  1. All I can tell you is what I experienced about the same time. At week 6 I gained 3 pounds and then stalled completely for a month. I was on medication for a Clostridial infection that made me very nauseous and could barely eat or drink. I had to get IV fluids 3 times. There was absolutely no excersise program. As soon as I was off the meds I at least doubled what I was eating and drinking and bam lost 8 pounds in 1 week. It's been slow and steady since then (and still no excersise program ). Our bodies do strange things and no one can give you a universal magic formula (as you have obviously discovered). I say take whichever version of "expert" advise you feel like and see what happens. If you don't like the results, try the other version. Luckily I didn't have a doctor and nut breathing down my neck, so I figured out my personal magic formula on my own. And there's nothing that says it will work for anyone else.
  2. Everything surgery and weight loss related has been super easy. 56 days of pre and post op diets restrictions were very doable and only temporary. I was uncomfortable adding new foods a few times, but never had any pain at any point. Never any "psychological" issues. I got an unrelated Clostridial infection 6 weeks postop which turned into two months of diarrhea and nausea and three rounds of IV fluids for dehydration. But again, everything to do with surgery has been much easier than I thought.

    Must have items for trip?

The Powerade zero and K2O I brought were powder packets to add to bottled Water because I figured we couldn't go through security with full bottles of anything. Turns out you can...at least I did. While in Mexico I bought a couple of bottles of pedialyte at Walmart (basically because I liked the flavors...mango and coconut). I figured the worst they could do is make me throw them out. At security, I explained about my surgery and diet restrictions, they stuck the bottles in their fancy "anti explosive/dangerous liquid" scanning device and let me pass with two full liters. But I suggest the powder packets just in case . You should also be able to get Lifewater or Vitamin water or bottled water or Gatorade after you pass through security. If you are allowed full liquids at that point, I found a lot of the convenience shops in the airports carry Muscle Milk. As for at the surgical center (Obesity Control Center), they have filtered water and the Marriott provided bottled water. I tipped all the waiters, bell hops and housemaids a couple bucks each time. We had the same driver for all three days, so I gave him one big tip at the end ($50 between my sister and I....he was super nice.)
  4. Protein shakes, Greek yogurt, cream soups with added protein powder, split pea soup, bean soup, blended tuna or crab. I wasn't on solid foods (hamburger, lunch meat) until almost 6 weeks out, so I can't imaging how you are eating those things. Stick with the less dense protein rich foods and you will be able to get more calories. No sense forcing yourself to eat if you are full.

    Must have items for trip?

My ipad, phone, chargers, powerade zero and K2O packets to add to water, Loose fitting pants (I was in sweats the whole time), slip on shoes, a hat so I didn't have to mess with my hair, GasX, cash for tips and shopping. I was in the hospital less than 24 hours then I was up shopping and sightseeing.
  6. I don't even own a scale so I weigh once a week at work (fully clothed, with shoes on and after I've had coffee and breakfast). I usually do it on a Friday so I have something to put on my ticker and to post on the "December 2013 sleevers weight loss" thread. Sometimes I forget so I don't weigh until the next Monday. I also don't track or measure my food, count calories, or go to a gym, so I guess I'm one of the "bad" examples. But below goal in under 6 months is good enough for me.
  7. I'm 6 months out and couldn't eat a cup of food! Maybe I could squeeze down a cup of yogurt, but I wouldn't be comfortable. Up until 3 months, a 1/4 cup is all I could handle MAX. After 4 months I've gradually been able to eat more at one sitting, but 1/2 - 3/4 cup is still all it takes until I'm satisfied. I eat when I'm hungry.. Usually 5-6 times/day and I never overeat. No set schedule, no tracking, no counting. Just protein first and a good balance of veggies, fruit and whole grains. I Wait at least 45 -60 minutes (basically until I don't feel the food in my tummy anymore) and then start drinking water, juice, coffee or a protein shake until it's time to eat again. Personally, I think the doctors and nuts make this whole thing way too complicated with their rules and numbers.
  8. I decaffeinated myself a couple months before surgery, too. Post op I drank a lot of decaf herbal tea, because even the decaf coffee was too acidic and hurt my tummy. About 4 months out I was able to drink coffee again and I have a huge travel mug every morning. I never felt the need to go back to the caffeine, though.
  9. Your doctor is right. Stalls are normal and it will pass. BTW, stress=cortisol=weight gain, so you might want to chill. Just follow your doctor's meal plan and better yet, STAY OFF THE SCALE!
  10. Wow! Good job! Funnel cake...mmmm...droooool.....
  11. I'm six months out and I don't measure or anything, so please forgive the lack of amounts in my description. I have never tracked my calories, so no help there, either. I basically eat when I'm hungry and just until I'm not hungry anymore. Mostly Protein, veggies, fruit and Water. I don't usually eat Pasta, rice or bread, but I have had them on a rare occasion. Breakfast... Workdays is something quick I nibble on while feeding dogs and horses and getting ready in the morning. Cottage cheese with peaches, an apple, premade spinach, sausage and cheese mini quiche, hard boiled egg, etc. last week I even had some leftover prime rib and sweet potato fries. Weekends I will sit down for a civilized breakfast. A one egg omelet with whatever I've got available..... cheese, sausage, spinach, bacon, mushrooms, green chilis, salsa.... I made a batch of protein pancakes and froze them and they are great with butter, maple syrup and a turkey sausage patty. Huevos Rancheros is another favorite weekend breakfast. Daytime Snacks and lunch.... I am on the road all day and I don't get a lunch break so my work days consist of snacks and Protein drinks. I make up a big protein smoothie 24-32oz, 30-40g protein with benefiber and Metamucil to bring along. Flavors vary .....chocolate with a banana, cake batter/hazelnut/Carmel, Peanut Butter, cake batter with blueberries, apple cranberry, orange cherry, vanilla/gingerbread, etc. I drink 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 in the afternoon. I also nibble on mixed nuts, sesame sticks, a protein or whole grain Fiber bar, cheese sticks, beef jerky and pumpkin seeds. I don't have any set lunch or snack times, but I'm usually eating every 3 hours. On top of the smoothie, I also get in a travel mug of decaf coffee and a liter of water. I'll drink a big glass of V8 a couple times/ week. On the weekends I get a lot more real food....I'll eat 5-6 mini meals, and not any snacks. dinner.... If I get home before 6pm I will have two dinners. One I try to make heavy on veggies and the other protein heavy. I eat most anything. BBQ ribs, chicken salad on pita bites, elk, Chinese food, burgers, tacos, pork loin, roast beef, rotisserie chicken, turkey curry, seafood, ham, steak, brussel sprouts, Beans, corned beef, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, carrots, baked beans, artichokes, tomatoes, avocados. Lately I haven't been getting home until 8-9pm, so I only get in one dinner. At night I have a cup of chamomile tea and sometimes some plain Greek yogurt flavored with Protein powder or apples and peanut butter as a bedtime snack. I also take a whole food based Multivitamin with Probiotics, Iron, and sublingual B12. I have indulged in alcohol, cake, ice cream, cupcakes, cheesecake, noodles, fries, donuts, chips and English toffee, but they certainly aren't everyday treats. I hit my surgeons goal weight 3 weeks ago. I'm 2 pounds away from a "normal" BMI and I'm still losing at a rate of 1-2 pounds/week.
  12. HW 238 SW 216 CW 152 TPL 86 TGP 88 Since I'm 8 pounds under my surgeons goal and so close to my personal, I switched from skim to 2% milk, real peanut butter instead of PB2 and added whole wheat sesame sticks and whole grain fiber bars to my snack list. Still down 2 pounds this week....I'll take it!

    Pre Op diet

Sorry, can't help you with fancy recipes.....I did 2 weeks of 3 protein shakes and leafy green veggies only. I was able to substitute broth with added unflavored protein powder for one shake/day but that's it. You really lucked out on your preop...it should be a breeze. Good luck.
  14. I slept flat on my back and both sides from the first night after surgery. Never had sleeping position problems...even in my waterbed with 2 dogs and 2 cats for company. Took about 2 weeks till I could sleep on my tummy just because I felt so bloated.
  15. I got my shipment of Torani SF syrups in last week and I'm having so much fun creating yummy stuff. The latest thing is ice cream (ok, it's not particularly creamy but it's delicious). Just made this one... Muscle Milk Cake Batter Protein powder Water Chobani plain Greek yogurt Carmel syrup Hazelnut syrup Blended together in a Blender Bottle and froze. You kind of have to let it partially thaw or use a fork to scrape off the top, but OMG - YUM!! The gingerbread/cake batter/yogurt ice cream was good too. I also started blending Syntrax Matrix vanilla, skim milk and the "flavor of the day" to use as frothy creamer in my coffee. Irish cream and hazelnut are my favs. Used pumpkin pie syrup to flavor my plain Greek yogurt and sprinkled in a few graham crackers crumbles for a delicious protein pumpkin pie desert. Hmmm, wonder what I can make tomorrow?
  16. The key to your success and happiness is very simple....throw your scale away and dont compare yourself to others. If you are following your doctor's plan and your hypothyroidism is being addressed, then sit back and relax. Stress= cortisol = weight gain.
  17. I had thin sliced prime rib and a few sweet potato fries for breakfast last week
  18. My first instinct was to select the first option. My insurance does not cover WLS and it is expensive, but that didn't really delay anything. I used my entire savings that I had earmarked for a new truck, and put the rest on a credit card. I decided to have WLS in the spring of 2013. I researched day and night and by July I had decided which surgery and which surgeon to use. I then had to wait until December when I could take the time off from work. So basically the biggest delay for my surgery was squeezing it into my busy work schedule. And I'm still happily driving my 15 year old Ford
  19. You're not crazy, you 're smart! I don't own one, either. I don't have any doctor follow-ups so I weigh myself on the dog scale at work a couple times/month (fulling clothed with shoes on) so I have something to put on my ticker.
  20. I'd say why don't you GFY? But of course anyone that knows me wouldn't dare ask me that.

    Carbs

I have always used real milk to mix my shakes and and dilute the Premier RTD shakes (find them too thick and sweet to drink straight). I also drink a lot of diluted fruit juices and I put bananas and berries in my Protein shakes. I was a little lactose intolerant for a couple months postop, so I used lactaid milk. I never saw the point of Almond milk because it basically has no protein. I've never counted calories or carbs so I have no idea how many grams I get in. But in any case, I've never limited "good" carbs...veggies, fruit, dairy, and whole grains. I'm below goal at 6 months out, so it works for me.

    full liquid diet?

I was given the "if it goes through a straw it's OK" guideline, too. I added unflavored protein powder to lobster bisque, tomato soup, potato leek soup, hot and sour soup base broth, tortilla soup base broth, strained wonton soup, and every cream soup I could find.... Shrimp, mushroom, asparagus, spinach, chicken, etc. I just had to dilute and strain the cream soups since they usually had chunks. I stopped straining them once I was on puréed food. Egg drop soup, and blended split pea soup and bean soups were big favs in my puréed stage.

    What OTCs do you take?

I got bucked off my horse 3 weeks ago and literally landed on my face and right shoulder. We were on a steep hill so I then rolled ass over teakettle another 10 feet. I figured without ibuprofen I would be miserable. But I soaked in a hot bath when I got home and then took arnica homeopathic sublingual every 4-6 hours for a day and a half. My ribs were sore for a week, but surprisingly not as bad as I thought they would be, so maybe the arnica really did help. Most cold meds contain Tylenol, so I think they are OK....I guess I would verify the ingredients and consult with your surgeon. My mom can't take NSAIDS because of GI issues, so she takes resveratrol and traumeel for her fibromyalgia pain. ( yeah, she can't take Lyrica, either)

    Incorporating "real" foods

So what things have you tried that sit OK? What things feel like a rock? How much of each? Do you chew every bite at least 20 times? Have you talked to your surgeon about your issues? (That should have been my first question)
