    Eggs!

eggs sat pretty hard for me at first. They seemed to go thud almost immediately. I can eat a one egg omelette now with care, by chewing well and eating slowly. At first they are a good choice and you should def try them. Now, at 8 weeks, they're not packing quite the nutritional punch for me. One egg fills me up tight and only gives me 6 gms of Protein. I'd much rather eat 1/2 c of cottage cheese which sits easier and gives me more protein. My long-winded point here is not to not eat them. Rather it's to say go ahead and enjoy it if you can, just know at some point you may be migrating away from these foods. Or something. I don't know what my point was anymore! Same with cheese. Loved it initially, sat easy, now the numbers aren't working for me so much.
  2. Also as I think about it, I get very little Protein from yogurt and cheese anymore. I too am 8 weeks and I wasn't one of the lucky ones that lost my hunger. I find cheese to be too calorie rich and not filling enough. My standard snack between meals has become 2oz of deli meat which gives me a good bit of protein, is easy on my sleeve, and can be eaten somewhat unobtrusively in meetings. I put it in the tiny tupperware containers and take 2 a day with me. I also love dried salted edamame. 1/4 c has lots of crunch and 14 gms of protein! I still have a hard time believing that. If I'm really hungry at night, I steam some frozen edamame (Costco and Sam's have bags) and eat those with salt and cayenne pepper on the pods. Nom nom nom. They have good Fiber too. I too have been lactose intolerant probably my whole life. I cannot drink even half a cup of milk without getting very sick, I can only do cheese in small quantities, half a cup of ice cream maybe, I haven't had any in so long I don't know. BUT I can do yogurt and cottage cheese just fine. I think the more fermented or aged the cheese, the less lactose it has, and the easier it is to tolerate. So I can tolerate are more aged Parmesan than I can mozzarella. More yogurt than ice cream etc. HTH

Started 'Couch to 5k today' Anyone keen?

Okay finished w1d3 today. Good news is that my husband started with me today! It's blazing hot outside so we decided to go to the gym (the one we pay for but haven't used In embarrassingly long). He is in MUCH better shape than I am. It was his first day and the man lapped me! Woo hoo! I was so proud of him. It was fun to go to the gym together, but be able to go at our own pace. My son will be doing it at the co-parents's house today so we're all going get our day in. Good to get the family involved. I plan to repeat the week with him so we can start w2 together.
  5. have you tried lactaid pills? they really really help with lactose intolerance.

    October 100 Mile Challange!

Have you guys thought of creating a beginner's thread with a 50 mile threshold? I don't know if it would be redundant or motivating? I can imagine a few people out there wouldn't want to sign up for 100 right away, but 50 is easier to contemplate for someone who hasn't been active for a long time. Thoughts?

  11. I did find that many of the Mexico docs I looked into had more surgeries under their belt than many US surgeons, and they didn't get there by doing 8-10 sleeves a day either. As you say I think many starting sleeving earlier than some of the ones here.
  12. New recipe with pictures at http://sleevers.wordpress.com/2013/09/28/high-protein-paleo-gluten-free-fish-masala-curry/ As many of you know, I’m not a professional cook so there’s a lot of trial and error going on for me. One of the hardest things since being sleeved, is knowing how much to cook and getting the proportions right. I struggle with this, and this recipe is a classic example of it. You’ll note that I made twice as much of the “masala” as I should have. Since the masala is the most time-consuming part of this recipe, and since it keeps very well, I thought I’d leave the recipe as is, and let you save half the masala as I did. Tomorrow, I will show you how to re-purpose that into something else. So here goes. Ingredients 1 lb firm-flesh fish (I used a combination of halibut, shrimp, and scallops because that’s what I had!) 1 small onion 3 cloves garlic 2 in piece of ginger 1 medium tomato 1/4 c of shredded, unsweetened coconut (if unavailable, use some coconut milk instead of water) 3 tsp oil 2 tsp ground turmeric 1/8 tsp mustard seeds 1/8 tsp cumin seeds 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper 1 tsp garam masala salt to taste 1 c water 4 tbsp chopped cilantro for garnish and flavor Method 1. Marinate the fish with 1 tsp oil, 1 tsp turmeric and 1/4 tsp salt 2. Meanwhile, pulse the onion, garlic and ginger in a food processor or chop finely. Do not liquefy. 3. Heat 2 tsp oil in a pan. When it starts to shimmer, put in the mustard and cumin seeds and let them sputter. This sounds like popcorn popping. 3. Add in the onion/garlic/ginger mix and cook over medium heat. This is a labor of love so do not rush it. It may take 10 minute and that’s just the way it goes. 4. Add in the chopped tomatoes, all of the rest of the spices and the coconut and mix well. 6. Realize that you have no idea how to make small quantities. Take out half the masala and save it in a tupperware container. 7. Into the remaining masala, add in half a cup of water, and the fish that has been marinating. 8. Cover and let it come to a boil. When it boils, take it off the heat and let it sit for 10 minutes so that the fish cooks gently. This keeps it from over-cooking. 9. Garnish with cilantro and enjoy! While the rest of your family might enjoy this over rice, we gave ourselves two pieces of fish and a little sauce. Then we shredded the fish and ate it semi-moist. It was moist, but not soupy and therefore not a slider.
  13. Yes it does! By day 5 I had so much dang energy I was the energizer bunny. Just hang I. There. Soon you will feel SO good, and so much in control it will be totally worth it. You will see yourself as a winner who had "got this". It's the best feeling in the world.
  14. Awwww what a sweetheart!, that last picture is so perfect. Congrats grandma.

    What to tell work?

"I have a medical procedure that requires me to be gone on tue morning and I'll be back in the afternoon". That's it. You don't need to say anything else. If my staff told me that, all I am legally allowed to say, and even this is a bit dodgy is, "is everything okay?" " or " let me know If I can help". And you can just say yep, all good. End of discussion. I've had people tell me very little and yet be gone for a weeks on health issues and I can't ask questions. I've had jr staffers express concern by saying "I hope it's nothing serious" and have had to scold them for it because it's inappropriate. If someone says that, just say "just routine stuff" and leave it at that.

    October 100 Mile Challange!

I'm seeing everyone posting these goals and I'm getting anxious. Can I still join even if I only think I can do 40 miles? Or do I need to sit at a kids table somewhere? The one labelled with a P for wussy?

Started 'Couch to 5k today' Anyone keen?

Hi there. I too have joint issues. I've done only two days so far and have usual muscle soreness from starting an exercise regime and today, ankles are sore but my joints are not (yet) hurting. I'm fact I was able to do it yesterday and then go to a baseball game and walk another mile to get back and forth. Hoping it stays like this. I hurt too much to do it today but went for a 1.5 mile slow walk instead. Download c25k free onto your smart phone, turn it on, and do what it tells you. For me, jogging in very small steps, putting my whole foot down rather than landing on ball or heel of foot seems to reduce the jarring and hence the impact on the knees. So far! Early days. Good luck!

    6 week update pics.

You're like the disappearing man over here! Each pic there's less and less of you to see. Great progress.
  21. I started at BMI 36 I think. About 10 weeks since pre-op liquid and I've averaged 3.2 lbs a week. In a normal world that is not slow but I am unsure whether sleevers would consider it fast or slow. Me, I'm happy to be losing at whatever pace, as long as I'm losing.
