What Should I Stock Up On?
MindiJean replied to tjdorsett's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I also get sick with artificial sweeteners. And it is HARD to find things with Stevia rather than xylitol, aspartame, sorbitol. This is the drink mix I use. A bit expensive. A bit lower on the protein scale, but great to add to your 64 ounces of Water a day. http://www.drugstore.com/popups/largerphoto/default.asp?pid=373555&catid=314087&size=500&trx=29888&trxp1=373555&trxp2=1 -
What Should I Stock Up On?
MindiJean replied to tjdorsett's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My sleeve is scheduled for November 20. I have a different pre and post op diet though and will be eating pureed before I leave the hospital. Here is what I have in my cupboard: whey Protein to add to Water. Orange, berry and lemon flavored. Sweetened with Stevia. canned tuna canned turkey canned chicken canned ham lots of cream of chicken soup dry milk powder canned turkey chili I also have a lot of edamame frozen soup in the freezer and five pounds of shredded low fat sharp cheddar as well as lots of egg whites in the refrigerator. And I just ordered from Bariatric Choice some high protein oatmeals, Soups, Snacks, omelets, premade Protein drinks. -
Should we buy the grocery store small turkey dinner (turkey, stuffing, potatoes, gravy, green bean casserole and cranberry fluff) for my husband and I can have pureed turkey. Or should I send him to a friend's house for a big dinner. Or should we stay home and he can have a turkey sandwich? My post-op diet, and diet before leaving the hospital, is pureed with no liquid Protein diet.

Thanksgiving: 8 Days Post-Op
MindiJean replied to MindiJean's topic in Gastric Plication Surgery Forum
My surgeon and Nut do not believe in using liquid Proteins. No protein shakes. Have to have eaten pureed before being discharged from the hospital. Their experience has been that the quicker you learn to eat "normal" food, even if it's pureed, the fast you regain your life. I can add powdered milk to my two cups of milk Snacks every day. -

I'm never on liquids. Pre op is high Protein low carb and they start me on pureed right after surgery. -

Were you given the option of taking a shower after your surgery? I'm supposed to be in for three days and I can't imagine not showering for three days?

Have you SEEN where I put my tongue or SMELLED whatever it is that crawled in my throat and died?

We just got a nice new Keurig. Are any of you drinking coffee or tea after surgery?

I want to preface this by saying I really don't care, I'm just curious. I've always wondered, when you lose the weight, do you tend to look older? I've found that many "overweight" people that I know, including myself, seem to have less wrinkles. I'm looking forward to a healthier me so that I can have my hernia fixed, so whatever happens, happens. So, what happens?

I believe that everyone has a totally different pre-op diet. For myself, the only thing I've been told NOT to do is drink my nutrition, ie: NO Protein drinks. I have a low carb high protein diet for one week before surgery. And I start pureed foods while still in the hospital.

I have enough of my two insulin pens to last through my surgery on the 20th. Should I refill? Do most diabetics get off their meds after surgery?

It sounds like what works for some, does nothing for others

Anyone else?

What are you hoping to "gain" by losing weight with this surgery? I'm having this surgery so that I can lose weight and have a safer hernia surgery in the Spring. I am a bladder cancer survivor. I had my bladder removed in a long 12 hour surgery in March of 2011. I started developing a hernia a few months after surgery, and it has now grown to be 14 cm in diameter. It could have it's own zip code. The surgeon suggested that I lose weight prior to fixing the hernia, for a less life-threatening procedure and higher success rate. My real hope and dream is to eventually gain my life back. My husband and I have been foster parents for about 8 years now. We've lost three babies of our own, had four failed adoptions, lost our last baby when they found the tumors in my bladder. I am 45 years old, and would like to one day have a "forever child". We are trying to adopt. I want to be able to take care of and have energy and be able to play with our child, if we ever reach our fundraising goal to afford adoption! I can't do that now, with a 14 cm hernia. It hurts to walk any distance now. We have numerous fundraisers going on right now. I have different online parties all the time, that my friends hold for us. Our goal, along with having the funds to adopt, is for both of us to be able to successfully parent a child of our own. And my hope is that this surgery is the first step to achieving our goal.
