids in at all! I just realized that all I have a had all day long is 12 ounces of skim milk and maybe 2tsp of peanut butter, and maybe half a bottle of water. But I can't bring myself to eat most of the time. Especially when I am running a whole lot of errands. Then when I realize that I have not eaten... It is 11pm. And obviously there is no way for me to get what I need. Any suggestions? I am 3 weeks post-op?

I am also a nursing student. So day by day my schedule is never the same. School starts back next week. So I am hoping that having a semi normal schedule will make things better. I will be able to have my lunchbox with me, with choices of food. I am totally excited to eat some real meat! My classes are three hours long. So I would have to take things with me to eat throughout. Being in class for three hours will also help me with drinking my water. I will have a time limit to consume so much of it... I just ordered more unjury. My plan is to drink 2 shakes a day minimum and then fill in with food. Just got to get to that point. Cause right now I am struggling. Thanks for all of your advice.

Liquids and Proteins

I actually like the Unjury. I add pb2 to my shakes. Makes them more tolerable. -
Only once... That was yesterday morning. I took my multi with some Water. I guess it got stuck. I felt like I was going to throw up and even dry heaved twice. I was driving when this happened. I pulled over and got out and circled my car a few times and I was fine after that. Sometimes I can tell they get a little stuck and I just try and drink more to push it down. I do wait a few minutes in between each pill. In that few minutes I continue taking small sips. Just to keep things flowing.

I experienced this same exact thing. I was so flipping excited I ate half the egg rather quickly by using the size of bite that got me to 300lbs! Within a few minutes was hurting. My throat felt like it was collapsing. It was a burning. I couldn't swallow, I felt nauseous and even started sweating. So I took a drink of water to wash it down... And it got worse for a few seconds then let up! The next morning I was taking my multi-vitamin with water and got the same feeling... This time I was driving my son to daycare. And I gagged a few times like I was going to throw up... So I pulled over and got out and circled my car a few times and I was fine. Everyone advised me when I posted about my egg experience to walk walk walk.. I guess it helps move the food down. Since then I have been able to eat a whole egg over a 30 min time period with no problem. I just take very small bites and chew it really really well.

I was required to start all of my Vitamins right after surgery. Morning: Multi-Vitamin w/ zinc and sublingual B12 Lunch: Calcium 600 with 800 D and B1 Dinner: Calcium 600 with 800 D Bedtime: Iron 65mg and Vitamin C My surgeon also prescribed folic acid and prilosec. Luckily i had no co-morbitaties so the only daily med i take is for my ADHD and when I can start my BC again. I am almost 3 weeks out. I bought a weekly pill organizer that allows you to remove each day and take it with you. I take my morning ones before Breakfast. My lunch ones before lunch. My dinner before dinner and my bedtime at bedtime. This is not always at the same time everyday. I usually take them with something besides Water. Milk, juice, crystal light.. Whatever. It hides the taste a little bit. My multi and calcium are pretty large. the B1 is the most disgusting though. I am also super busy.. Single mom of a one year old and a full time nursing student. I feel your pain! Good luck!

one week post op in need of nutrition advice
Beth Kidd replied to miss_lalaaa's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Unjury offers a sample pack to try. I ordered it as well as a sample pack from nectar. The unjury chocolate is pretty tasty. Not sure if you are a peanut butter fan,but there is this awesome stuff called PB2. It is like a peanut butter powder. By adding it to my shakes it takes away that sweetness they all have. I mixed a scoop of unjury with 8 ounces of skim milk and 2 tbsp of the PB2. A total of 34 grams of protein! I drink it in two settings because my doc said we cannot absorb more than 25 grams of protein at once. -
I ordered the sample pack from unjury. I mixed the vanilla and the chocolate with skim milk and pb2. Could tolerate both! But looking into purchasing big tubs, isopure seems to have some great reviews too. Both are pricey, but that is not that big of an issue. Which is better tasting? And better for you?

I am new to this website and just wanted to introduce myself. I am 32 years old. My highest recorded weight was 302lbs. I have been over 250 for 10 years. I was always heavy, but learned to deal with it. I have a lot of self confidence and never let my weight stop me from doing anything, but the last two years have changed that part about me drastically. I had my son in Janurry of '12. 11 weeks later I had a nearly fatal car accident. I crushed both wrist, fractured my femur, broke my hip socket. Fractured a vertebra, nine cracked ribs, and a whole lot of bruises. After three surgeries, some plates and screws, and a blood transfusion. I was alive. I was non weight bearing on all three broken extremities for three months. I begin to try and walk on June 20th and left rehab using a cane three weeks later. A month later I started nursing school. As you can tell I am one determined person. The only thing that has ever beat me, is food! I decided to have the surgery for two reasons. The first is my son. I am a single mom.my son depends on me for everything. I have to set examples for him. I do not want him to have issue with food like I do. I want to be the mom that runs the field with him, not the one that sits in her nice comfy chair on the sidelines. I want to be as involved as I possibly can in his life. The second reason is joint pain. Since my right hip has been pieced back together with plates and screws, I am sure you can imagine I have a bit of joint pain and stiffness. My doc told me I would have to have a hip replacement in about 10 years but, if I did not lose weight it would be more like 5. So here I am! I had my surgery 07/25/2013. I am 17 days post-op. Everyday is a struggle right now. Protein is a devil and i am still strugling to fine one that i like. Going to start adding exercise in next week. School starts back in one week and my plate is always full! I want to thank you all in advance for sharing information with me! This journey is going to be a long one, and I am glad I can find support from those who have been in my shoes!

I also love the PB2! I can now tolerate the shakes. Great product!
