    Gastric sleeve and a leak

Nope. But maintenance would probably be easier if I did

    Gastric sleeve and a leak

I was scared of leaks, too, especially being self pay and knowing my insurance would not cover any costs of complications. I researched the heck out of ever possible complication scenario. I really wanted to know when I could stop worrying about every little twinge and rumble and "funny feeling" I had after surgery. It was 6 months before I finally let myself breath a sigh of relief. The funny thing is, I Was so worried about the complications that I never bothered to get stressed about the pre and postop diets, slow weight loss, stalls, constipation, diarrhea or hair loss.
  3. Frozen chunks of watermelon, cantaloupe and muskmelon are my #1 favorite summertime snack. SO refreshing! And being frozen, you can't eat a whole bunch at a time.
  4. I'm curious, so, you really can't have fruit ever? Or just in the beginning stages? Yes, forever. The list of foods you can never, ever have again. Also, no pre-made protein shakes. They must be powdered & made in no more than 4 ounces of Water only. I no longer see my operating surgeon for follow up because of a change in insurance. Let's say I've now been "liberated" by the team I now see. Sounds like your surgeon is setting his patients up for failure. A lifetime of that kind of restriction is impossible and frankly, entirely unnessecary. He may have the surgical skills to perform WLS but he doesn't know jack sh**t about nutrition or the psychology of obesity. Hopefully others will see the light before they sabotage themselves out of resentment for this ridiculous diet plan.
  5. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Any idea for high protein breakfast? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App eggs, sausage, bacon, ham, plain Greek yogurt flavored with Protein powder, Kashi Go Lean Cereal with dairy milk, protein smoothie, Quest bar, crustless quiche. If you like coffee, there are several kinds of coffee/mocha/latte flavored Protein drinks available. At least 3-4 days/week I make a 1 egg omelet with cheese and whatever leftovers in the fridge....spinach, ham, mushrooms, brats, peppers, turkey, etc. And breakfast doesn't even have to be "breakfast" I had a couple bites of smoked trout and a couple spoonfuls of cottage cheese for breakfast this morning.
  6. Your issues are very easy to fix......You need to be getting 60-80g of protein and minimum 64oz water. Those are the two most important elements to losing weight. Nix the granola and sugary yogurt and fruit and replace all of them with high protein foods.
  7. Details? How far out are you? What are you eating? Protein? Water? Carbs? Starting BMI? Weight lost?
  8. Do you know what happens when you start removing hydrogen atoms from a molecule? You completely change what a thing is. Start with hydrogen peroxide....remove one hydrogen and you get Water....remove two more hydrogens and you make oxygen. Or start with formaldehyde....remove two hydrogens and you have carbon monoxide. Now think of what happens when you take protein molecules and start stripping off hydrogen atoms. What's left is certainly not protein. Your body responds to hydrogen peroxide and water and oxygen in very very different ways. You can take in all the oxygen you want...it's still not water. I would speculate that eating a molecule that used to be protein but has had its hydrogen molecules removed so it no longer resembles protein in taste, odor or physical properties is not protein. He said it himself, they turn baseballs into golf balls. But when it comes down to it, a golf ball is not a baseball. Just like GENEPRO is not protein, at least as far as human biochemistry is concerned. They STILL have not provided any scientific evidence that our bodies can utilize this "stable molecular structure". A simple pre and post protein serum level study would at least start to settle the controversy. But apparently the company's marketing ploys are so successful they don't actually need PROOF.

    Too much restriction?

I would be seriously malnourished and underweight if I only ate 3x day. I've eaten 6-8 times/day ever since I started real food. I'm 2 1/2 years out, 10 pounds below goal and since I do not like feeling full by eating too much at once, this is what works for me.
  10. Me neither! Which is funny because I am very huggy with my family and friends.
  11. Check out www.smartrecovery.org it is an alternative to the typical 12-step recovery programs, It has bases in cognitive behavioral therapy and treats addiction as a behavior that you have the power to change, rather than treating you like a victim of a disease. It is quite empowering and may appeal to your controlling personality. Offers Online and in person meetings, online forums and the handbook to get started or at least see if it's for you is only $8.
  12. My sister, brother in law and two nephews have been in the Air Force. I ask my nephew who is still active and in charge of public relations in Denver.... " History of any gastrointestinal procedure for the control of obesity is disqualifying. Artificial openings, including, but not limited to ostomy (V44), are disqualifying. " I also found a blog online from someone that tried to enlist in 2014 and went though the entire process but was told that weight loss surgery is an "unwaiverable medical procedure". Things may have changed, but only a recruiter would know for sure.

    Coffee?

If your surgeon says it's OK then you might as well try it. I know some people were drinking coffee day after surgery. Every time I Tried it hurt. Took about 6 months before I could tolerate a small cup. I can now drink it fine, but if I have too much it gives me gastritis and I have to take antacids. So I mostly stick with tea.
  14. Yeah, my body just doesn't seem to mind surgery. Discharged less than 24 hours and back to work in two weeks after my spinal fusion surgery (even though I was on some kckass pain Meds for that one), Went grocery shopping and cleaned my house within 4 hours of waking up from gallbladder surgery. I'm always pretty wired after anesthesia.
  15. Some people can do sweets in moderation....luckily I am one of them. I can have just a couple bites and move on. But some people can't. if you are a sugarholic the only way to not crave sugar is to not ever eat it. And, BTW, your brain reacts the same to artificial sweeteners as it does to real sugar (i.e. You still crave sugar) so I'd stay away from those, too, until you can figure out to control your cravings.
  16. Not sure what you mean by "out". I was out shopping days 1 and 2, I was out traveling via plane and car days 3 and 4. I went out to Grandmas house for Christmas dinner day 5, went out to get my haircut day 6 and went back to work day 7. Christmas Day was the hardest, maybe because I hadn't really rested at all since surgery. I lounged in a recliner, sipping my Protein shake while everyone else chowed down at the dinner table. But they all knew about my surgery so my fatigue and eating habits weren't questioned.

    Too much restriction?

I was still on liquids at 2 weeks. Didn't start purees until 3 weeks. It was at least a month before I could eat more than 2 tablespoons at a time. You don't have to progress as fast as your surgeon's plan allows. I certainly didn't. Just do what it takes to meet Fluid and Protein goals and keep your calories up, even if that means staying on Protein shakes for as long as it takes. Believe me, you will lose that restriction sooner than you'd like.
  18. You might be able to, but it wouldn't be my first choice. Rice is empty , non nutritious calories that take up precious space in your teeny tiny tummy. There are a lot better high protein/low carb choices for the pureed/soft food stages. Try adjusting the recipe minus the rice. You could reducing the liquid and add unflavored protein powder to act as a binder.
  19. Prilosec, Nexium, Pepcid, Zantac, Rolaids, tums, Maalox
  20. I couldn't tolerate lactose, artificial sweeteners or plain water for 4 months, but now I can. Too much alcohol, coffee or fried food gives me gastritis and I can't do carbonation at all.

    Feeling Stuffed

At three weeks I was still on full liquids. I didn't break things down into meals and snacks because it took all day, sipping every chance I got from the moment I opened my eyes until the moment I fell asleep to get in all my protein and fluids. And yes, I felt stuffed all the time. Once I started pureed food I ate maybe a couple tablespoons in the afternoon. Anything more than that and I couldn't meet my protein and fluid goals. It was 4 months before eating/drinking wasn't such a chore
  22. 2 1/2 years out 1. Can you still enjoy the same foods with just a smaller portion size? Yes. Except beer....can't do carbonation. But even though I would "enjoy" eating cheesecake, garlic bread, pad Thai, etc everyday doesn't mean that I do. They are now treats I might eat a couple times/year You need to make serious adjustments to your food choices in order to be successful long term. Just because you CAN eat something doesn't mean you SHOULD. 2.What are the portion sizes that you can eat? depends on the food....1/4-1/2 cup of steak or chicken, 1 cup of soup, Greek yogurt or veggies, 2-3 cups of things like popcorn, and probably unlimited portions of chips or ice cream (never tried to find an end point). This is why your choices are so important. You can eat way more of the things you shouldn't be eating. 3. Do you regret having this surgery? Not for one minute
  23. When I tell my shrink about stuff like this, he just gives me *that look* -- you know, the one that lets me know he's mentally classifying my brilliant record-keeping skilz as something psychologically derogatory. I keep telling him that these behaviors are *superpowers*. I don't think he understands. My therapist gives me those looks, too. In fact, sometimes she can't contain herself and actually proclaims "wow!" over some things I say. As if I didnt already think I was crazy.
  24. First 3-4 months I only weighed at the doctors office. Maybe 6 times during that entire period. 4 - 12 months weighed once/week so I had something to record on my BP ticker. I did this on the scale at work, after Breakfast and coffee, fully clothed and with shoes/boots on. For me it was not about my true, accurate weight, it was about the overall downward trend. Hit low weight (138) around 10 months 12-29 months, I weigh about 2-3 times a month, on the scale at work as described above. I mostly step on it after a particularly carby weekend and definitely after vacations/holidays when I know I ate way off plan. I've stayed at 138-142 for over 1 1/2 years. if I see the number hit 143, I go back to strict basics and may even step on the scale as soon as a week later just to make sure I'm staying in range. Edit: yes. I know my ticker says 136, but I've only weighed that for about a month (confirmed on scale twice). So perhaps I've hit a new low, but i'm going to wait another month before calling it official.
