Protein sample packs, any?
Kindle replied to meyouus's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Unjury has sample kit on their website. Or check out Nashua Nutrition. They have dozens of protein powder single serving samples they sell for $1.95 each. You can usually find Syntrax Nectar single serving sample packs on Amazon and eBay. -
For the people actively Losing weight that track food...
Kindle replied to Elode's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It's definitely possible. I've never tracked or weighed what I eat, but I did do a couple spot calorie checks along the way....I was probably 600-800 calories from 1-3 months, 1000 calories by 3-4 months and 1200 by 6-7 months. I passed goal at 7 1/2 months and upped my intake to maintenance level which is 1400-1600 calories/day. I never made a conscious attempt to restrict calories, just ate when I was hungry and just until satisfied. These numbers reflect the changes in my sleeve's restriction. -
@@pinkD I think they're too thick and sweet, too. I mix the chocolate and strawberry 1/2 and 1/2 with milk and then they're perfect. I'm not a fan of the vanilla, but it works great as coffee creamer and to make chai tea.

Sorry to jump on this thread, as I was sleeved 12/20/13. But to answer this question...it was a good 2-3 weeks before I could comfortably wear my preop jeans. I had no pain, but my belly stuck out like I was pregnant.

Which Single Change Can You Make in 2015?
Kindle replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Oooo, to hell with exercise, I wanna switch my single change to this! -
This is YOUR journey, not your nut's. Has she had WLS? If not, then all she's doing is trying to fit you into one of her textbook molds. Seriously, it's not that hard to figure out what to eat. Read labels, research online and eat what's obviously healthy. Some people can do carbs, some can't. Some need to limit calories, some don't. Some do the whole low fat thing, some dont. Some do sugar free everything, some stick with the real thing. Some rely on protein shakes and bars, some dont. There are dozens of "right" ways to be successful. You need to experiment and find what works for YOU. Not only what works for short term weight loss, but also what you can live with for the next 20, 30, 40+ years of maintenance. Personally I spent exactly 15 minutes with a nut to go over the postop recovery diet. Everything else since has been MY choices, and I have been very successful. But this is MY journey, not anyone else's. If you feel you really need the support of a nut, then find one that is more in tune with your wants and needs. After all, they work for you.

Questions for those who went to Mexico.
Kindle replied to Justajenn's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I took all my pills in a small, unlabeled container. Took several small baggies with protein powder in them. Coming back I had those things plus the meds that were dispensed by my surgeon, some extra sublingual NSAIDS I purchased at a local pharmacy, and decaf tea bags I bought at Walmart. I even had 2 large bottles of pedialyte that they let though airport security once I explained my surgery. No one even looked at my luggage crossing the border. -
Question for those who have communion at church
Kindle replied to laurashelby's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You shouldn't. Those portions are actually just about right! (And now I'm in the mood for grape juice ????) -
It took two weeks, but Abraham finally gave in and let Isaac up on the couch. My bed is still off limits, but that's OK, Isaac loves his crate.

Like Bufflehead said, this is a question for your surgeon. Personally I never had any calorie or carb restrictions. I drink milk almost everyday both pre and postop....use it to mix my Protein powders. REAL milk, not soy or almond. I did have a bit of lactose intolerance for about 4 months postop and I drank Lactaid. But that resolved and I was able to go back to regular milk. And for me, I drink 1% milk and use 1/2 and 1/2 in my coffee. But again, everyone has a different plan, so check with your doc.

How long did your STALL last?
Kindle replied to JaneJaneDoe's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I never weighed that much so the only stall I ever knew about was a month long around 2-3 months postop. If you don't want to stall, then follow your plan and don't step on the scale. I "avoided" the 3 week stall by not weighing between 2 and 6 weeks postop. -
Started at 238. I needed to lose 88 pounds for a normal BMI. I lost 100 pounds and have maintained for 5 months. I look and feel great and wished I had done this when I only needed to lose 40 pounds. And yes, you need to take the new lifestyle and food choices seriously. The surgery is the easy part.

I never thought I had a problem with the carb addiction thing. I've read so many posts on here about someone having just 1 or 2 Cookies or some bread and being thrown into a tailspin of cravings. I never got that because I have no problem eating just one. Well then I visited family for Christmas and spent the week splurging on all of my moms great homemade sweets as well as bread, potatoes and alcohol. Boy, did that trigger the cravings! I felt like crap, but still wanted more sweets. It was a relief to get back on plan when I returned home. Took about 3 days to detox, I felt so much better and my cravings for healthy stuff returned. My head (that likes the crap food) has finally given in and admitted that my body knows best.

I don't do "diet" anything. I eat normal, regular meals, just in smaller portions. I never worried about fat...I do full fat dairy and eat a ton of nuts. I use real butter and real maple syrup on my homemade pancakes. I also don't like artificial sweeteners, so I drink Water, decaf herb teas, milk, juice and if I do drink a Vitamin water or other "sports drink", it's the real thing, not low cal. Seriously, the only thing I do different from preop is drink a large protein/fiber smoothie everyday (30-40g protein/10g insoluble fiber), make sure I'm getting plenty of fluids and eat healthy.....Protein, veggies, fruit and whole grains instead of fried or processed junk food. Not to say I don't still have deserts, alcohol, bread, Pasta and other "bad" things, but in moderation, and not everyday. And, BTW, I lost over 100% of my excess weight and have kept it off for 5 months....all without "dieting"

Why Did You Choose Your Specific Type of Weight Loss Surgery?
Kindle replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I did not want the malabsorptive issues of bypass, so I never even considered it. I originally looked at Lapband, but my friend who was banded 6 years ago strongly urged against it. She felt that adequate maintenance (fills and unfills) would be very inconvenient since I would have to travel 2 hours one way to the closest Bariatric center that did them. And She actually needed emergency surgery when her band slipped and was concerned that slippage would put me in a dangerous situation considering my rural location. Then I learned about VSG and the rest is history..... -
Which Single Change Can You Make in 2015?
Kindle replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm below goal and have easily maintained within a 4 pound bounce range for almost 5 months, so my eating habits seem pretty spot on. But I have never implemented any sort of exercise program since having surgery. I find "working out" boring and my job and normal lifestyle keeps me pretty active. But I just got a Fitbit One and will try and start simple just by increasing my steps each day. The dogs have been big fans of the new hiking/snowshoeing/skiing regimen the last couple weekends. -
How many times a week or month do you weigh yourself?
Kindle replied to gamecockfan864's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I only weighed myself a couple times/month in the beginning. I can actually remember each one.... day 1 of preop diet, day 11 of preop (to make sure I was losing what my surgeon required) surgery day postop day 5 (when I returned from Mexico) postop Day 11 (New Years Day) 6 weeks, 7 weeks, 10 weeks, and 3 months. Don't even know if I had the infamous 3 week stall! But I do know I gained 3 pounds between weeks 6 and 7 and still weighed the same at 10 weeks. Then randomly lost 13 pounds by the 3 month mark. Not weighing myself drove one of my friends crazy. She had bypass 8 years ago and she weighs daily. She couldn't believe I never knew my weight when she'd ask. It was fun torturing her ???? Ever since then I've weighed once/week so I have something to post on the challenges on here. I don't own a scale, so I weigh at work on the dog scale (after Breakfast and coffee), fully clothed with shoes or boots. No clue what my actual naked weight is. For me, NSV's mean so much more than numbers -
How Much Money Do I Need To Bring?
Kindle replied to Proud2BMe's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Same here, I took $200 but spent less than $100. Bought decaf tea bags and pedialyte at Walmart, a couple protein in drinks at GNC, a couple popsicles from a street vendor and tips for driver and bellhops. Used my credit card to pay for hotel extras at checkout (movie rental, laundry service and sister's restaurant tab) -
Some of my favorite fiber supplements.... Garden of Life Raw Fiber: 5g insoluble 4g soluble bonus 7g Protein. The only problem with this product is that it gels up and thickens whatever you add it to. Tried to mix with Greek yogurt and it turned it into a cement glob. Works fine in my large 24oz smoothie. Renew Life Triple Fiber: 3g insoluble, 1g soluble, 3g protein. I use 2 scoops in my smoothie and it doesn't gel as bad as the Raw Fiber. I also mix it in yogurt, protein pancake batter and whole grain oatmeal. Good ol' flax seed: 5g insoluble, 2.5g soluble. Basically use it like the Triple Fiber above. The omegas are a bonus. I also like Kashi GoLean Cereal that has 13g protein and 10g insoluble fiber per cup. Mix it with a Greek yogurt/milk slurry and different flavored Torani syrups for a yummy snack loaded with protein and fiber.

"Addiction is a state characterized by compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli, despite adverse consequences. An addiction can be physical (nicotine, alcohol, sugar, cocaine) or behavioral (gambling, shopping, sex, exercise) Addiction - there is a psychological/physical component; the person is unable to control the aspects of the addiction without help because of the mental or physical conditions involved. Habit - it is done by choice. The person with the habit can choose to stop, and will subsequently stop successfully if they want to. The psychological/physical component is not an issue as it is with an addiction." So Did we eat (and in my case drink) the way we did preop because we were addicted or were they bad habits we didn't want to stop. the argument could be made that the physical limitations of the sleeve was the "help" I needed to control my food addiction. And Despite its potential for physical addiction, for me, I gotta throw alcohol into the habit category. I stopped by choice because the sleeve didn't really restrict that. And I have no problem having just 1 drink....it doesn't make me want more. But It's all very "grey area".

Dreams STOMPED by my insurance company
Kindle replied to mami2two's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Even an individual Obamacare policy may not cover it. Depends on what state you live in. I am self employed....own my own business, so an individual policy is my only option. My state opted out of covering any WLS, so despite paying over $3600 in insurance premiums, I still had to pay for my own surgery. Used my entire savings plus a couple grand on a credit card and went to Mexico. Best money ever spent. -
I tried probiotics (55billion CFU daily) Metamucil, benefiber, miralax and milk of magnesia. They all helped to a certain extent, but the best thing that works for me and produces soft, daily BM's, is insoluble fiber. Besides eating high fiber foods, I add at least 10g INSOLUBLE fiber to my protein smoothie everyday.

VSG Veterans - Do You Get Sick More Often Now?
Kindle replied to mnmlst's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Maybe sounds like a fluke. Or maybe your immune system is a bit stressed temporarily as you are still recovering from surgery. I was sleeved 12/20/13 and I developed a bad C. diff infection 2 months later from a dental procedure and antibiotics. Since getting over that I haven't been sick a single day. In fact, I've gotta think my immune system is stronger than ever since I finally cleared the HPV virus I've had for at least 8 years. Hopefully, once you get back to normal, you will be healthier than ever. And don't forget to get regular bloodwork, including Vitamin and mineral assays because there really isn't a one size fits all supplement regimen.
