Please Dont Pass This One Up

There's a whole PCOS forum here somewhere. I don't have PCOS, but I did have metabolic syndrome, with it's attendant pre-diabetic status, insulin resistance, etc. Here's what I can tell you the research says works for those of us with Syndrome X or Metabolic syndrome. A diet very low in carbs. All carbs. So divide your Protein/Fat/Carbs into 40/40/20 and stick to it, and you will increase your chances of success. If you had pre-diabetes, high triglycerides, high blood pressure, were overweight, insulin resistant, and high bad cholesterol, low good cholesterol, you will benefit from this composition of macronutrients. I hope you find the other PCOS folks on here and they can tell you more specific thins about pregnancy etc. Good luck!

    The Stall

I posted about stalls and linked to several articles that explained to me why stalls happen. Maybe they'll help you too? http://sleevers.wordpress.com/?s=public+service+announcement&submit=Search

    November fitness challenge

Roger isn't running so I don't think that's it. I don't know if this is happening to you, Isu, and my husband but I've read on here that when you first lose weight, you get these odd aches and pains in your back, hips, knees etc. and they're because your center of gravity shifts significantly with the weight loss. For some it goes away with time. But honestly, I think it's worth a check up. It could be something else and why take a chance, you know? Might make it worse if neglected.
  8. strict adherence to the pre- and post-op diet is actually a matter of safety and the best way to reduce leaks, complications, etc. So sticking to the plan is in a way, non-negotiable. But once you are over the first few weeks and cleared for solids, strict adherence is necessary to maximise your first few months of weight loss. IT gets harder as time goes, your appetite increases, and you really don't want to lose the "honeymoon window" of the first 6-9 months. Once you are at goal weight, can you eat cake on your birthday? sure. Can you eat cake everyday? nope. At no point in time can you waltz around eating chips, Cookies and cake and not expect to gain weight. But I do see vets who are at maintenance allowing themselves the odd treat or two during a week with no ill effects. I think of that as eating like skinny, healthy people. Most skinny people don't eat junk food every day. Nor can we. Be sure to ask a lot of questions, understand expectations clearly, and accept that you will be working under those guidelines. That seems to be the path to success that I see all the successful vets here having taken. and good luck

My husband's hip is bothering him too. Kind of like a soft tissue pain. I forced him to see a chiropractor and that helped for a bit, but he's limping now. I have to nag him to go see the doctor and get some x-rays. I hope you get yours seen to as well.

MTD: 33 and planked again for 90 seconds. Was going for 105s but I basically grunted and collapsed. Very attractive, I know. The dog keeps licking my hair every time I get on the floor. Very distracting!

    Bad Breath

For me, hot tea and constant mouthwash helped a lot. Also I keep those little altoids minis in my purse as well as listerine strips. There's not a lot you can do to avoid it, you can only mask it. Constantly. I have changed my attitude toward the bad breath. I tell myself it's a sign I'm in ketosis and so am losing weight.
  14. yes it's definitely possible.I think the advice about logging everything, and consulting with her docs to figure out what was going on was dead on. Those things help us all don't they?

    Im Not Special.....

me too! I am so mad that everything that's happened to other people is happening to me! Stalls just as they predicted. Anger and sadness just as predicted. hair loss! Right at the three months, just as they predicted. Weight lost, just as they predicted. Inches lost. happiness gained. Finally something that works even for someone who couldn't lose weight with anything else, Just as they predicted. i was so sure I would be that medical marvel who lost no weight even after being sleeved. But no, I wasn't special either. Hang tight. Keep getting Protein, keep drinking Water, walk as much as you can, and measure yourself and take comfort tha it will pass.
  16. beat you up? It's time to dance a jig! why beatings? I"m glad you haven't.

    Dr. Alavrez patients...

If you still haven't found anyone here who is scheduled that day, ask Susan if she will give your info to the others being sleeved the same day and see if they want to get in touch with you. Amyinorlanda here did that and she was sleeved the day before me, 3.5 months ago, and still keeps up the other two ladies. He is an extremely competent surgeon and you are indeed in very good hands.
  18. So if I can share my own experience with you? Several years ago, I too weighed a lot from eating the wrong things and then decided to eat only one meal a day and starve myself. I too hated food because all it did was make me fat. My trainer and nutritionist made me eat 5 times a day. And I immediately put on weight. I was terrified. I wanted to go back to eating once a day because although I wasn't losing weight, at least that way I wasn't gaining weight. They both reassured me the weight would come off if I kept eating small meals. And it did, although very slowly. I too worried that the surgery would not help me because I was eating 800 calories, starving myself and still not losing weight. So I can relate to a lot of what you are saying. I won't tell you to disobey your NUT or your Doctor. But I will urge you to put your concerns before them, tell them that you are following their orders, and are now putting ON weight, and worried this will disqualify you from your surgery. They are there to help you. Reach out to them, and get the help you need from them. They want you to be successful. Just ask for help, they will meet you half-way.

    Anger Anyone?

yes it does make sense. You can understand he has to be gone and still be resentful of him for being gone. It's normal. As long as you catch yourself and don't take it out on him, it's fine I saw your earlier post a few days after he was back saying he was driving you nuts, and I was like, "yup, I know what's happening there!" I should have reached out then. I don't think it's lost brain cells, I think it's a lot of change at once. he's home, you're smaller, you've had surgery...there's a lot going on. Give yourself a break and just breathe. It will get easier. And let him know it's not that you're mad at him. It's just that you're mad, and he sometimes happens to be there

    Similar To Atkins?

I agree with everything bklyngal said. I will also add that I think once people reach maintenance, and are not in the active weight loss phase, you can add back some complex carbs. To vastly oversimplify, after 6-9 months, people may end up eating 1 cup of food at a meal. Of that, 1/2c is meat, 1/4c is veg, 1/4c is either fruit or grain. That's fairly different to Atkins. But I think up front, during the first 6-9 months when you are in the fastest weight loss phase, it is low carb but still allowed veggies and fruit. For most of us though, it's hard to get enough Protein and still have room for that much more food so the veg intake is necessarily lower than you'd like. I'm so glad you're looking into this before surgery and getting a clear idea of what you will have to do after. If I can give you one piece of advice, I will tell you to not believe those who tell you that you will be able to eat anythign you want and still lose weight. You will have to be deliberate and careful about the choices you make. The sleeve makes resisting bad choices a LOT easier. But if you decide to fill your sleeve with chips and cake, you will likely not lose weight.
  21. Okay I'm shamelessly bumping this topic because a lot of people are asking about stalls. Read the first post here and the referenced articles, and feel better!
  22. You're doing very well then! if the stall is getting to you, amuse yourself by reading some of the articles I posted here that explain WHY stalls happen. http://sleevers.wordpress.com/2013/08/27/this-is-a-public-service-announcement-regarding-weight-loss-stalls-and-plateaus/
  23. (if you can't see this post without a bunch of extra HTML code, go here: http://sleevers.wordpress.com/2013/11/10/you-may-be-doing-better-than-you-think/) Or math games geeks play. So I see people posting how they’ve lost a lot less than those who were sleeved the same day as them. “I’m 3 months out and I’ve only lost X but everyone else has lost so much more than me.” Theoretically we all understand that if someone has a lot to lose, they will lose faster than someone who has less to lose. But here’s an example to make it real. There’s me, with 80 lbs to lose, and there’s my friend Emily who has 180 lbs to lose. Mine are actual results, and I made up the results for Emily. Wow, I’m doing really badly. I’ve “only” lost 35 lbs in 3 months and Emily has lost 79 lbs! Obviously, I’m failing. But you want to know a secret? I didn’t entirely make up Emily’s numbers. Look at the picture below. Can you guess what I did? Yup. I messed around with the numbers until Emily had lost exactly the same as I had in terms of percent excess weight to lose. I have 80 lb. to lose, she has 180 lb. to lose. In order for her to match me for percent of excess weight lost, she has to lose considerably more than I do during the same time period. Poor Emily is having to work a lot harder to get the same results I am. And what do you know, I'm doing just fine. This is why I strongly believe that we should move away from total pounds lost, and move to percent excess weight lost to gauge where we are in our journeys. Here’s how to calculate your %EWL: [Total weight lost/(Starting weight - Goal Weight)]*100 [35/(230-150)]*100 (35/80)*100 =44% Who knew Math could make you feel better hunh? Btw, if you're total math phobic, give me your start weight, your current weight, and your goal weight and I will do this for you.
  24. Okay all y'all that are on liquid diets. Remember how bad you feel the first 3-4 days. Remember it well. Because when you want to cheat? Just remember that going back to all liquids after cheating? Will feel that bad again. That was what was sooo motivating for me! I did NOT want to have to go through that "detox" and feel again like I did the first few days. The good news is, I think of it like labor. No matter how painful it is, they're going to take that baby from you in 24 hours one way or another right? There's a definite end and you just have to make it to the end. It's not forever. No matter how much it sucks? The worst of the liquid diet is over in 3-4 days. You will have lots of energy after that, and you will feel good about yourself. So hang tight, and hang strong!

    Anger Anyone?

Hey girl, yeah I think it happens to all of us. It is normal and I will echo what Momonanomo said about being hyper aware of it and trying to take a deep breath before reaction. Estrogen is stored in fat. When the fat is released, estrogen floods your system and makes you all kinds of cuckoo. In your case though, I wonder if some of it isn't exacerbated by your husband coming home? My husband and I love each other very much, but when one of us has been gone, even for a few days, we have a short adjustment time where we have to settle in together again. The little things they do that we got used to when living together, we have to get used to again. In your case, he was gone for five months. You and your son got into a habit, a routine, and you got to do things your way. Now he's back and you can't live exactly like you did, you have to adjust to being part of a couple again. No matter the love, that adjustment takes a few days. Initially when my husband was in Alaska for 3 weeks at a time, it was really hard when he came home and after missing each other terribly, we'd end up snapping at each other for the first few days. Even now, if I'm gone for 2-3 days, which I often am, it can take us all of one evening to adjust to each other. So give yourself some time and acknowledge that re-adjusting to being part of a couple requires us to be somewhat "unselfish", and we do get "selfish" when our spouses are gone.
