Pre-VSG lack of support from parents
Chelsi replied to jenRRT's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
my mom was really against me getting the surgery at first, but then i made her come to one of the open seminars where my surgeon explained exactly what and how weight loss surgery would benefit me. from there, when she was actually told by a doctor what was happening, she felt a lot better about it. i think it helped her realize that it's not an uncommon thing, and that i had tried everything else to lose my weight, this was a "last resort", and i felt hopeless. it made her understand it a little bit better. maybe if your parents attended something like that or you showed them something online? it's hard when people don't support your decision. my boss was like (mind you, she weighs like 130 lbs) "you don't need surgery to lose weight!" and she doesn't know what it's like to be as heavy as i am, so i don't really value her opinion too much. but you're in the right place! everyone here is super supportive and helpful! you will do great! -
They put me under anesthesia for mine! I would've hated to be awake for that!

September Sleevers
Chelsi replied to duffrebecca12@gmail.com's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
One of my good friend's mother just had hers on the 7th and she is doing fantastic! Seeing her go through it and being able to visit her and see how she is recovering is definitely easing my nerves. Especially since we have the same surgeon. I know my doctor also offers support groups, so maybe you should check with your office and see if there's anything like that you can attend before just to get some connections? But you'll do great! My date is 9/19! -

Make sure you're aware of what exactly your nutritionist and surgeon want as far as dietary plans go. From what I've read on this site, my plan is very different from the "norm". A lot of people have a two week pre-op clear liquid diet, and I am allowed one meal a day with protein shakes as the other two replacement meals. I was also looking for an alternative to the Bariatric Advantage protein powder (which is what my NUT recommends and pushes) but I didn't like the taste of it. A lot of members on here suggested Syntrax, which my NUT says I shouldn't be using for shakes because it's too low in protein. Just see if your nutritionist has a guideline of how many grams of protein/sugar/carbs he/she thinks is ideal for you to have per meal and find your own alternatives to suggest next appointment. This site is very helpful with that, as I've found so far on the beginning of this journey.

I had my first nutritionist appointment today and she gave me samples of Bariatric Advantage protein shakes. I had the strawberry one, and I thought it tasted gross. Does anyone have other suggestions for the protein powders/shakes? Only because I don't know if I can drink one of those a day and then twice a day three weeks before surgery. Luckily, my pre-op diet allows me to still eat certain foods and drink 2-3 protein shakes a day. But I don't know if I can stomach the shakes. Help!

So I emailed my nutritionist about the syntrax and she said that the syntrax doesn't have enough protein for a shake/meal replacement. She would prefer I use one off of the list she gave me (which sucks because I can't find sampling sizes for most of them). But she said the syntrax is good for adding to greek yogurt and stuff for extra protein. She said she'll give me some samples when I have my next appointment. Sigh.
