  1. I'm 8 weeks out and haven't hit 800 yet. I have my goal set to 700 and average under that, but I do try to get at least 70 gms of protein and focus on that.

can you build muscle on a post-op diet?

Okay this was very helpful. Once the lightbulb went on about anything that is not fat lbs = lean mass, then I did 1-fat lbs and re-did my calcs and I feel great! you know why? Because of my 32 lbs of loss? only 4 lbs was lean mass, rest was fat. Woo hoo!!

can you build muscle on a post-op diet?

I've been keeping track of my fat and muscle percentages from the begining but am struggling to make sense of the numbers. I don’t quite know how to figure it out accurately. According to my scale, I’ve lost 32 lbs in total. But based on percentages and calculating total fat lbs and muscle lbs, it also shows that 29 lbs of that is fat and 12 lbs of that is muscle, which is clearly 42 lbs, not the 32 lbs I’ve lost. Not sure how to reconcile this. Thoughts?

Started 'Couch to 5k today' Anyone keen?

Me too! My husband loves that store. You Washingtonians! All alike. Come in, do it with us. My husband just started yesterday. Let's struggle through it together. Trust me, no one would look at me and think, there goes a future runner. For one, I hate sweating But the first week has given me hope and I think you might surprise yourself. Also, I took pressure off myself by saying it was okay to repeat weeks. That I didn't care about finishing in 8 weeks, I just wanted to finish. So what if it takes me 16 weeks to finish because I have to do each week twice? Still lapping everyone on the couch.

can you build muscle on a post-op diet?

Thanks so much for starting this thread. Although I am only 8 weeks post-op, lately I have started to think that what I need is not a goal weight, but a goal body fat percentage. I don't want to be skinny fat. I don't want to lose metabolism-boosting muscle and be left with a lot of fat. No one will know how much I weigh except me, but the whole world could look at me and know whether or not I am fit and strong. I've put on muscle from lifting before so I know how frustrating it is to work out hard and not see weight loss. I worked out with a trainer 3 times a week, cardio and heavy weights, and ate clean for 6 straight months--and lost 1 lb. I was so disheartened I cried. And I cry maybe once every two years so this was serious! Turns out I had put on 13 lbs of muscle in those 6 months. Who knew? I now use a scale called eat smart that measures body fat and muscle mass. I expect to lose muscle at our level of calories. I know that all I can do is minimize the loss of muscle and maximize the fat loss. Rambling a bit, but my point is maybe we all need to focus more on muscle retention and fat loss rather than muscle gain and weight loss. Sorry I was probably of NO help whatsoever to the OP! But your thread and the responses were very helpful to me, so thank you

Its been almost 2 years and Im scared

Do you monitor your food? Do you know how much you're eating? Many of us use myfitnesspal and keep track of every bite we ear, to help tell us what changes we need to make.

Tired of women leaving me for the "cute skinny guy"

I'm surprised that no one has commented on this part: what do you mean left you for a different guy? Forget skinny or fat, if they left you for someone else, there was at least some amount of unfaithfulness, whether physical or mental. Most of us leave a relationship because it's not right for us. Not because we stayed in it until we found someone better. My humble opinion? If three women have known another man well enough to decide they want to be with him--and this while they were still dating you!--then you're picking the wrong women. It's not about your weight, it's about your choices in women. Btw, I was dating an Olympian, silver medal winner for his country when I ran into my now-husband, who was comfortably off but not stinking rich, and was overweight. And once I got to know him, the Olympian with his gorgeous and extremely muscled body did not stand a chance.
  12. You know there's another thread someone started that said "if you still struggle, why do it?" Or something like that. You might enjoy that one too. I learned a lot from it.
  13. Omg. This is what they mean when they say " we had surgery on our stomach not on our brain". Very scary isn't it?

    Eggs!

  16. I buy it dried. I bought a small packet on amazon to see if I'd like it and I did. But costco sells a big jar of it, and I know places like whole foods, central market, sprouts, etc all sell them. The frozen ones I get from Costco but I know even krogers, Tom Thumb etc all carry those. I've been eating those for years, usually instead of popcorn when we watch a movie at home.

    October 100 Mile Challange!

That's like I'm too fat to run so I act like I'm jogging but really I'm just wheezing like an asthmatic elephant. Technical term for that right there.
  22. I did a lot of research into advocare. Forgive me for potentially over-simplifying it, but if you simplify it, it's Vitamins, caffeine and Fiber. If you are post sleeve, you're already taking good vitamins. Check! You can drink tea for coffee for caffeine. Check! And you don't need fiber to fill your tummy like non -ops because your tummy is small, and you already have restriction. For non-ops fiber fills you up and helps you lose weight by cutting down your intake. For those who are sleeved, Protein fills you up and cuts down your intake by forcing the pyloric valve to shut down. Really, IMHO, save your money for the new clothes you will no doubt need as a result of the surgery.
