I guess my story begins about five years ago when i was seventeen and a senior in high school.
I was skinny all my life. I was active and played sports and loved life. My senior year of high school I was 5'8 (im still 5'8) and weighed 125 lbs, size 30 B(and barely B at that). I was in the homecoming court and (to put into perspective for a later part of my story) my size 4 homecoming dress had to be taken in and altered to fit my tiny frame.
now homecoming is in November, and fast forward six months to May of that same school year. My senior prom. Searching for a dress for my senior prom was tragic. By May of 2009, only six short months from fitting into that tiny homecoming dress i purchased a size 14 dress for my senior prom. No one understood why i put on so much weight so quickly. nothing had changed. i played sports year round, and even through my track season i was putting on more and more weight. I graduated and went on with life. I exercised and did everything in my power to lose the 80 lbs i had gained in less than a year. but as time went on all i could do was maintain my new heavier weight, but unfortunately, never lose any.
Shortly after i turned 19, i went to see a gynecologist for the first time. My grandmother and i were concerned because my cycle had completely stopped. Now i first got my period when i was 12 years old, and throughout my entire teenage years i was always irregular, but doctors up till this point had always attributed by irregular cycles to being an athlete and being overly physical. I never thought much of it and in fact, enjoyed not having to deal with my monthly friend. At 19 though, the irregularity grew to become a concern. It had been 10 months since my last cycles and enough was enough.
I explained to my doctor about my weight gain and irregular cycle and he immediately said PCOS. a few tests and sonograms later and it was official. i had poly cystic ovarian syndrome.
since that visit with the doctor i have gone through countless methods of trying. ive been on Metformin (Glucophage) and birth control for years and then tried the progesterone treatments and nothing seemed to work. At my heaviest, i weighed 235 lbs and no matter how many medications or how much exercise and adjustments to my diet, nothing ever worked.
I contemplated WLS for about a year. My aunt, grandmother and grandfather have had success so ive seen how much good it can do. but i was concerned that i was too young or that surgery was too drastic.
i finally decided to go have a consultation with Dr. Seger. I told him this story and he was so enthusiastic about helping me.
i had actually gone in asking about the band, but he talked to me about the sleeve and i was sold. Dr. Seger talked to me about how over time, many of the complications i had been suffering from due to having PCOS may soon be gone. I could not believe it! Up until this point i had started to come to terms with the fact that i may never be able to have children, but dr. seger explained to me that post-op that should not be a problem anymore.
now because i was going to pay for the surgery myself (my insurance wouldnt cover it) my WLS journey moved extremely quickly. I went in for my first meeting with Dr. Seger on friday june 7, 2013 and scheduled my surgery for exactly 2 weeks later june 21, 2013. I am a full time college student, even though the summer, and Dr. Seger worked around his normal surgery schedule to get me in on a friday so that i could be back to school by monday or tuesday.
It has only been two weeks since being sleeved and i am loving it thus far!
I stayed in the hospital for two nights and did not experience a bit of pain. i did not use any of the pain medication they offered me and was up and walking the same day as surgery. I got home from the hospital sunday and on monday morning when i woke up for school, much to my surprise, my cycle started!
i have been walking as much as possible every day since surgery and just got cleared yesterday (July 3, 2013) to exercise.
Today i am 25 lbs down and on my way to a new and improved life.
